When his mother's life is threatened by a deadly illness, a young boy and his uncle begin a search for a unicorn and its powers of healing, and learn that certain forms of magic cannot be seized, but must be earned.
Pulled this off a shelf in my local library decades ago and haven't forgotten it since. Couldn't remember the title and have been looking for it ever since. Planning a full read of the series now. A memorable book that constantly calls me back.
A good introduction to the world of generic fantasy with a twist of a moral choice forced upon the main protagonist. This coming-of-age story may wrap itself up too well for many (it is a young-adult novel), but it's still an enjoyable read years later.
