I'll admit to being a die-hard Shannon McKenna fan up-front--and was thrilled to learn that another publisher is reprinting revised and updated versions of her backlist titles, because Return To Me is one of her early titles I missed when it was first published, and I was thrilled when she asked me if I wanted to read and review it (Thanks, Sharon!). Return To Me is an interesting combination of some of my favorite tropes, friends-to-lovers, bad boy makes good, second chance romance, and romantic suspense, and it works on all those levels. It was a 5-star read for me, as unputdownable as all of her other novels.
Ellen (El) Kent loved town bad boy, Simon Riley--they were best friends for years, and after losing their virginity to one another, while still in their teens, Simon abruptly left town after being accused of burning down someone's barn (he didn't), what he did do was break El's heart. He was a wild young man with quite a reputation for getting into trouble, and was placed finally with his Uncle Gus, an alcoholic veteran living in a run-down shack at the edge of a grander home and property owned by the well-to-do Kent family, the property having been lost to an earlier Riley family member when it was wagered in a card game.
Seventeen years later, Simon's military service photos led to a successful career as a photojournalist. When he receives a 5-month old letter from an attorney telling him that Gus has committed suicide, he returns to his small town of LaRue to handle Gus' estate. To say that no one seems thrilled to see him back in town, is putting it mildly, and he didn't expect to see that El had turned into a beautiful woman, or learn that she was engaged to marry Brad Mitchell, a self-important, rich young man, as snooty as his parents, and whom Ellen doubted she even loved, especially after seeing Simon again. She had bought the Kent home from her parents, and turned it into a successful bed and breakfast inn. When Simon sees what a disaster Gus left behind in his shack, he takes an available room at Ellen's B&B, and no one in town seems to approve of that arrangement, especially her fiance, his parents and Ellen's own, and that's only the beginning of the troubles she and Simon will soon face.
While Simon has always believed he lived under a dark cloud of trouble, Ellen has never doubted him, and although 17 years have passed, the chemistry between these two is smoking hot, and yes, Shannon McKenna has included some incredibly sexy scenes in this novel--she does them so well!
When mishap after mishap occurs not only to Simon, but extends to attacks on Ellen as well as her B&B inn, there's plenty of danger afoot, and more than one mystery to solve, especially when we learn that Gus didn't commit suicide. There's also plenty of emotional angst and drama as the attraction between Simon and Ellen heats up, and Simon's misgivings and feelings of unworthiness lead him to make some painful and hurtful decisions he will soon regret.
I found Return to Me to be a gripping, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, well-plotted,
steamy and exciting read, and I'm happy to recommend it.
