Exciting, Authentic Viking Love Story

Set in the 10th century in Normandy, this is the story of Rurik, a leader of the “Forgotten Sons” band of Vikings. Successful in raiding, he now wants land and a home. When William Longsword offers him land in Normandy and a Viking wife, Rurik leads his men there to take advantage of the offer. The Parisian maid he rescues intrigues him but he won’t be dissuaded from his path.

Safira, a Hebrew, is not the thrall she appeared to be. Taken from her home in Paris

I just could not really get into this book. I know it was a “romantic” Viking story, but I just couldn’t love it. The Forgotten Sons were like a MC club with horses and swords. There was lots of drama, fighting, politics, and feuding. It just didn’t light my fire. I was really perturbed by the end how it just wrapped up with no real explanation. If the jarl was so dead set on this certain condition, how did he just change his mind. The reason given was very lame.

Oh well ok read. Received a copy

I really enjoyed this Viking Romance. I wish I had read it straight though and not taken a break halfway through the book, but I finally did finish it and enjoy it! It's been a while since I read a Viking romance, and now I want to tuck right in to book #2!

Reading this book was shear torture for the first 20%. I only read it because it was sent to me to review by the New England Readers' Choice Awards. I probably would have stopped reading it if it weren't for the fact I needed to give a review. Good thing I kept reading because it did get a lot better.

The plot and historical aspect of this book were superb but the constant over-explaining and introspection annoyed and bored me. These are my two biggest complaints for any story. I wish authors wou

Great story. Lots of research went into this book, you can tell by the story. I found it fascinating. Gina kept me turning pages all the way through. She wrote a rich privileged heroine who grows stronger and finds the opportunity of independence through her kidnapping and rescue. The hero was impossible to resist with his sense of fairness and responsibility to his family of brothers by choice.

Safira is a mystery when Rurik of Birka meets her. She invades his bed at daybreak with a warning that

The story takes place in a time when Vikings were settling in and around the Frankish kingdom. The setting felt authentic and real, with lots of interesting facts and vivid descriptions of how people lived at the time. That was a real treat for me since I love historical bits in my romances.
After being separated from her family, Safira asks the leader of the Forgotten Sons to help her return home, and while Rurik can tell she’s hiding something, he agrees to help her

A Viking tale that will keep you entertained. Rurik is a Viking leader and is very loyal to his fellow brothers of the Forgotten Sons. But he has been wanting more than just moving from place to place and when offered some land, he is anxious to get to it. Beautiful Safira, the pampered daughter of a spice merchant has asked Rurik for safe passage home and an agreement is struck. But Rurik is anxious to get to his land and not take Safira home, but the more time they spend together he begins to ...more

Read this book on vacation and I think my traveling companions were a bit annoyed with me. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. Great story telling and attention to historical detail, compelling characters with a realistic romance for the era. Thoroughly enjoyed and will be reading the rest of the series for sure!

[read for the “pre-renaissance” square on the 2018 Ripped Bodice Romance Bingo]

I have many thoughts about this book - I like Viking stuff, I enjoyed this for the most part, but there is a lot of Alpha Male stuff and honestly I don’t think you NEED that, even though Vikings.

I received this book as an ARC and having not read any of Ms Conkle’s books, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I really enjoyed this book. I have only given this book 4 stars because I found it a little hard to get into because I hadn’t read the books before it and also Ms Conkle likes to use authentic words, which can be a little hard to understand but after the first chapter, the characters really came to life for me. I found that all characters where well written with each of their own very disti ...more

The clash of cultures and battle of wills pepper this story of Rurik and Safira. The guy from the wrong side of the tracks meets the “princess”. Can these two overcome their differences to make a life together? Rurik’s loyalty to the Forgotten Sons wars with his love for Safira in a beautiful story that will frustrate you but ultimately make you love them.

Why I picked up this book:

I stumbled across this book when chatting with a critique partner about cover designs. This particular one stood out like a beacon. It’s stellar, and I love the colorization. When I read the blurb I got sucked in, and by the time I read the first page I was doomed. Hooked, whatever you want to call it. I was all in.

This review may contain spoilers.

What I loved:

Gina Conkle’s voice is stellar. The way she weaves her words together and how she tells this story is absolute

Viking romance- YES PLEASE! Not entirely sure what I was expecting, maybe hardcore like the tv show Vikings but with romance? Or maybe something more like medieval romance? I got a less bloody and brutal version than the tv show but enjoyable nonetheless.
Set in France with a Viking occupation through certain areas, our heroine is kidnapped from her wealthy home in France and manages to talk her kidnappers out of killing her and instead selling her. Enter our Viking hero and his band of merry Vi

Whoa was this book amazing! I love Gina's Viking tales. The First in "Forgotten Sons" Series, Rurik meets a beautiful woman who makes him an offer he can't refuse. Safira has been kidnapped and needs to get back home to Paris. Safira was supposed to marry a wealthy Prince; however, she was kidnapped and must lie to keep her virginity. She weaves one tale after another letting the man who bought her think she is a seer. She is not but she can tell stories (Skald) and can she barter. Trade is her ...more

Will it be the woman or the reward? Safira had no choice but to hide and pretend to be a seeress to survive but now she has found the help of a band of Vikings but what will the cost be? Rurik and the forgotten sons travel to be the best that they can be, they are hard men all with bitter pasts but they are brothers no less. I always approach historical romances with trepidation. I love the genre, but as a historian, I often find myself frustrated by all the inaccuracies. I do not expect perfection, and I am aware that in order for some literature to make sense in our modern day world concessions have to be made. Luckily, I am not an expert in the Vikings in France. I am a lot more at home with the Vikings and Anglo Saxons in the UK. So, any glaring inaccuracies to do with the Viking occupation in parts of France we ...more

KEPT BY THE VIKING by Gina Conkle is an awesome Viking Romance. #1 in her new and exciting FORGOTTEN SONS series, and what a beginning!
I absolutely loved Rurik, the Viking leader, who is brave, strong, his word is his bond and Safria, a sultry Parisian thrall, who uses her wits as well as is cunning and full of secrets and surprises.

Fast paced, filled with secrets, intrigue, surprises, romance, danger, and a HEA. The characters are well developed, engaging and a force to be reckoned with. I was

Viking romances are a dime a dozen so it must have something to make it stand out. It is evident that Author Gina Conkle did her research when writing about the era and creating her characters. Conkle’s lead Safira stands out as a strong and resourceful heroine even when the odds are stacked against her. She is not only likable, she is relatable.

Filled with historical trivia and authenticity, Kept By a Viking feels as much a historical fiction as it does a romance. That being said, as another re

I am voluntarily submitting my honest review after receiving an ARC of this ebook via NetGalley.

I have been on a bit of a "Viking kick" lately, and I devoured this book in one sitting. It is very well written, with lots of detail about Viking life and custom, as well as the monumental power shift occurring in France at that time while Vikings were taking over the land and simultaneously fighting among themselves for supremacy, But that richness of detail does not in any way detract from the deve

Read it in one sitting. I am a sucker for a Viking tale....oh yea. Rurik and Safira's story was poignant and a sexy dance. I enjoyed the tale as Safira enters Rurik's life as a woman who needs protection and in exchange for information he will see her home to her family in Paris. Rurik has no idea who this woman is but reluctantly agree's to a barter in exchange for what he wants....her. I found the story to just grab me an

I love my Vikings

I fell in love with Gina Conkle Vikings in her first book Norse Jewel! I have love each Viking story she has written. Kept by the Viking brings us another story of the fierce life the Vikings lived and the kindness of many of these valiant warriors.
Rurik and Safina are ice and fire. She wants to return to her home in Paris and barters with the Viking back and forth to get her home all the time watching him win quiet battles with her as they learn trust in their cruel and violen

Rurik and his brothers in arms are escorting Safira to Paris , or so she thinks , after being rescued by them that was the deal she made.
However they are off to Rouen and have no intention of keeping to the deal .
Sparks are flying between our H and h , will they still be flying when the truth is known or will the romance fizzle and die .
Quite enjoyable, a good read , lots of action .

A solid start to a new historical romance series that is part Vikings TV show (although with less violence) and part star-crossed lovers. The fiery leading lady is Frankish, while the male lead is Viking. Includes actual historical details (events, places, and culture), which is one of the main reasons I read this author, plus a steamy romance. I look forward to the next one. For historical romance fans.

Amazing Viking story !!!

I loved every minute of this book. Gina brings you to the Viking festival. To the hall of Jarl Will. You can see the soapstone lights hanging. The carvings in the hall sound so fascinating !! I fell in love with Rurik and Safira. Safira isn't a warrior. She uses her wits. And she is amazing !! I can't wait for more Forgotten Son's !! I highly recommend this book! 💖💖💖

Not what I expected. Not at all. But that is in the most positive way. Historical stories are normally much alike each other but this one surprised me. Well written story with a nice storyline and plot. I like that the characters and how they develop. Would have liked the language to be more true to the time period. I failed that sometimes. A passionate and emotional read with twists.
Enjoyable and recommendable.

This was an enjoyable book. It was evenly paced, well written, and not so easy to put down. This was the first time I’ve read anything by Gina Conkle and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Especially the next book in the Forgotten Sons series. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a way to kill time.

Viking books are a subgenre I normally don’t care for. This book is a marked exception to that rule. The author expertly humanizes the period of Viking expansion in Europe, creating believable adult characters, rather than caricatures, in a historically relevant world. Stayed up late to finish this book. An utter joy to read. Highly recommended.
