David-Matthew Barnes is a master at opening lines and scenes that immediately pull you in. Riding with James Dean was no exception--I was immediately sucked in by the hint of danger, the compelling characters, and the candy-tinted world of Johnny's first summer in a no-name beach town laced with equal parts hopelessness and desire.
