Medical mystery hard to put down. 1705 Scotland. Plot told in two alternating voices--a young doctor, Malcolm, and a village healer, Elspeth. Malcolm and fellow doctors are trying a blind experiment to see if inoculating subjects with smallpox scabs would bring on the disease, as part of search for a cure. Try to keep up! A story worth the time.
First, know that at the end of the kindle edition there is a list of characters with their connection to one another and to the story! This would have been helpful in the front of the book but, oh well. The many “Macs” began to run together for me.
An interesting read with concern to historical and political accuracy set in the early 18th century. Adding Tsar Peter was an interesting touch. The story was told from both a male and female perspective which ...more
