In Cry of the Flying Rhino, Ivy Ngeow captivates the reader entirely. I was enthralled from the first page and curious about the setting of the Borneo. The novel is rich with details on cultural backgrounds and references, so much so, that you find yourself learning whilst reading. The novel is told through three different and very diverse characters. It was extremely intriguing to see how all these narratives joined together. I was given an ARC of Cry of the Flying Rhino by the author. I was very interested in reading this book, as it combined Scottish characters (which is where I was living until a few weeks ago) with Malaysian characters (which is one of the countries that I’m from).

Ivy Ngeow’s debut novel is like nothing I’ve read before. Cry of the Flying Rhino tells a story of defeat, struggle and an eventual coming to terms with reality. Told from multiple points of view and set in Malaysia and Borneo, the main protagonist is a young naïve doctor, Benjie Lee.
