When an ancient, forgotten god returns to conquer the city of Ravensgate, its inhabitants quickly discover that what makes the city magical, what powers its undead army and necessitates its college of necromancy, could also prove to be the city’s doom. Her city in chaos behind her, Preston, a student at Ravensgate College, is forced to flee the only home she’s ever known. With her father’s uncompromising colleague Yuri Vostov leading the way, Preston journeys to the Caliphate of Dust. In the midst of the life and color of this new land, she must find a way to save her dead and blackened city from the nightmares that hold it captive.

Super romp through a wonderful swords-and-sorcery world. There is secret tunnels, walking skeletons, and murderous rats -- and that is just the start! Crowder puts the fun back into fantasy in this tale where sticky breakfast pastries and carnivorous birds are just a few of the challenges faced by the heroine.

At first it looked like this would be a gritty Fafhrd and Grey Mouser 'life in a dark city with too many gods' sort of story, but then it exploded into a political scheming and intrigue story with an Odd Couple partnering at the center. The characters are crisply drawn, and you can practically taste the difference between Ravensgate and the Caliphate of Dust. Our mentor character stays shadowy and oblique, motives questionable until the end of the story. Which, although a surprise, was still in retrospect the only way this chapter could have ended. Even though there's been no indication of a second book, this world aches for more stories in it.

Great story of dark fantasy with parallels to George R. R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series. Ravensgate is spooky and atmospheric, while the Caliphate of Dust is its own special sort of creepy. If you like dark and atmospheric fantasy, intrigue, and undead, you'll love this book!

Intriguing Adventure

This book takes many themes and changes what you expect. This was a refreshing take and a good start to an intriguing fantasy series.
