This was a bit of a genre switch for myself and while I do read the occasional Crime mystery this one was in a class all of its own.
It had a Mystery Crime Sleuth vibe to it; also accompanied by a huge splash of the Paranormal.
So it has been a while since I indulged in this particular cross-genre and In my opinion, this was an excellent book to get back on the horse with.
It Drew me in straight from the very beginning; teasing my senses with its intriguing agenda and surprising even myself with how fast I could devour a book.
"Beyond The Pain" tells the tale of Colton Monroe a gifted but troubled psychic; almost a pariah in his small town because of his strange abilities and unwanted gifts.
When a local girl "Lana Turner" goes missing Colton's astounding abilities are called into play.
Working with a detective on the Chaumont police department payroll Colton employs all his varied talents to help bring Lana back home to her family.
Calling on depths of strength he was unaware he had; Colton is not only saving himself but also beginning a journey of discovery; (his destiny even) and once on this particular path; he will be committed to the destination; wherever it may lead him.
So this was so good; I especially adored the banter between our two main characters.
The back and fourthness of there repertoire was so amusing and brought a smile to my face often.
There was also such hidden depths to many of the characters portrayed here; Carlton especially was very proficient at hiding his inner turmoil and feelings; portraying an almost confidence and togetherness he was so far from actually feeling.
Using this mask as a shield to protect himself from the outside world Carlton has perfected the art of hiding in plain sight.
There is still so much left to discover here; question and answers to be asked and fulfilled and I am so invested in the next leg of this addictive new series.
This was the first book in this series and I'm so interested in seeing where this is eventually going to proceed.
With all the reveals and revelations we were treated to here in "Beyond The Pain" its certainly going to be an interesting and informative ride.
This is one story that gets my wholehearted seal of approval; It was such a great read that kept me guessing throughout.
Oh and I should just mention this is not a romance it's more of a supernatural crime Mystery.
Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC copy of "Beyond The Pain (The Beyond Series Book 1)" of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

"Now you watch as I chase the darkness”

The protagonist

Colton Cole Monroe is different after experiencing more than he bargained for when it came to his mother’s death and being abandoned by his father he has only ever had his Aunt Margie. Since that fateful day he has been running away from his gifts

In Chaumont, New York the Monroe Family is the stuff of legends. But Cole is also treated like a leper as soon as the townsfolk get want they want they treat him like a freak show. He owns the occult shop Transcendence. It doesn’t help that he can talk to ghost and that is Aunt Margie still hangs around and that he can call the dead back for one more last chat.

He can walk between worlds, the spirit world and the normal world. He has immense power. He has just been avoiding it for a very long time. But now he has a cause where it is either embrace is gifts or death.

He needs to let go of his past and harness his power and look beyond the pain so that he can achieve what he set out to do. A journal that belonged to the first witch in his family Esmeralda Monroe. Normally the gifts would pass down from daughter to daughter, but Cole has them now.
I adore Cole with all his quirks, his anger at the world, his kindness and with his gift truly wanting to help people. But he also felt his loneliness and that he was going down a path of destruction.

The Plot, Pace & Writing

Detective Angelo Donati is investigating a missing person case, but he needs help. The chief sends him to Transcendence to watch Cole but thinks that Cole is up to something else. Until he sees something he can’t explain. As Detective Dinkleberry finds it hard to believe in the paranormal he has a fine line to walk to not alienate Cole.

Angelo’s & Cole’s relationship was strained and tenuous at best but in time they found something in common. I appreciated their banter. And no it is not MM. The case of the missing Lana Turner is changing. It isn’t random. It’s a race against time. There is more than meets the eye. Will they find Lana or not? They have suspects but none of them fit. Now I said it was near perfect because of the open ending as in a cliffhanger and no clue when the next one is out.

I’ve found the romance genre slightly off putting lately and thought it was time to switch things up. I’m so fed up of the same cookie cutter books of duets, trilogies, man whore Heroes and virgin heroines it makes my head hurt.

Ms. Renteria is NTMA and I have been knocked off me socks as this book was brilliant. Admittedly the cover freaked me out to begin with but once I read the book it all made sense. Beyond the Pain is well written and the execution of the book is near perfect. It is intriguing and there was everything that I love for a book to be a success. But I love paranormal/supernatural anyway.

P.S. I loved  see past tense there now Ms. Renteria Killing Strangers by Marilyn Manson but after that you’ve ruined it for me.

I was sucked into the magic that is, Colton Monroe.

The words inside this book are as amazing as the cover!

Ok, firstly, the cover for Beyond The Pain is gorgeous. The first time I came across this book, I gushed over the cover alone! I didn't even read the blurb, I knew I needed this on my kindle for the cover alone.

I went into this book completely blind. I had absolutely no idea what I opened myself up too. I am not the paranormal reading woman, however, this book isn't like what insane other paranormal books are about. Without giving too much away, you will not find goblins or ghosts, no living dead gang bearing immortals. And no hairy beasts. Just a regular man with gifted abilities.

I'd give Colton Monroe a hundred stars if I could.

So one of the coolest parts of this book was that it was based in Chaumont, New York. I mean, who the heck knows Chaumont and Watertown, NY? Haha I visit Chaumont every summer because my grandparents live there, right on Lake Ontario, and I used to live there and in surrounding areas as well. I just thought it was cool. Although, I had a hard time picturing it in the book, lol.

Anyways, getting back to the book. I really loved Colton. He was full of so many emotions, one of which was anger. Lots of anger, and lots of sarcasm. Of course, I don't blame him, he leads a lonely life. When he's needed for a case, we meet Detective Angelo and the duo are just funny as h-e- double hockey sticks. They don't exactly hit it off, Detective Dinkleberry is somewhat of a skeptic, and Colt is wary and untrusting of most people. Needless to say, their back and forth banter was amusing and in their verbal sparring, they find somewhat of a comradery.

This book was so interesting in a way that, I've read books about ghosts and the supernatural, but it's so intriguing and done in a way that is not like most books I've read. I still have so many questions swirling around in my head and I want to know more! I love the way certain things pulled together and that Colt finds out that, maybe he's not as alone as he thought. I need to know more about Ezie and Aunt Margie, and I'm a little curious about Lana and her friends as well. Really intriguing start to this series and can't wait to read the next book and get more answers!

Colton is such an amazing protagonist. He is complex and full of different layers. He is a recluse who the police need and that makes him open up. I really enjoyed this different take on a paranormal adventure. I can't wait to read more by Ms. Renteria.

description
Beyond the Pain was a very interesting and intriguing story. I was pulled in by the paranormal aspect. Time bending, clairvoyance, and so much more, I knew this was my kind of story.

Renteria takes us on an exciting, twisted, and dark journey. Colton was a fascinating character with all of his abilities. She wove his gifts together with the mystery in a way that kept me turning the pages. Detective Angelo Donati is the law enforcement side of the book’s duo. Together he and Colton must find an abducted college student. These two were like oil and water. While I enjoy witty banter, I found their back and forth to be a bit too much. I enjoyed both characters individually and there were aspects of their partnership that I liked too, but overall the jabs got old after awhile. I did really enjoy their tender moments, it added a new aspect to the story that was needed.

Renteria not only increases the suspense and danger of the mystery but also introduces a new mystery with Colton and his abilities. I’m a huge paranormal fan so I was excited to watch things amp up in that area. We are left with some things up in the air. I am definitely interested in reading more about Colton and what’s to come for him.
