THE HOLBORN TOY SHOP: ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

“Watson," said Inspector Lestrad, "in all my years with the Yard I've seen a bit of everything. I’ve dragged bodies from the Thames and dealt with every sort of thief, murderer and swindler. You put a name to it and I can tell you a tale, but I've never heard of a more cruel and inhuman case than this."
Children of the streets are vanishing. An old, shawl-draped woman, carrying two dolls in a wicker basket is the only clue. The long trail leads Holmes and Watson to a vicious criminal. They avoid one deadly trap only to fall into another as they close in.

“The Holborn Toy Shop” by Maurice Barkley is a better than average entry into Holmesian literature. It is well crafted for a short story (I prefer the novel). I thought the story was well done, including the dialogue and the description of Holmes' deductions. Here Holmes appears equal to the day and certainly more clever than the often sleight of hand gimmicks found in many of the pastiches offered in literature.

In this short story, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are called upon to investigate the disappearance of many of the children of the streets of London. Children of the streets are vanishing. An old, shawl-draped woman, carrying two dolls in a wicker basket is the only clue. Lestrad says, "In all my years with the Yard … I've never heard of a more cruel and inhuman case than this."

I felt it was a good effort at writing in the style of Doyle. Dr. Watson is again the story teller and recalls the events of the mystery just as in the original works. “The Holborn Toy Shop” is a good pastiche with a well-crafted plot. I read it in one enjoyable sitting! If you are interested in a nice, well thought out short mystery story, this is one to try!

A short story in which Holmes, while being twice tricked via the same gambit no less, still appears equal to the day and more clever than the often sleight of hand version found in many of the pastiche which abound.

A bit fetched but worth reading.

Several interesting twists to keep the reader interested. A conclusion befitting Sherlock Holmes. X x x x ,x x x
