This is my first time reading anything by Dürrenmatt, a Swiss playwright and writer. I would say this book is the anti-crime novel. Although steeped in the ambience of noir, it's a philosophical and existential, thus absurdist, exploration of justice and human morality. I found it both fascinating and confounding and couldn't quite put it down. It's narrated by a down on his luck alcoholic lawyer tasked with "proving" the innocence of a guilty man. As such, the narrative swerves and turns and pr ...more

A prominent leader in a Swiss community walks into a restaurant, commits murder in front of many eyewitnesses, is convicted and then hires a young attorney to prove that he is innocent of the crime. This novel begins with promise, shows possibilities in the middle and then runs out of steam in a vain attempt to salvage the magic of the opening.

Dürrenmatt's earlier dramas are more satisfying.

No, not for me, this one. Far too convoluted and pointless. Many positive reviews, so perhaps I was missing something – but I gave up trying to find it. A murder takes place in a restaurant and there are witnesses and the killer is recognised, arrested and put in prison. Where he is perfectly happy and asks a down-at-heel lawyer to take up his case nonetheless in some sort of philosophical or existential game to prove that someone else could have done it. But they couldn’t – because the man who ...more

It doesn’t paint me a picture, not once did I see an image in mind. In that case I will always dislike the book. There’s also a too frequent mentioning of names of characters you don’t get to know throughout the book. I wanna know a thought process of the main characters, didn’t happen, so couldn’t care less what would have happen to them. Bad book. Although I liked Der Verdacht.

A respected elderly government official strolls into a crowded restaurant during the dinner hour, shoots a prominent professor dead right into his tournedos, and strolls out again. After some initial confusion and a ridiculously bungled man-hunt the man is brought before the judges, convicted, and sentenced to a lengthy jail term which strangely he seems to enjoy immensely. Months later he hires our narrator, a struggling young attorney to prove that someone else committed the crime. The subsequ ...more

Above all others, this book is largely responsible for my having deep rooted reservations about justice in general and truth in particular. Can't recommend it enough.

Dürrenmatt is part of the German curriculum so most German speakers will have read The Judge And His Hangman or The Physicists. the Execution Of Justice is probably lesser known but it’s still classic fare - an obvious murder committed in full few of dozens of witnesses is being re-examined by a young lawyer on behalf of the perpetrator. All sorts of weird and wonderful characters parade through this story that deals with the differences of law versus justice, corruption within the system and th ...more

The complex explanation behind, what appears to be, a simple murder.

This is a difficult read at time - the narrator is always drunk and jumps around the timeline of the story, with abandon. But stick with it, the denouement is worth it.

Das beste Werk von Dürrenmatt

Adalet'i, Dürrenmatt'ın diğer kitaplarına kıyasla zayıf buldum.

'I have to write the truth, stick to the truth, and yet: What is the truth behind the truth?'

Completed almost 30 years after it was begun, Durrenmatt's novel is typical of his classic take on the crime novel, focusing on the absurdity of the legal process whilst developing a plot-twisting novel in itself. This is a whydunnit, that then becomes a who-may-have-done-it, before reverting to something else. Not one for those with an iron-clad faith in the justice system, this is an intrig

Interesting concept - a very public murder; a known killer; an unknown motive; an disorientating plot; the verdict - "justice can be restored only be a crime".

The plot is very disorientating - one never knows whether we are looking back, looking forward, or are in the moment. This may be as a result of the length of time it took to complete the novel; instead the story weaves and totters like its alcoholic narrator. The twist at the end ... clever.

With these contents, you don't need me to tell you the author despised formulaic thrillers that stuck to tried-and-tested rules. Which, with his scenario, is a shame. Still, if you're interested, a full review is to be had on:-

Nope, I did not like this.

Spät is completely annoying, drunk and wandering and basically all over the place. Kohler is equally annoying, in a different way, a smug question that feels the rules don't apply to him. The story diverges and runs this way and that, mostly not making any sense at all. This isn't a mystery in any true sense of the word, it is a collection of ramblings of a drunk who wants to justify his (future) actions.

The last part of the book, the editor's no

I tried, I tried but this one just left me...wandering in the dark. It's not a mystery, it's not a thriller, it's not a legal tale, it's more a philosophical exploration of what I'm not sure. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Worth a look if the blurb grabs you but it was a miss for me.
