Today more than 40 million people in the U.S. find themselves responsible for caring for a parent, relative, or friend. Building Better Caregivers, developed by the author team of the bestselling Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, shares the best in caregiving research and the most important lessons learned from thousands of caregivers. With a focus on reducing stress through the use of practical skills and tools, this book will help you manage your caregiving tasks so you can maintain a happy, fulfilling life while also meeting your caregiving obligations.
I guess with the fact that with our ever increasing "silver" population, this book is necessary more than ever in this day and age. A family member whom I love dearly is a part of that population and due to a run in with statins, they are now unable to take care of themselves. Enter me and the rest of the family. Enter stress, anxiety and frustration on all sides.
This book was a breath of fresh air at the right time for me. Even if you aren't going through a similar issue now, it will pop up sooner than you could imagine or wish. It has many excellent coping mechanisms that can be useful in any stressful situation and it has a TON of useful advice re: preparing for end of life, wills, power of attorneys and final wishes. Doesn't matter how old or young you are, these are things that need to be thought about and discussed with loved ones before it's too late.
Really insightful book. I liked how at the end of each chapter they had a bibliography for the information in that chapter. Made it easy to find.
I wasn't thrilled with the nutrition chapter, but unless I am reading a book about Paleo/Primal/keto, I'm not going to find my ideas of nutrition and health. I will respectfully agree to disagree on that chapter. The rest seems pretty golden to me though.
HIGHLY recommended to EVERYone. 5, do yourself a favor and read this, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bull Publishing for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
What a great update for CDSMP, companion manual for the Building Better Caregivers program. The links and further reading recommendations were particularly useful! I can't wait to share with others.
This is a really nice book. Along with giving plenty of suggestions for where to turn to get help, there are lots of resources listed at the end of every chapter. Perfect for you or someone you know who is (or will become) a caregiver. There are worksheets through each chapter, asking the reader to answer questions to help them discover why they're feeling overwhelmed or having a stressful time.
