Having not read a recent Marvel comic in some time (truly, the late 1980s as a kid), more or less everything about this story came as a shock. The art and layout was dynamic, the story was shocking, and at the same time really down-to-earth.
The intent of the purchase was to provide a comic for my middle son, who is over-the-moon about Spider-Man. Being completely oblivious of the story, and without looking inside, we bought this one along with a few others (always read the summary, folks). Needl ...more

This book is an absolute roller coaster to read. Dan Slotts run on Spider-Man kicks into high gear on this one shaking up Spider-Mans world. I'm really looking forward to starting volume 2 now to see where the story goes.

The collected first part of the Superior Spider-man saga. Fantastic way of turning the Spider-man mythos on its head, instead of Spidey bonding with a symbiote and turning a dark turn this involves some mind swapping.
The premise of this is a dying Doc Ock swapping his mind with Peter Parker. This leads to some interesting ideas as Ock wants to be a better Spider-man than the original, both behind the mask and in the mask. This sees his personal life evolve in some interesting ways. Spidey himsel ...more

One hell of a story arc - I found the idea to be shocking and engaging, and it was interesting to see what Otto Octavius did when he was in Peter Parker's body, and the decisions he made.
What Otto did, in stealing Spiderman's body, was obviously wrong and I can not condone that action especially as in the switch, Parker had been left to die in Dr. Octopus's old body. But it's still one hell of a story, man.
But Otto does learn a few things along the way and falls in love. In the end, Parker does ...more

It's been a couple of decades since I've read any new Marvel issues, so I was a little surprised to see Aunt May married and Peter and MJ not married, but that's just me. I thought also I had heard something about Peter unmasking himself to the world after that Civil War thing, but I guess that has since been forgotten? I am vaguely aware we are in an age of rebooting/relaunching every character and team and franchise every third Thursday, so my surprise was short lived, and I soon got into the

Even though the premise and idea of this whole comic is absolutely absurd, it somehow works and works very well. This is a really interesting take on if Doc Ock took over Peter Parker’s body and decided to be Spider-Man... which if you ignore the bad taste it leaves in your mouth to think of the logistics of it, you’re left with a very interesting meal.

In short, Superior Spider-man tells the story of Doc Octopus in Spider-man's body.
The long version:
This is a fresh take on Spider-man, reminding me much of Jean-Paul Valley's Batman.
As a strategist, Doc Ock is a far superior Spider-man, being able to anticipate all possibilities and devise a plan for pretty much any outcome (much like what Batman does).
He also doesn't mind getting his hands dirty and punishing those who threaten the safety of New York and its inhabitants. Despite his brilliancy ...more

My exact rating for this is 4.75, rounded up I gave it 5 stars. A definitely outstanding concept for a superhero story and for a long-time and well loved comic book character. Now I understand how much the Superior Spider-Man series revolutionized our usual perspective on superheroism. This is Dan Slott's best!
