I do like a little bit of paranormal to a story. Well I got it in shed-loads in Anne-Marie Ormsby's novel, Purgatory Hotel. When Dakota is murdered, her next stop on the fabric of the universe is Purgatory Hotel and I loved this part. I was reminded of a Tim Burton film with Dakota's fellow guests hanging about, clawing, swearing, being generally miserably and spooky, and sometimes evil, although her next door neighbour, Betty, is a lovely character. But then the story took on real curves as Dak ...more

Wow! What a story. This book had me gripped. So quirky, so dark, so intriguing. I had to keep sneaking away from my family to read another chapter, desperate to find out the ending. Although some parts of it were really uncomfortable to read, it was all necessary for this story to be properly told. Anne-Marie Ormsby isn't just a skilled writer, she's a brave one. This book will stay with me for a very long time. I dare you to read it!

If you're a fan of creepy hotel stories you'll love this. When Dakota arrives at the hotel it's clear she's dead but why has she been put there with the worst kinds of people? The only way to move on spiritually is to face her own demons and make amends for the crime she committed in life.

Through a book in the Library of Remembrance she watches her life story being written out before her eyes, not only unmasking the identity of her murderer but also revealing her own crime.

We’re taken back to Da

Having been offered the chance to review this book, I decided it would be a good one to read around this time of year when we are all looking for something spooky or scary to get our pulses racing as the nights draw in and, having read it, I can confirm it will definitely do that, but it also offers so much more than simple scares.

This is an intelligent book, which explores a lot of fairly existential questions in a really innovative storyline and I was very drawn in to the story and the questio

Dakota Crow 'wakes' up face down in the mud and realises she is dead. She soon finds herself in the weirdest of hotels which she soon concludes is Purgatory. The hotel is full of people who have committed a heinous sin such as murder or rape. Dakota is shocked to find herself there as she has no idea how she could have ended up in such a place. She's a nice person after all. With no memory of the crime she committed that would check her into the hotel, Dakota must relive moments of her life aga ...more

This book was a bit more then I bargained for in a few spots. If it is a dark subject this book hits on it. Murder, Child Sexual abuse, crib death, mental illness suicide and more. Even with all that darkness this was still a book I could not put down.

In the book Dakota Crow wakes up with a headache in a strange place. She almost immediately finds out she is in Purgatory Hotel. But doesn't know why. She can't remember anything. She knows or least has a feeling she was a good person in life and

It's only on the odd occasion that I decide to read a paranormal story mainly because I can be quite a scaredy cat especially as I have got older. The thing I liked about Purgatory Hotel was that the menace was there hovering in the background but it wasn't too in your face and in a way this increased the tension as you never knew if something would jump out and confront Dakota.

Dakota is an intriguing character especially as you find out more about Purgatory Hotel you know that there is a valid

A first book by Anne-Marie Ormsby, this is very, very readable and is a real page turner. The whole set up of purgatory is imaginative and believeable, its a horror without gore and even though it's obviously chock full of dead people it isn't scary so much as chilling. I've got a bit of a thing about books with characters I don't like at the moment - I started off liking and worrying about Dakota but I ended up really not liking her or Jackson, they're well written characters but they're both e ...more

I got hooked immediately on the intriguing world Anne-Marie Ormsby created in her novel, Purgatory Hotel. Dakota Crow is trying to figure out how she got to Purgatory Hotel — the place where people come to atone for the sins in their last life and most likely the ones before. She knows she was murdered and her body dumped, but what led to that? Fortunately, Purgatory’s library has books with that info. And as her research reveals, Dakota's life was complex and filled with dark secrets. I thoroug ...more

A powerfully terrifying debut!

What a story and what an imagination! Dakota's journey was an epic trip swerving from the world's most chilling hotel (choc-full of equally chilling characters) to a spooky forest setting... to the workings of her mind. Gloriously gruesome and addictive.
