Second Time Sweeter by Beverly Jenkins is a 2018 William Morrow publication.

I added this book on a whim because I was so surprised to see a contemporary novel written by Beverly Jenkins, an author, who for me, has always been associated with historical romance novels.

Apparently, this book is a part of an ongoing series I knew absolutely nothing about. I didn’t intend to start reading another series- I know, you’ve heard that a million times- much less start in on the ninth book. I don’t have

3-1/2 stars, which is not lukewarm -- I really enjoyed this

I can't really write a summary for this, because it's a continuation of a long series of books following the same characters in the same town. I read the book immediately previous to this and liked it a lot, but despite my best intentions, I haven't gotten around to reading the whole series yet. But when I saw this latest one on my library's New shelf, I grabbed it -- might as well keep going. The magic of these books is that they are bo

3.5-star read

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Welcome back to Henry Adams, Kansas. A rural town founded by former slaves in the late 1800s known as Exodusters. This town has the dubious distinction of being sold on eBay and purchased by millionaire Bernadine Brown. Ms. Brown moved in and provided much-needed upgrades for the town (such as paving the road, improving infrastructures, providing town-wide WiFi services, building homes

Riveting

Going to Henry Adams, Kansas is like visiting your family every summer, it's the one place you can't wait to get to and that one place you don't want to leave. There were quite a few ups and downs on this visit. Maybe a budding New relationship between my Amari and Tiffany, and as the title states Second Time Sweeter, with Gary and Nori. We even had an attempted murder and kidnapping, wow. This book was so amazing, and last but not least my Mal is still trying to win back his lady love

Love this series !

I always wait patiently for a Henry Adams book. The stories that involve the characters and their development. Like Mal, even when it appears you finally have things the way they are suppose to be, you can still mess them up. Wonderful job Ms. Jenkins!!! I so look forward to the next installment....hope it comes soon!

"Second Time Sweeter" is Book 9 in author Beverly Jenkins long-running "Blessings Series". Ms. Jenkins has created the close-knit fictional community of Henry Adams, Kansas and populated it with unique characters and lively storylines. This book has many twists and turns, and hopes for a number of happy second chances. Bernadine Brown, the millionaire who brought prosperity and leadership to the town, has had her heart trampled upon by Mal July. When it seems as though he may be on the right pat ...more

Wish there was one in this world. LOVED Every word and every chapter. A few of them brought tears to my eyes and some had me laughing. Can't wait to see what happens with Mari and Tiff.

Be still my heart. This story was so good. I just love Henry Adams. The love this town has for each other including the children is amazing. Excellent, exciting, heart felt and breathtaking. This is a great book club series.

Beverly Jenkins's Blessings series is fantastic & I one I really like to rec for those looking for WCF with a strong sense of place/community. Second Time Sweeter is for sure at the top of these recs now: second chances, familiar older heroes/heroines, overcoming mistakes, plus true mentoring. Even if you haven't read previous titles in the series, Jenkins has put enough backstory in Second Time Sweeter to make this one a great place to start.

GoodRead....The very consistent Jenkins never disappoints and although I really like this series, there are a few characters that I do not like and again the consistency I did not like them from the start and that has not changed I still do not like them now except Tiffany, growth has made Mi like her.

The new bakery/coffee shop owners Sam and Brenda Miller are in the Witness Protection Program and bring Russian hitmen to town. Everyone’s upset the FBI didn’t give the town a heads up. Recommends it for: Jan Karon fans.
The series is a perfect antidote from stress and helps center readers who have overloaded on over-long or involved books. The problems encountered by the citizens of Henry Adams, Kansas, are often similar to real life, but the whole series has a lot of "wish fulfillment" involved. When a rich divorcee decides to buy Henry Adams on eBay, her deep pockets make everything easier than it actually is in small town in western Kansas.

But that's part of the fun; wouldn't it be nice (isn't that why read

I'd honestly give this book 3.5 stars but that's not an option. It was an easy read, I was able to finish it over the weekend, and I enjoyed it a lot. This is the 9th installment of the series and continued to tell stories of the inhabitants of Henry Adams. We got to delve deeper into the story line of Gary, his daughters, his ex-wife and his high school sweetheart. We also got to see how Malachi finally came to his senses. I enjoy reading the Blessings series for many reasons, one of which is t ...more

"Second Time Sweeter" is the 9th book in the "Blessings Series". It can easily be read as a stand-alone book but being a first-time reader, I did have a little trouble keeping the characters straight. It is a blending of many people and stories. Henry Adams, Kansas, is a small close-knit community that was purchased on eBay by a millionaire, Bernadine Brown. She moved in and provided much-needed updates by improving infrastructures, providing many services, building new homes, providing a school ...more

Heart warming

As usual Mrs. Jenkins always brings it in her story telling. I fell in love with a place called Henry Adams during her first novel concerning its town. Not only does she give you history surrounding it but the new and improved version of the small town in Kansas. Henry Adams and it's people are the kind of folk I would love to be around. The quietness and the loyalty of everyone. Second Time Sweeter gave the readers another glimpse of the true nature of the town's ability to come to

As is the case in most of Ms. Jenkins’ novels, there are several story-lines woven together to make an engrossing book. The main characters have a great deal to overcome to get back together and this is the theme of the book, second chances. The primary subplot has storekeeper Gary Clark hopefully reuniting with his high school sweetheart. Many of the characters from previous novels make appearances, making this trip to Henry Adams even more enjoyable. As with all of her novels, this one has an ...more

Sometimes I wonder why I keep reading this series, since it borders on unbelievable. I guess I'm hooked on stories of people who got burned in their first marriage and then find true love.

As usual, Jenkins gives us good characters, humor, and drama. I still wish that she'd give more physical description of the characters, as very few people are described outright and it's hard for me to create mental images of everyone.

Without posting anything too spoiler-y: looks like at least one couple will g

This was the perfect book to read over the holidays, sweet, simple, and oh so enjoyable. Although it's part of a series set in the fictional Henry Adams, KS, I believe it worked as a stand alone. Mal July has lost his standing in the little community in extraordinary fashion. After "borrowing" money from the town diner in a misguided attempt to invest and make himself rich to impress his lady friend, he's not only lost his job, his girlfriend, and the respect he once had. A lot of the story revo ...more

Mal made a giant mess in the last book by stealing money. In Second Time Sweeter he needs to come to terms with what he did and the impact on the community. Gary Clark is excited for his high school reunion and the opportunity to see his old flame again, but his ex wife arrives and announces they're getting remarried, something he and the girls want no part of. Then comes a shooting, and everything will change.

Beverly Jenkins does her usual impeccable job of taking us to Henry Adams, and I'm sad

There's an awful lot going on in the small town of Henry Adams, Kansas! I had not read the earlier books, which I think might have hampered me a bit because I wasn't as familiar with the characters, who are all linked and WOW- so dynamic. I'm not sure I could be as generous as Bernadine is to Mal, who was a real rat and now is asking for a second chance from both her and the town. I had a lot of sympathy for Lily July and Gary Clark. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. This is a well written novel ...more

Absolutely Love Beverly Jenkins!! She is such an amazing author! I love the way she ties African American History into her books! I have learned so much from her about our history in a way that makes it easy to remember and fun all at the same time! Also, being someone who has worked in social services for 11 years and still at it, I can appreciate the way Beverly Jenkins balances out bringing awareness to many of the issues that youth in care suffer -while also providing those who love to read, ...more

Toward the end of the last book, we learned that Malachi "Mal" July had embedded $70k from the town. In this book, he is returning with his tail between his legs. Or, at least sort of. But he also wants people to just forget about it already and that's just not going to happen. This is the town that has the children paint the old school teacher's fence when they need to be punished so a half-assed apology at a town hall isn't going to cut it.
There is also a short plot about a hit woman coming to

Exceptional

It was so lovely visiting with the good people of Henry Adams. Ms. Bev crafted a beautiful story about forgiveness, second chances and a few other things we can all learn from. Of course she added a little history in there to enlighten all of us. I can't wait for the next chapter in the growing town of Henry Adams it's like watching your friends and family grow up. Until next time.

This book is my favorite one so far. I loved how the mix of suspense, mayhem, and second chances came together to make an excellent story. Beverly Jenkins is a MASTER STORYTELLER and STS shows her writing prowess. It is always great to return to Henry Adams and discover what the host of eclectic characters are up to. Second Time Sweeter is an enjoyable and captivating read. I highly recommend it! .

As usual, reading the latest installment of the Blessings series made me feel like I was revisiting my favorite PG-rated TV show. It is so nice to catch up with all the characters and see how all the children are maturing. The only other series I've read that has given me a similar feeling was one written by Lauraine Snelling which (coincidentally) is centered around a city called Blessing.

Anyway, I can't wait until the next installment of this series is released.

These periodic visits to Henry Adams remind me of road trips South to visit grandma, aunts and cousins in the summer when I was growing up. It was always fun playing, catching up and seeing how everyone had changed. Each installment has been fresh and filled with characters/story lines that make sure there's never a dull moment. Finishing is like packing up the car to go home and, just like those childhood summers, I'm looking forward to coming back. See you later Henry Adams.

Henry Adams remains a close knit community where respect is important, second chances and forgiveness is granted and opinions from all matter.
Even a child knows right from wrong. Mal did wrong. It was necessary for him to give a full and sincere apology to each person he effected. He did
Likewise Colleen's behavior was wrong. Unfortunately for her there is no redemption.
For a small town, a lot of action occurs in Henry Adams.
