I really enjoyed the first two novels in this series featuring former Marine and now-railway cop Sydney Parnell. This had the same great characters, but now Sydney is in Mexico trying to rescue the orphaned boy of the women who was an interpreter for the Marines in Iraq. (Her home base is Denver, Colorado.)

I love the characters of Sydney and her canine partner, Clyde. The characters who both help and her the protagonists along the way are also well drawn and believable. There is a lot of action

Short and sweet with this one. Life has gotten in the way.

In this third book featuring Sydney Rose Parnell, we finally get the backstory of her time in Afghanistan and just what the hell happened that is making someone want to kill her. And there is a big surprise in Sydney’s future as well. And some shocks.

I’m loving this series and especially Clyde. What a great dog!

I really did like this book; I'm especially happy with the choices Sidney made in the end. That said, I'm deducting some points because there was a twist in this book that I've seen done before and I'm not a fan. It smacks too much of a plot line lifted straight out of a daytime soap opera...but the author went there so, fine. What's done is done...but because it was done, the very nature of the twist demands a certain amount of attention. It necessitates that some very serious convers

Another excellent installment in the Sydney Parnell series: an ex-Marine, with her K-9 partner Clyde, who now works as a railway cop. She follows a lead to Mexico to try to find Malik, a young Iraqi boy, whose mother and GI boyfriend were killed there while he watched. Sydney is drugged and carried off, but is reunited with Malik by a mysterious man living in a mountain retreat. She returns to the States only to find that the members of her unit are being killed off by the mysterious person she ...more

I’m not much for gushing over a book, but I do get a little excited when I find one that is firing on all cylinders. That is the case with “Ambush,” the new Sydney Rose Parnell thriller from author Barbara Nickless.

This is the third book in the series, though that shouldn’t stop you from reading it. Although Ms. Nickless references some of the past events, new readers should have little trouble understanding

This series just gets better and better. So realistic.

Wow - was not expecting such an edge-of-my-seat Sydney Parnell a la Jason Bourne thriller from beginning to end!! One of the story arcs, that's been unfolding from the first book, comes to a high-octane conclusion with lots of unexpected twists along the way. I could not put this book down!! Looking forward to more adventures with Sydney, Clyde and Mike - love these characters! Oorah! ...more

Railway detective Sydney Rose Parnell and her K-9 partner, Clyde, join in the investigation into the murder of a railway security guard by a homeless man. Sydney soon realizes that the case is connected to the conspiracy revolving around the deaths of a Marine and interpreter in Iraq as well as the actions of the mysterious Alpha who is determined to keep the events secret.

While it is good to finally have an explanation and closure surrounding Sydney's past in Iraq during the 2nd G

I'd give Barbara Nickless all the stars in the world if I could. I think she's fantastic. Her writing is that perfect blend of smart and original, gritty and authentic, without ever being a distraction or making it sound like she's trying too hard. I've loved every book in this series, and I admit I was nervous coming into this one because what if something TERRIBLE happened to the characters (and dog) I'd grown to really care for? I'm not going to spoil anything, and lots of fairly gruesome thi ...more

This series just gets better and better with each entry. I love the whole series but at the heart of it is one of the best female characters in not just today's literature but of all time. She is so wonderfully nuanced and developed and her partnership with Clyde is the heartbeat. I just have to believe that Hollywood is going to

"...sometimes the monsters were real."

Railroad cop and former Marine Sydney Parnell and her K9 partner Clyde are back again in this third book in an excellent series - after BLOOD ON THE TRACKS and DEAD STOP.

This time Sydney starts out in Mexico City searching for an Iraqi boy that she came to know in the Marines who is in danger.

This was an excellent story but I missed what makes this series unique - the railroad. This story focuses on Sydney's time in the military and the danger that has follo

I wasn't looking forward to this one because I knew that it dealt with the conspiracy over Iraq. I am not a fan of long running conspiracies. But it was better than I expected it to be and had a fast pace. There was a twist in this that wasn't much of a surprise if you had been paying close attention. I had been expecting it and was at least satisfied with how it was resolved. This one was the hardest to put down. I'm glad I finally read this series and am looking forward to the next book later ...more

GNAB . This is the third Sydney Rose Parnell novel I have read, and I only grow fonder of this former Marine lady cop as time goes by. Centered in the Denver, Colorado area, with flashbacks to Iraq and starring war dog Clyde, this mystery is complex and deeply hidden, the characters are wholesome and empathetic except for the bad guys, and the backgrounds are picturesque and compelling. Barbara Nickless is an author I am following, one I am happy to refer to friends and family. She mixes togethe ...more

What a powerhouse finale to a fantastic series!

The scope of this story was impressive with Sydney traveling from Mexico to Denver, while also revisiting memories from wartime in Iraq. I loved the way the mystery first introduced in book 1 became the focus of Ambush, with plenty of shocking twists and turns along the way.

At the heart of it all was the relationship between Sydney and her canine partner, Clyde. How they continued to grow and help each other was so sweet.

I'll miss Sydney Rose's char

Publicist Wiley Saichek gifted me with the mystery/thriller Ambush by Barbara Nickless via Amazon. I had not read the previous two books in this series, but I read a Goodreads review that assured me that this book can stand alone. It resolves a major ongoing issue in the female protagonist's life that relates to her military service in the Iraq War, and contains all the background necessary for understanding it.

I was interested in the fact that protagonist Sydney Rose Parnell is a Marine. I'm

Ambush, the third book in author Barbara Nickless's Sydney Rose Parnell series is a great mystery tale and an enjoyable read. In this novel, Sydney Rose leaves Denver to finally address a mystery that has haunted her since her days as a Marine in Iraq.

Maybe it's the disengagement from her role as a railroad cop and the absence of Clyde, her brilliant ex-Marine Belgian Malinois, during the first half of the book that dropped my enjoyment down to 4 stars from the 5 that the previous two series boo

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this arc. I had marked my calendar with it's publication date and it was a special thrill to read the arc for me.

Sydney is one tough Marine (former) and up to her armpits in trouble. This was an intense read for me. This was the 3rd book in the series and they really should be read in order. And I have read them in order, but am tempted to re-read all 3 of them again on a good "binge" weekend. An excellent police procedural / global conspiracy / study
I loved the first two books about Sydney who is a railway cop in Denver and a former Marine. Pretty unusual set up, huh? and I thought it was unique and different enough to follow through with this series. This one annoyed me in parts for various reasons. I sort of forgot that it is a continuing story about a little boy that Sydney first meets in Iraq but now 3 years later, he is now in hiding in Mexico. So a lot of this particular book had to play catch-up. I forgot about the dead comrades that ...more

A little slow to pull me in, but once I was pulled in, this one wowed me. No giveaways, but it definitely had a surprise or two. Clyde was awesome. Sydney, although still carrying past trauma, is a strong main character.

There are relationships in this book which I really like but it isn't what I would call romantic suspense. It's a suspense book with characters who have a relationship. I really like this style myself.

I really recommend this series, but start with book 1.

Sydney Rose Parnell #3

Intrigue from beginning to end – who can anyone trust and who is the Alpha that is pulling the strings that causes people and even children to be kidnapped, tortured and killed? Sydney and others want to know and do all they can to find the monster and cage it.

This book had me looking up which division of the military deals with the dead, what they do and how traumatic their job actually is. I also found myself looking up what transit police do an

I enjoyed this so much. I loved being back with these characters and how this book dealt with the aftermath of what went down in Iraq. This book was so fast-paced and there were so many plot twists. Sydney is such an amazing character and I cannot wait to see what she has in store next.

I love, love, love this series. Each book keeps getting better and better and this one is the best yet.

Sydney Parnell is a character I can't help but identify with. She is determined, stubborn, brave and vulnerable all rolled into one. Together she and her K-9 partner Clyde make a formidable duo and they will need each other to solve this mystery that has links to Sydney's time in Iraq and the loss of the love of her life. Or does ghosts have a tendency to return to the land of the living?

Wow! What a thrill to read this the third in the Sydney Rose Parnell series.

Sydney and her canine partner Clyde are really in for action in this their latest adventure. She is trying to find an eleven-year-old Iraqi boy named Malik. He apparently knows secrets worth killing for, at least according to an assassin code named Alpha who is also looking for him.

She joins in with a team of covert operatives and soldiers to hunt for Malik – and Alpha. Their travels take them to Mexico and other

Another fine installment in the adventures of former marine, now railway cop Sydney Parnell and her K9 partner, Clyde.
This one starts with Sydney in Mexico City searching for an Iraqi boy who she took under her wing when his mother was brutally murdered during the war, who is now missing, and takes off from there. The action starts right away as the mystery of who's hunting the boy and other Marines Sydney served with intensifies. Fast paced and tightly wound this story pulls together the thread

I'm really enjoying this series! Although this book didn't have a railroad setting, it cleared up some of the background in Sydney's life from while she was an Iraqui marine. I was grateful for that! The plot was action-packed and intense, with more gore than I usually like to read. For me, getting to read about Clyde (Sydney's Belgian Malinois) makes up for a lot, however. I continue to be wildly in love with him!

I always like reading the author's notes at the end of these books. I thought it

Ambush wraps up the story arc started in book 1, focusing on resolving the mysteries of what happened in Iraq and who is threatening Sydney and her Marine colleagues. It starts with a bang - an opening sequence worth of a James Bond film. Then Sydney gets off to poking around and pulling on threads. I love the nuanced relationship she has with Cohen and the fact that they are both dealing with Sydney's baggage the best they can. Some parts of the ending showdown were a little ludicrous for me (v ...more

I didn't like this one as much as the first two in this series. The first two were very interesting with crimes relating to railway policing. This is primary about her days as a Marine in Iraq. My biggest issue was that it has been a year since her last book. I have read a lot of mysteries since then and I needed some refreshing on who was who from the previous books. The author just assumed I remembered the previous characters. 3.5 ...more

This book was so much better than i had thought. I am not fond of the cover and although i know one should not judge a book by it's cover, it didn't really entice me to read sooner. As it turned out, i really enjoyed this book. So much so that i shall be downloading other books by this author as i do belong to Kindle Unlimited.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review, freely given.
