I have a lot of respect for Kallendorf's scholarship, especially on books and reading practice in the early modern period. Virgil is a bit of a speciality of his and this is an engaging assessment of how some Renaissance readers responded to the Aeneid. Rather than following the more usual trajectory which sees Aeneas as the perfect moral hero, Kallendorf uncovers the way in which at least some readers were as unsettled and disturbed as more modern interpreters are by the "further voices" which ...more
