I really enjoyed learning new words (to me) from the past. This book put a new light on some things I didn't know from our American history. The original artwork alone by the author adds so much more to the book. You can tell it is truly a labor of love to bring the characters to life for her.

This book tells the story of a young couple from the mountains and plantations of pre-Civil War era Tennessee. It describes the secret attraction, courtship, and romance of two people from different social classes while they are making preparations for their planned journey to the state of Missouri. The author brings to light many fascinating aspects of trail life they expect to encounter, concentrating greatly on fireplace cookery. I loved reading about how these pioneers lived back in 1841 and how their love for each other overcame anything else. A great book for anybody to read.
