Let's Take Care of Our New Rabbit

Rate this book
Titles in the Let's Take Care of ... color-illustrated series introduce younger boys and girls to the fun and responsibility of pet ownership. Each book tells the story of a boy and girl who get a pet and learn how to care for it. These charming books emphasize that acquiring a pet is an exciting adventure for children, and it often makes little difference whether the new pet is as tiny as a frog or as large as a hound. Kids who read these books will share the excitement of the stories' children as an introduction to getting a pet of their own. A Guidelines section supplements each story with advice and information on pet care that is geared to children's capabilities. Parents and kids will want to read that section together.

Our New Rabbit is a delightful little book that advocates the humane care of pet rabbits. The story begins when the rabbit arrives at her new home. The text makes clear the new rabbit is a ‘house bunny’ and was adopted after much careful consideration of the responsibilities she entails. Indeed, responsibility and patience are two themes stressed throughout, and the text includes the line “a bunny is no toy.”

The book also illustrates the proper way to hold a bunny, essential information that can help prevent human bites and rabbit injuries.

A veterinarian’s advice section in the back is geared toward the adults who will assume most of the responsibility for a new family pet.

There’s only one downside in this book—although the text focuses solely on keeping bunnies indoors, one illustration depicts two rabbits in an outdoor hutch.
