The Secrets of Life is a great read if you love second chances and a strong heroine.

One of my favorite things about a book is when the heroine is strong and takes charge. So many times, we get get whiny women that can’t handle life. Not Jess!!! She is strong and takes care of her family. She is a single mom to a sweet little girl and is also raising her two younger brothers. It’s not easy and they struggle but she makes it happen. Some people look down on her and think that she is trash because

This story kept me reading despite it being quite a bit too long for an angst by misjudgement story. Everything would have been resolved if the two main characters had just talked at least one of the times they came face to face, over and over again. Hunter was a gigantic douche (view spoiler)

So I decided long ago not to rate books that I don't finish but I do make an exception for books where I try to get to the end as an example The Secrets of Life. It started ok, the writing wasn't that great but I do love a second chance romance so I wanted to see them get back together. Well it was a waste of time and I finally gave up. The whole thing is a mess, Jess is so annoying. I understand her life hasn't been easy but I quickly started to dislike her with her know it all attitude

The secret of Life is a raw gritty read about a beautiful girl who supports her family when the world is against her. This is a Kindle Unlimited read.

Jessica has fallen on hard times. She didn’t finish school. Her mother is a drunken money sucker and her brother is in prison. Jessica single handily supports her younger brothers and her little girl. She also pays her mother’s debts. The only way to do this is to get a job that pays well which doesn’t require qualifications. Jessica supports her f

Interesting story but the hero was only in about 40% of the book!

4.5 Stars. First off, I have to say that I absolutely love this cover! It drew me to the book and I love that I read this book! Jess is a working girl, a pole dancer at a nice club, and she does this so that she can take care of her brothers and her daughter. She's a great heroine- strong, determined, and a great friend. She has had a tough life, but does not let that get her down. She is a great mother to her daughter and also to her 2 brothers whom she has been taking care of for quite some ti ...more

The Secrets of Life - K L Humphries

When the characters in a book have you so caught up that you can’t help but feel every emotional second of their story, then a book and it’s Author have done their work.

The Secrets of Life is one of those books! With its roots firmly planted in the lower class of England, the characters eek out an existence without losing their humanity or their dignity.

Jess is the pivotal character, having been left to raise her two younger brothers and an illegitimate daught

The secrets of life was a good read it would be the first one I've read by K.L Humphreys and it wont be my last . I thought this was interesting because Jess and Hunter don't really get together until about 80% into the story it's very rare to read a book with the couple not with each other . When Jess and Hunter get together they made a great couple I just wish we got more of them it felt a bit rushed when everything was resolved . Jess was an excellent heroine she's strong takes care of her fa ...more

Jess didn’t get to finish school, she’s supporting her younger brothers and her daughter, with her brother in jail and her mother is a drunk and sucks the money. The only way she knows how to survive is to get a job, she has no qualification and the only job that pays well is a pole dancer.
She does what she has to survive, to give her daughter a better life, and to keep her brothers out of the system. Even though her job is looked down on by some, she has some great friends that look out for her

I loved that Jess owned who she is and was a pillar of strength for her family! I also enjoyed the people in her support network and loved how friends became family and they looked out for one another!

I really wish I could’ve gotten more backstory on Hunter and Jess! Though we get some I just feel I needed more of a foundation for their relationship! I do love how they figure it out and come together but there are just a few loose ends I would’ve loved to see tied up!

There is so much I could say about this book. The author made the heroine so strong. She is a single mother who is also taking responsibility for her siblings and does it with class.... well as much class as a stripper can. That being said, I think that aspect took front stage to the romance. The romance is their, and it is amazing but I loved the journey that Jess took. From start to finish, she took matters into her hands and prevailed. I loved her and her story so much. I can’t wait for the n ...more

The Secrets of Life is the first book in 'The Working Girls' series. This is a second chance romance between school sweethearts but it’s so much more. This is Jess and Hunter's story.

Jess is a strong female lead character. She takes her responsibilities to heart and her loyalties never waver. She is a determined person can and does anything and everything to take care of those she loves. It is yet another example of how a lack of communication and letting others come between you and letting what they say can change your whole life.

I love reading about strong female characters, and Jessica Hughes is by far one of the strongest ladies I've read in awhile.

At 21 years old, she's raising her 2 younger brothers and her 4 year old daughter on her own. After getting pregnant at 16 with the promise of an amazing future by her boyfriend, only to have him walk away and turn his back on her. Her mom's an alcoholic with a gambling problem that she leaves her daughter to payoff while she abandons her family.

So Jess turns to pole danci

What a brilliant story line. The well written story will bring you smiles, tears, anger and a bit of angst. It will also bring you into a story that will captivate you and show you what a woman's strength really is. Jess is that woman, and her strength is beyond measure. No it's not a physical strength, it's a strength of conviction, of emotion, of independence, of responsibility and of love. Jess and her siblings have been blessed with a drunk for a mother who, after Jess delivers her daughter ...more

Three of my favorite things in one book! Second Chances, single parents, and big loving families. There’s not one thing about this book I didn’t love. As a matter of fact, I loved how unique it was. While still sweet, this was not a sugary instantly perfect book. This was real. Full of emotion, real people living real lives, struggling surviving overcoming, and doing it all with love. I couldn’t get enough!

Jess is now one of my all time favorite women. Her strength was incredible. Her drive to b

The Secrets of Life by K. L. Humphreys was my very for book by the author and I really enjoyed the writing, characters and overall story. Definitely looking forward to reading more books in the future. Especially since this is book one in a series!

Gah! Where to start? Let's start with the wonderful Jess. Strong, relentless, driven, and with a heart the size of Texas! She's a force to be reckoned with and such an amazing character. I admired her from the very first page and grew to love her more

This story starts with Jess, a working girl, a pole dancer. Struggling to make ends meet, and provide not only for her little 5 yr old daughter but also her two brothers. I really loved Jess, her family meant everything to her, and despite her despicable mother, she was determined to keep them all together. Having had her daughter at 16 after breaking up with Hunter, the love of her life, she sure had to grow up fast. I loved that she holds her head high, I loved that her strength shone, yet her ...more

Well, what can I say other than Brilliant.

Poor Jess had no choice other than to survive and keep a roof over her and her families heads. Even if that meant she had to do the most unthinkable and degrading job for money.

This was such a great book and I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Jessica was such a great character who did what she could do in order to support her brothers and her daughter. By no means did she love what she was doing but it was the only way she could get enough money to pay all of the bills she had.

I was so mad at Hunter for the things he said to Jessica through a good part of the book. I was so frustrated at how he treated her because of his own actions that put her in this situation. When

Was a little to slow moving for me, Hunter was an idiot and a mama's boy Jessica was a strong lead, if Hunter came into the picture earlier on and they started talking it wouldn't have been so slow moving. There was so much slut shaming going on in this book that's why the 3 stars, even her little brother was calling her a whore so was the ex and her other brother Owen called her a slut and accused her of selling her body just because she had to become a dancer to make a lot of money to support ...more

This was an amazingly written story of young love and second chances. Out of desperation and having mouths to feed all alone, she becomes a stripper, because sometimes there’s not too many choices when you have children to take care of. Ms. Humphreys does a beautiful job of drawing you in and putting you into Jess’ shoes. I

I liked this story and I read it in one sitting. My only problem with this story was that it felt like it started in the middle of a story. I liked Jessica. She is a strong and independent woman. Everything she did was for her family. Her love for her brothers and her daughter was clear to see.
I wasn’t a fan of Hunter. I thought he was an asshole. He seemed to judge everything Jessica did the majority of the time. When he learnt what his mother did he blamed Jessica. He accused her o

I am always looking for new Authors to follow and K.L. Humphreys is going to be one of those. This is the first book that I have read by her and it certainly won't be the last. This is a story about Jess and Hunter. They were High School sweethearts and thought they would be together forever. Jess is dealt a bad blow and has to take the reigns of not only caring for herself at 16 but also her brothers when their mom leaves. She does what ever she has to and doesn't care what anyone thinks of her ...more

I was introduced to this author and her books by a author friend of mine.
I often read the blurb of a book before I start reading it but this time I didn't.

I was hooked within the first few pages, in fact I stupidly thought "I'll read a couple of chapters before bed" this actually turned into me finishing the book and realising it was 4am!

Jess is a 21 pole dancer who's looking after not only her 4 year old daughter but also her 2 younger brothers. Was this her career of choice, or was it just a c

Book one of the working girls series, and it sets the scene for this series. Hunter and Jess have had a whirlwind time of it. It isn't a story that is easy to connect with at first, because we don't really know the back story of Hunter and Jess, we're plopped in five years later, after jess had a baby, and after Hunter walks away. So, as you can guess it isn't a straight forward second chance romance. It has many tears and tantrums. The story itself is captivating. The twists and tur

Second chance romance that will make you hold your breath in places and want to punch people in their faces in others.

Jess and Hunter had it all until someone did everything in their power to break them a part. It worked and Jess was devastated but had to stay strong to keep her family together. She had to raise her younger brothers and did whatever it took to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. She didn't care that people looked down on her for doing what she did.
