"The Swan's Road" takes the reader into a living, breathing eleventh-century landscape. As the young prince Harald journeys through unfamiliar lands, he encounters many perils: hostile people, power battles, and treachery from within. The best part is that he learns much about people he meets along the way, whether they live in grand halls or filthy hovels. He also learns more than a thing or two about himself. The language recalls the cadences of older chronicles and reflects the rhythm of trav ...more

“So tell me, how does a son of the illustrious King Cnute come to be in Friedland rescuing my niece from Norman abductors?

All roads lead to Rome, especially when your father, who so happens to be King Cnute, has made an alliance with Conrad, the Holy Roman Emperor. However, what was meant to be a long but worthwhile journey takes a sinister turn.

“Stay out of trouble,” that had been King Cnute’s warning to his son, Harold. Harold tried, he really did, but when he met the beautiful Selia, he feare

The Swan’s Road by Garth Pettersen

My thoughts upon finishing this book were that:
* Young boys/teenagers would love it
* Young girls/teenagers might love it
* It brought to mind the book Otto of the Silver Hand even though I have not read it in decades
* The term “saga” fits it well
* The journey of Harald is one in which he learns a great deal while traveling not only about those he meets on the road but also about himself
* The style of writing added to the story and made it feel I was in the past

Petterson writes a great read, "The Swan's Road." This well researched book takes the reader on a journey through eleventh-century Engla-lond and Scandinavia with young Prince Harald and the beautiful Frisian maiden, Selia and their cohorts. The discriptors used appeal to all sensations and senses riveting the reader to its pages as they hike, horseback and sail through many perils: foreign territories, rugged terrain, and stormy seas casting them into mighty conflicts, malicious caitiffs and ca ...more

This is a very character driven novel and I love the fact that Garth Pettersen gave us both characters to root for and dislike.

My favorite part of this novel was the fact that along the way you don't know what is going to come next. The novel is not predictable and you feel you could end up anywhere. There were many surprises and the way that the author was able to keep the pacing just right really helps everything flow naturally.

There is a lot going on and be prepared to be caught up in a whir

Garth Pettersen has a way of writing a plot that unfolds so seamlessly. Everything including the pacing was well executed.

There is so much history and truth to this novel, while incorporating plenty of fiction to add entertainment.

There is a variety of characters and all of them will intrigue the reader from the very beginning making flipping pages that much easier. I love it when I'm invested in a story like I was with this one.

Good story

A great journey that brings the reader right along in this adventurous and action filled story. Petterson writes a great story, filled with twists and challenges for Stella and Harold. There is a connection between the characters, and the story flows in a natural progression. It's a well written story, that keeps the reader rooting for the success of the mission. To save the king.
