As usual, the per-story reviews are below this section. But first, a ranking of said stories.

The stories I REALLY liked: The Sum of Her Expectations, The Last Boast-Builder in Ballyvoloon, Intro to Prom, Shiomah's Land

Great: Red Lights, And Rain

Good: The Psychology Game

Not a fan: The Nightingales in Platres

The per-story reviews:

The Sum of Her Expectations: First of all, I love what the title is a reference to within this story. I like the idea of the aliens and I also love the possible metaphor

Review solely for Finbarr O’Reilly. "The Last Boat-Builder in Ballyvoloon"

A cautionary tale, and very likely the best short SF I've read this year. Be careful what you wish for! And, no matter how smart you are , Evolution is smarter than you ...

Most highly recommended, and should find a spot on the award ballots this year. Reprinted in Clarke's Best Science Fiction of the Year: Volume Three (2018).

I enjoyed almost all the stories (and even most of the non-fiction.)

"The Sum of Her Expectations" by Jack Skillingstead
A woman with daddy issues crash-lands on a planet whose previous inhabitants have transcended to non-corporeal form, manifesting themselves to visitors only in their heads, using mind-reading to provide appropriate forms. Kind of like an angsty ST:ToS episode. ***

WSFA discussed this issue in front of Neil Clarke and others from the magazine at Capclave.
"The Sum of Her Expectations" - Strong story. Some of the father stuff seems unnecessary. Ending a bit of deus ex machina, but well set up.
The Nightingales in Plátres - Sad, religious. Did Yanni do the right thing? Story doesn’t mention that Abraham DIDN’T sacrifice his son.
The Last Boat-Builder in Ballyvoloon-Slow reveal. Most of the story is revealing the background. But would people really be so

Your approximately monthly reminder: Patreon the Clarkesworld podcast to the tune of three dollars a month and you get an e-magazine of short science fiction emailed to you every month. The science fiction is, in general, very good, and this is well worth doing.

So why not do it, right?

The Sum Of Her Expectations - Jack Skillingstead ***
A woman finds herself confronted by her own abandonment issues when she attempts to rescue her robot friend from a planet overrun by city-building nanomachines. The representative of the sublimed society that created the builders adds to the creepiness and focuses her eventual catharsis.

The Nightingales In Plátres - Natalia Theodoridou **
A group of Orthodox Greeks in a generation ship find themselves stranded on a barren planet, waiting for the
