I love this series a lot. This book slots in beautifully: I love what Ethan's character is becoming, and I love the in-the-background exploration of different kinds of strength. This builds on the previous volume of short stories really well - and it's interesting, seeing Ethan's story unfold over a number of short stories instead of in a novel-length volume. Ethan's behavior and his role also do a great job of showing (not telling!) the power of the path Dimilioc chooses and why they're able to ...more

Thoroughly satisfying

When i read a series--and the author is a very good writer--i start to believe in the characters as is they were friends of mine . I care about what happens to them and can't wait to meet them again in book after book. My fear is the author may get tired of writing about them...i hope she is like the authors who have at least e dozen or book about the same people. I want to know who Justin and Miguel and Riss and Amera and Keziah And Alejandro will fall in live with; how Cas

3.5 stars. I've been doing so much re-reading lately, it's nice to have something fresh and new to me!

Rachel Neumeier does short stories really well and the Black Dog series is a very creative spin on werewolf type fantasy. (There are other mystical creature too.) I really enjoy this series and the nice world-building RN has in hand.

As always, werewolf fantasy either succeeds or fails on how the author handles their characters' dominance/culture/lupine nature as vs. their humanity in their alter

I was so excited when I realized this book was coming out.

Every one of these stories is awesome. I feel like we're well setup for the next novel.

Some occur during the last Black Dog novel and some after it.

It's cool to see that being a black dog doesn't protect you from PTSD, which is basically what Carissa is suffering from.

It's neat to see people placed/forced into leadership positions and how they deal with the uncertainty of it all.

Splendid as always

I love this series of books. I like how there is a consistency of book, short stories, book, etc and how they are all evenly connected. This series should be more well known!

I tend to dislike short stories, but these were long enough that I forgot they weren't just parts of the next book. I loved learning more about some of the minor characters, and just spending time in this world, especially since I was in withdrawal after finishing book 4.

Rachel Neumeier started writing fiction to relax when she was a graduate student and needed a hobby unrelated to her research. Prior to selling her first fantasy novel, she had published only a few articles in venues such as The American Journal of Botany. However, finding that her interests did not lie in research, Rachel left academia and began to let her hobbies take over her life instead.
