First thing first.. Beautiful cover and beautiful model.

My first indication should have been when I read the blurb but curiosity killed the cat.
The heroine feels second best to the hero first wife should have turned me off the book completely but I saw on one Facebook group that the hero was never in love with his dead wife and while that part was true .. (view spoiler)
1.5 stars (that's being generous and 1 star is purely for the satisfying punch in the face the pathetic heroine gives to the hero near the end of the book).

Where to begin...

First of all, it's disingenuous of the author not to mention anywhere that this is a retelling of a book (Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier). Many of the main and critical scenes are straight from Rebecca including the twist at the end of the book (although the twist on twist in Rebecca was far superior and showed who really was

My friend Leonor's review:

After reading the blurb for this baby and discovering this story was all about the dead wife trope (one of my FAVORITE tropes), I dove right in. What the blurb left out was that this story is basically a blatant ripoff and a smuttied up version of the classic story Rebecca.

Spineless little Darby is put through emotional hell through most of this story, from most of the characters. (view spoiler)
While I'm not fond of re-tellings, I'm even less fond of reading a re-telling without any indication of it being one. That being said, I actually liked this one.

When I read the blurb for His Wife, which I don't do often, I got excited because it had a Rebecca (by Daphne Du Maurier) feeling to it and I like that plotline a lot. But I didn't expect the book to mimic Rebecca so much.

Of course there were changes, it's not ALL the same, but most of it. There were a few changes here and there. I felt

This book is a little bit naughty, a little bit nice and a whole lot of fun!

I must admit I love strong female leads, so watching Darby’s journey from the meek college graduate we meet on the first page to the confident lady of the house she becomes by the last, drew me in.

The best part of the book for me was Ashley’s writing style. The flow of the story and her great way with words had me excited to see what twists were coming next.

I’m keeping an eye on this author, and look forward to grabbing

This is Ms. Hastings debut novel so I say wow, super wow! I was immersed in the story right away. It is engaging with Nathan becoming the man of any woman's dreams. There is suspense and love and some raunchy and exciting sex. When you get to the heart of the matter with this book, your heart will mealt, making you long for your own Nathan. The heroine in this story is lovable and the reader will find themselves rooting for her. Darby is determined and her love for her man shows through. I look ...more

I’ve never read Rebecca nor have I seen the movie and I’m kind of glad because after reading some reviews I probably wouldn’t have liked this book. Darby is 21 years old, she’s just graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Library Science. She’s arrived in NYC for a little vacation with her Mother who is a busy real estate agent. Darby and her Mom were supposed to have dinner together but her mom ends up inviting Michael to join them. Apparently he’s the son of her mom’s friend ...more
ARC given by author through Booksprout. My review is given volunterly.

His Wife was the first book published by Ashley Hastings.

I gave it 3 1/2 stars.
This book gave me mixed feelings, the biggening I really loved, and the end. The middle portions I felt a bit disconnected with the book.
These characters are going to give you all types of emotions. I really felt bad for Darby throughout the story until she finally stood her ground, and stood up for herself... I felt really proud of her!!! She was

I received a review copy of this book from the author through Voracious Readers and Booksprout. I have never read anything by this author before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. This was a great book! It was very well written and edited properly - which I appreciated. The story was intriguing and engaging. The characters were all well developed and the lead characters, Darby and Nathan were different from what I am used to - but it works. And although I normally ...more

His Wife is a contemporary romance with a gothic feel to it. The book blurb gives an accurate and intriguing description of the story. The writing is great, the characters are interesting. Nathan Randolph is mysterious and sexy and I fell under his spell as much as Darby did! Although Darby is kind of innocent and obliging at the beginning, she evolves into a more self-assured and assertive woman and I wanted to applaud her in a couple of instances. This book is a great read and I enjoyed it ...more

Fascinating Storyline

This isn’t your usual older man younger woman story and it immediately grabbed my attention. Darby has recently graduated from college and is meeting her mother in New York for some vacation time together. Instead, her mother tries to fix her up with a creep from Darbys hometown. When he bores her tears at dinner and then won’t take no for an answer, handsome, older, widowed Nathen steps in to rescue her. What ensues takes inexperienced Darby by a storm and she sets out with

Wow! Compelling, thought-provoking, sexy and passionate read! It is Emotionally deep and beautiful, Incredibly descriptive, with obvious incredible character progression. The story flows smoothly, is superbly written, full of drama, ups and downs, funny, witty, suspense, twists and hotness! A really great read! Definitely recommended.

I really enjoyed this story. At times the main female character definitely lived up to nickname of "Doormat Darby" but she definitely grew throughout the story. Sometimes I wanted to shake Nate, because he couldn't see the crap his mom was putting Darby through.

She meets and marries a man within two days of knowing him! Reckless yeah but to see Darby grow from a cowed down take everything woman to one with a backbone is priceless! She met the man she thought was going to be her everything only to be compared to his first wife not only by him but his mother and friends. Darby took a stand and she will have you in her corner cheering her on!

His Wife is a great romantic suspense! How can I best describe it? If Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Rebecca, and Jane Eyre had a baby, it would be His Wife (plus throw in a dash of steamy love scenes).
I love a good mystery and Ashley does not disappoint. I couldn’t put the book down. Ashley’s descriptions make the scenery come to life. If you like an alpha male, then you may find a new book boyfriend in Nathan. And Darby, while timid to start with, comes into her own and you’ll be rooting for

4.5 stars. First, I have to say that I love Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. It was the very first book I properly binge read, straight through in one sitting, as a teenager. And, having read a few reviews on Amazon prior to picking up the book, I knew this was a re-telling. If you don't know that going in, I can see why some of the plot points would throw you. There is a lot about this story that Ms. Hastings keeps true to the original (the rapid romance, the darkness, the mystery), yet she gives ...more

I devoured this book in an evening and stayed up way too late making sure I finished it.
I'm not a fan of main characters who are doormats but I AM a big fan of main characters who come into their own. One of my favorite parts about this book was the progression of Doormat Darby to the Lady of Peacock Alley.
This story had the perfect amount of mystery to keep me on my toes and every guess I made about it ended up being wrong (That's a good thing! I absolutely love when my assumptions are wrong!)

Loved it

This was a great book from beginning to end. I loved the characters and their chemistry. I could not put the book down. I hope Maxwell gets his own story. I only wish it was longer to read.

I hope to read more from this author.

Darby is a gentle young woman who has been bullied by her mother for too long. When they agree to meet in New York for a meal, little realising that her mother has set her up with a repulsive jerk from their small home town that she considers will make a good marriage match with Darby. Overhearing the deplorable way that the jerk speaks down to Darby, her knight in shining armour, Nathan who is 20 years older than her, comes to their table making out that he had a date with Darby. I loved the cover immediately. It is beautiful and elegant all at the same time. The story begins with a whirlwind romance between Darby and Nathan. The older man sweeps in and takes Darby with him. In some ways, you wonder how it can be real. Of course, a part of me wants it to be real because who wouldn’t want a man to come in like a knight on a white horse and be the Prince Charming we always wanted. I mean Nathan seems exactly like what Darby needs because her mother is less

Sweet, quiet, subdued Darby is swept off get feet by Nathan, a wealthy older widower.
After marriage and moving onto his estate she finds that her new home is filled with his late wife’s memories. It seems the vivacious and popular Savannah was the favorite of her husband, friends, and family. Her new mother in law treats her scornfully and undermines and sabotages their relationship from day one.
As Darby tries to navigate in this hostile environment, she begins to get mixed feelings from her

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Ms. Hastings had me at the introductory with the sentence "Because you see, the boat's only cargo was a terrible secret, and once this boat was found and its secrets revealed for all to see, the storm would rage at last." I couldn't wait to get started and once I did I hated putting the book down. This is the story of a tortured older man who falls for a much younger lady who has been treated as doormat most ...more

Darby recently graduated college and her mother is already trying to pair her off- her mother has never really paid much attention to Darby and certainly has little respect for her daughter too. Thankfully Nathan comes to the rescue when her date is horrible.

Nathan couldnt let this beautiful women deal with a date gone bad. He noticed Darby immediately. So after the rescue he showed her the sights of New York.

I’ve read other books by Ashley Hastings, but hadn’t read this one yet and I don’t know why I waited so long! When the story started I was not a fan of Darby, she truly was a doormat and would let anyone and everyone walk all over her, but as the story progressed I was so happy to see her grow and mature and really start to stand up for herself. I felt the like I was on a roller coaster with how I felt about Nathan. I’d go from loving him, to hating him, to loving him again.
