This book was exciting to read. I enjoyed the characters of Nyminia and Rowan. They made quick great friends. I not sure I liked the ending on this book and I know it is only book 1 so maybe that is why. The whole book was not bad and kept me reading to find out what would happen next and what was Nyminia's part in everything. ...more

First and foremost, Tuesday Cross is an incredibly talented writer, and I do mean talented. Second, with this book I found her great sense humor-which had me laughing often (on a few occassions maniacally...*shrug*), an original story line, and creative characters. Third, I loved the detail of the magic and how it was utilized and Dragons! Yay! Can't help but love some dragons ;)! Nyminia is a young woman who has had a rough go at life, and you feel for her struggles-even with the little details First and foremost, Tuesday Cross is an incredibly talented writer, and I do mean talented. Second, with this book I found her great sense humor-which had me laughing often (on a few occassions maniacally...*shrug*), an original story line, and creative characters. Third, I loved the detail of the magic and how it was utilized and Dragons! Yay! Can't help but love some dragons ;)! Nyminia is a young woman who has had a rough go at life, and you feel for her struggles-even with the little details that were provided. Marcus, her very attractive counterpart, had his own levels of complexity which were interesting but sometimes a little dull.

I believe it has been a great injustice that anyone compare this book to any of the Twilight series. I read the entire Twilight series and this book Far exceeds anything that Stephanie Meyer's produced through the entirety of writing that series. This book is what she would have aspired to had she been seeking to write a more adventurous novel, in all honesty. I would say this book would be good for ages 15+, just for reference.

I adored Tuesday's writing style, it was so well written and beautifully presented. It was inspiring to soak up her writing style!
That being said, there were a few issues I had with the story/book. First, there was just Way too much that happened in this book. I mean there was so much constant action/danger that it exhausted me as the reader, and the bigger picture at hand seemed to get lost continually with every-single-thing that happened. I'd say this was a bit of a pacing issue more than anything, because I appreciated all that occurred just not the frequency, but some I feel could have been avoided. It was a constant cycle of sleep and danger for Nyminia, which became tedious and frustrating. Second, the book needed to be better edited. There were more grammatical/formatting/spelling issues than anticipated. At one point in my reading the font size/formatting changed for about a page and a half, which really threw me off while reading. Those two things are why I would rate this book 3.5 out of 5, but not any reasons that I would not read her future works, either-I am definitely a fan of Tuesday Cross.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book for its writing style and storyline, and am eager for Tuesday's next book! She has an innate talent for writing that, as it continues to grow, will no doubt amass a sizable fan base.

This book was a wild ride where the action never stops. Each chapter, or two, in “Of Flesh and Fire” read like an episode of a supernatural college sitcom. Which makes sense as, I believe, that was how this was originally written—as episodic serials to be consumed like crack riddled popcorn. Like, seriously the action never stops from pretty much the moment we meet Nym. The girl is literally on fire when we meet her, and things spiral out of control from that moment on. Honestly, if you like bin This book was a wild ride where the action never stops. Each chapter, or two, in “Of Flesh and Fire” read like an episode of a supernatural college sitcom. Which makes sense as, I believe, that was how this was originally written—as episodic serials to be consumed like crack riddled popcorn. Like, seriously the action never stops from pretty much the moment we meet Nym. The girl is literally on fire when we meet her, and things spiral out of control from that moment on. Honestly, if you like binge-worthy, fast (both in pacing and length), occasionally sweet, stories with magic and vampires, you’ll probably enjoy this book. There are some new elements that I enjoyed, as they aren’t present in most supernatural books when it covers this kind of subject material, but there are other tropes that felt a little too unnecessary for the story. Also, while the book is incredibly fast and easy to knock out during a lazy vacation, there are so many interesting and, frankly, big things going on that I felt like “Of Flesh and Fire” was about 5 books crammed into one very short one.

Firstly, I did enjoy this book. It was a crazy ride, but it was easy to get into and lose myself in. It’s a story line I’m familiar with, but with enough twists to keep me from boredom. I really enjoyed Rowan’s spunk and her interactions with Nym, and I think having a magical college is a great idea because Harry Potter only goes so far. There is something massive happening in every chapter, whether it’s Nym learning that there’s magic and vampires to begin with, to being hunted down by crazy ex’s (both hers and her new boyfriends), to almost being killed on multiple occasions by other magic types, to trying to figure out who to trust while also trying to get a handle on this whole prophecy she’s at the center of in order to keep even more bad things from happening… See what I mean about there being a lot going on? We are given these little yummy bits and then they get wrapped in a chapter or two and we are moving on to the next thing, which negated so much tension each time a new challenge was presented. I really wanted to slow down for a bit and get to know this new world Nym found herself in. Heck, most of those things I mentioned, when they appear in the book, could have very well been their own novel or novella! That’s how much potential there is in each of those segments that just never gets unpacked. The entire book takes place in less than a week’s time span. That’s a lot to throw at Nym, and the reader.

Did I have fun reading this book? Absolutely! I was always engaged for one reason or another, which is why I wanted more. I wanted to spend more time on certain things, which may have lessened some of the tropes that are in the book. Like the unknowing all powerful savior (Nym), the ancient vampire falling for the young adult (honestly, my least favorite trope, but I get the appeal), and mustache twirling villains. If more world and character building had been established, whether in this book or spread out over others, there wouldn't have been this disconnect for me where certain things felt overly obvious, and some characters felt thrown in last minute, or changed in order to make things move in the right direction. But—even in spite of some of the issues I had—I didn’t want to stop reading. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next, even if I already had a pretty good idea of where things were going and how it was all going to end. The author has a great grasp of keeping flow and writing chapter endings in a way that always leaves you saying “one more chapter!”

If you’re one of those readers that just wants all things supernatural with magic, vampires, werewolves, dragons, and—apparently—a mermaid or two, this book will not disappoint you. It checks off all those boxes rather nicely. And while I had a lot of fun reading Cross’ work, it was the length that kept me from absolutely adoring it. Cramming so many cataclysmic events into just a week for your characters felt like overkill and kept me from feeling like I got to know the characters, or made me believe Nym could actually handle all the stuff being thrown at her. That and, as a pure matter of taste, the sheer amount of internal conversations became overdone and I’d have preferred her to actually speak to the people around her, but that’s just me. But also partially why this book is a 3.25 stars for me. Given how this book ended, I’m not sure how Cross is going to top things, but I’m really interested to see where things go from here for Nym, Rowan, and Marcus! I received this book as a gift and was happy to exchange for my honest opinion and assess its suitability for my niece who wanted a heroine set in a fantasy world. I can’t pass on a book unless it has humour and a good message. I found Tuesday Cross’s book to be exciting and fast-paced, a recipe for holding a teenager’s attention. I came to adore Nyminia’s character for she is brave, headstrong, and of high intelligence, all qualities that I admire. She soon learns that she is part of an ancient prophecy where her true name, Nyminia originated, and soon falls into an unconventional romance with a two thousand year old vampire veteran, Marcus.

I came to adore Nyminia’s character for she is brave, headstrong, and of high intelligence, all qualities that I admire. I shared in every one of her victories and losses, as though I were actually right beside her on every step of her journey. Her unusual appearance captivated me: hair as white as snow, pale skin, and with stunning violet eyes that scream unique beauty. Nyminia possesses the naivety of youth, but simultaneously boasts the wisdom of a century’s old being.

Nyminia’s blossoming romance with Marcus, a gentlemanly vampire and mage, was beautifully developed and had my heart thudding within my chest.

Another loveable character comes in the form of Rowan, a young werewolf girl and Nyminia’s first and best friend at RBU. We instantly see the pair form a tight bond and sense that Nyminia loves her dearly from day one of their meeting- ‘How could anyone be so instantly likeable?’
Rowan’s bubbly and adorable personality contrast strongly with Marcus’s dark and somewhat brooding nature, though both characters are steadfast in their loyalty to Nyminia and do anything they can to protect her from harm.

I loved the author’s personable style and conversational tone as it made this book easy to dive into with characters I could relate to on a deeper level. I loved how dramatic the storyline was and believe I’ve found a new favourite author of mine.

I now leave you with one last quote from the Headmistress of RBU. The quote is taken from near the start of the novel when the prophecy concerning Nyminia is first mentioned.

‘Our universe was born from fire, and by fire- all things must end.’

This quote instantly reminded me of how quickly the world around us can change and how the natural circle of life functions in the daily progression of our very own world.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend that you give it a read.

I actually give this book 4.7 stars.

The cover for Of Flesh and Fire has a little much going on for me, but I do like it. Lots of vibrant colors, and you know what kind of story you’re going to get with a glance. Tuesday Cross has incoorperated lots of good humor into the story, and it’s a fun, campy read.

I received this book from winning a Goodreads giveaway and I can't say how happy I am to have been able to read it!
If I could have, I would have given it 4.5/5 stars instead of 4. It was quite a 5-star book just because I felt there were things in the story that went way too fast. I would have loved a little more content to further understand things.

There was a disconnect

Somehow I didn’t connect with the emotions of the main characters and felt very little tension in the action scenes. Certainly there was no feelings of deep live or connection- everything was just superficial and skin deep. Meh.

Gosh, I thought I wrote this review a year ago, how embarrassing!
Disclaimer, I saw this in early draft version and made some suggestions on a site called Scribophile where both myself and Tuesday workshopped our novels. And so, it is with great pride that I purchased a paper copy of her book. I was firstly awed by that cover, it's pure beauty, and the contents of the novel itself did not disappoint.
