This photographic non-fiction book gives many examples of the similarities and differences between alligators and crocodiles. The story begins by discussing some of the characteristics such as the bumpy texture of its skin. After discussing the characteristics, the story moves on to explain the differences between alligators and crocodiles. Chapter three then shows how crocodiles and alligators build nests to lay eggs. The story ends by giving examples of different species within the crocodile/alligator family.
I thought that this book was pretty good. It would be a great read for an elementary student interested in learning about alligators or crocodiles. I think one big draw-back in this book would be the pictures in the section that discusses the differences between alligators and crocodiles. The pictures did not show these differences very clearly because of the angle and lighting of the pictures.
I think this book did a good job of using words that would be easy for young students to understand. However, the book is fairly long so I can foresee a child getting bored with it. I think this book would be a great resource for a unit on crocodiles/alligators. It could also be a great resource for an example to use in a Venn Diagram. The students could use the information they learned in this book to practice sorting information in a Venn Diagram.

If you need a straight-forward, 400-ish Lexile nonfiction text on the differences between crocodiles and alligators, then Snap! fits the bill. If you're looking for a bit more textual meat with your basic facts, you might be disappointed.
I used this book within the Sprint Reading program from Scholastic. My 3rd grade group of students liked it, mostly because they are interested in animals of all kinds, however the text lost their attention as the book study went on. They had great questions that the book did not answer, and the photos needed captions, for goodness sake!
On the plus side, the book's shortcomings precipitated invention--and some fun reading-related activities. Students liked Googling their questions and adding the answers to the KWL chart; they created their own glossary of content-specific vocabulary words; and added captions of their own to photos of crocodiles. Sometimes it's not the book, but the readers.

I love that it explains the differences between alligators and crocodiles... but I don't know that I would recommend this as a Hi-Lo reader for middle school kids ("High Interest" / "Low Challenge"). It feels like an elementary school book, and unless your kid is begging to read about alligators and crocodiles...

it was about alligators and crocodiles. it talked about baby alligators and crocodiles and how they eat and stuff
