I read this book as part of a group read and author chat for The Booket List on Facebook.

This was a very strange book. I wanted to like it, but it was just very okay. The writing was super choppy, but I did get used to it after a while. One thing I wasn't a fan of was the fight scenes. They were so strange and using my limited knowledge of kickboxing and a couple other martial art forms, I couldn't see Taya winning any of the fights she did with the moves she used.

The other thing that was strange was how event were connected. Years would pass in between chapters but then random events would be highlighted. The other thing I wasn't a fan of was the random f/f relationship between Moon and Taya. Like it was such a surprise, I didn't think they even liked each other more than friends. Then later in the book, Taya gets married! TO A MAN!! Like that's fine, but there was a specific line in the story that said something along the lines that Taya only ever liked Moon which makes me think she's demisexual, but I guess she's actually bisexual?? I don't know what to think it was very weird. Plus her husband's name was Trout, like I definitely snickered over that.

There were also a couple little things that just seemed weird or unnecessary. But overall, an okay story and an okay prequel. Not sure if I needed any of this information for Land of the Free, but we shall see.

The plot was a good idea. But the writing needs some work. The dialogue was cringey and the translations from scene to scene were a bit quick and choppy. The time lapses happened without you realizing it much and the backstories need details more details and you can’t suddenly bring characters in without introducing them more and how they fit into the fold. But it was interesting and neat ideas and how it went. I’m interested to see how the next one unfolds.

So disappointed!

On reading the blurb I was excited to think that I would be starting a series about strong women fighting against injustice. What a disappointment! It was so stilted with no real personal insights to the characters. Even the main character had no depth. On top of all that I don’t think that it was edited or proofed. There were ridiculous errors such as ‘ingenuous’ instead of ‘ingenious’. It was so boring that I stopped and watched the news, then I made some dinner and then I stopped to update my budget; which, by the way, was more interesting!
I read the chapter that’s supposed to get you to buy the book. I had hopes that this one might be more interesting. No such luck! One moment the main character is escaping from her captors and the next she’s home! How she got out of the headquarters of the Correlation (and what a stupid name that is!) is never explained and this happens throughout the novella and again in the sample chapters. Just don’t waste your time

This is a story of the origins of Mythical Slayers and the life of Taya, the founder of the freedom fighters movement. The story follows Taya since she was a girl until the end of her life. It describes all the hardship, love, friendship, betrayal and loss throughout her incredibly long life.
Taya is an exceptional character who never gave up believing in better tomorrow. She is strong, skilled and compassionate. During her life, she inspired an incredible number of people, helped whom ever she could, and passed her knowledge to all who were willing to learn. The final chapter contains a beautiful message she left for the future generations of strong, independent women who would continue her fight for freedom against centuries of oppression.
The series consists of three origin stories which should be read in order for better understanding of the world and circumstances: Rising, Sisters of the Dawns Early Light, and Hellcat, followed by the first book in the series Land of the Free.

Wonderful

The beginning! The start of the Sisterhood! In a future war torn America that is mostly controlled by a group of greedy men, one young woman believes she can make a difference! Meet Taya, who grew to womanhood in an apocalyptic society. She offers hope and a dream of freedom to any who will listen. Through her lifetime she gathers information and learns everything she can to teach people that the do not have to bow down to a greedy few. Taya also becomes a master of the martial arts and teaches that also. Her one goal in life is to see people free in a free America again. So the Mystical Slayers are born. An elite group of women freedom fighters! This is a wonderful prequel novella set a few hundred years before the future Mystical Slayers series. Fast paced and exciting.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book and the fact that the main character was a very strong young female. However, the storyline itself felt very choppy as if parts of the story were left out. I think this has great potential to be a really epic idea, but that the technique could be executed a little better. Some of the scenes between assailants and Taya had some very in your face language that I felt was a little too much and not necessary. There are better words to use to help make a scene work and don’t always need to use a string of profanities to get the point across. To each their own.

I love how in this book Rising by Michael W Huard we are learning more about how our favorite kick ass female warriors got their start. We learn of how a girl named Mataya dreamt of having America free once again and thus begins the Mystical Slayer Sisterhood. It tells how the robot wars have decimated America. Survivors forms groups calling themselves families. This book is a part of a prequel series to Land of the Free. I can wait to read more the women fighting to make America great and free for all.

The changing wars have all but destroyed America. Survivors would group together to form families. A girl named Mataya took survival very seriously. She wanted America amazing again. This is the tale of how Mystical Slayer sisterhood began. We can all learn by Matayas mindset. I have to be better than what I see, better than those I come across. If the world is going to get better, it's going to have to start with me! She lived a life of love, empowerment and sadness. Great read!

A tale of rising hope in a dark dystopian future! The book is an interesting style very different from the norm! The story is a bit broken up due to the span of time it covers. Thus it reads more like a series of events rather than a typical novella. This is the tale of Taya the founder of the Mystical Slayers! She has become a legend and the mother of all the Slayers.

Loved seeing where it all began. Brings the story full circle of understanding. I find it refreshing that for once Science fiction/fantasy doesn't mean disproving faith in God. Hope & Faith have always brought me streangth. May they always bring it to others in need.

Great prequel. I really loved Taya, the mother of the Sisterhood. It was like she was pre-destined to do what she did. Her background sheds light on the tenets the Mystical Slayers still follow in the series.

This is where it all began; and what a beginning it is. A highly recommended prequel to the Land of the Free novel.
