It all started on New Year’s Eve, 2019. Despite being hearing impaired, Lauren Carnes was determined to go to Stefanie Anders’ party and celebrate the holiday like everyone else. But instead, she and four others got blasted through a portal into another dimension. They ended up with strange triangular marks branded on their forearms.
Worse yet, the whole thing happened again ten days later. Instead of a creepy landscape built by her new friend Mari’s dreams and nightmares, they fought to survive in a world built by Tony Rodriguez. In both of these alternate realities, ruthless black-cloaked Shifters tried to capture and exploit them as Mainworlders.
The third time is not a charm. Because on this journey, it’s Lauren’s fascinating—and dangerously silent—landscape everyone is stuck in.
This novel is the third of a five-part series, with each book written from the viewpoint of one of the five main characters as the story progresses: Mari, Tony, Lauren, Randall, and Stefanie.
Body-swapping and genies and portals--oh my! I'm a writer of clean-read Young Adult fiction who lives in the beautiful green state of Oregon, USA. My sci-fi debut, THE BODY INSTITUTE, explores themes of body image and identity. Its sequel, SPARES, released January 2021.
I have a Studio Arts degree and I'm a longtime SCBWI member. You'll usually find me in my writing cave, surrounded by my dragon collection and the characters in my head. I enjoy reading--mostly young adult novels--as well as drawing, painting, and working jigsaw puzzles. I also enjoy music and dance of all kinds.
Silent Scream is the 3rd in the Junction 2020 series and this time the portal is opened to Lauren Carnes’ dreamworld. As each journey into the friends’ dreams – and fears – takes place, the Shifters are always there. Trying to escape them – they want to return to Mainworld with the travelers, but that will erase all dreams – as well as the terrors conjured by Lauren’s nightmares, keeps the adrenalin high for the friends.
Lauren and her four friends, Mari, Tony, Randall and Stefanie, landed in a facsimile of Lauren’s Grandma’s home. The portal was there on the bedroom wall – they just had to return to it, and through it, after twenty-four hours. But their battle was far from over, and this one would be far worse than both Mari or Tony’s landscapes – and theirs were frightening enough.
Would they return home this time? Or would they be stuck in the terrifying Dreamworld that was made up of Lauren’s nightmares?
Wow! I’m thoroughly enjoying the Junction 2020 series by Carol Riggs and can’t wait to see whose dreamscape we visit in #4. The pace is electric, the author’s imagination fascinating. Highly recommended to fans of the genre - it's best to read them in order of publication though, so each story makes complete sense!
With thanks to the author for my digital copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
This book was definitely not what I had expected it to be. It was creepy but not as accelerating as the other in the series, especially compared with book 2. I was expecting the snow for some reasons but I was expecting more darkness and more silence. Lauren is a more complex and well balanced character than the rest of them and she has a particularly well organized mind that make her landscape livable.
The reason why this book is so creepy is because Lauren's fears are closer to everyone's childhood fears and things that could actually happen to you even in this world. She seems to be more mature than the rest of the group and it shows in the way her landscape is shaped.
The shifters are still there to be an annoying part of the dreamscape but they seem less organized. You would think that it would be way easier for them to set trap in a landscape where things are sort of peachy. I guess having Sanjen as the head throw them off a little and they are getting desperate. I'm sort of looking forward to EN-191. That sounds like it's going to be really terrifying.
Another good thing about this book is that we get an even deeper insight on how the portals actually work and the characters are brought even closer to each other by the adventure. I just hope Randall is going to finish what he started.

EDIT: I updated my review from when it was originally posted. Why? Because the author, Ms. Riggs, took the time to answer my questions (there had been several). Who wouldn't love to hear back from the author? I guess I'm special! LOL Just joking.
Anyways, I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review.
This has been a pretty good series thus far. While the other books in this series took the kids to unbelievable dimensions, I had a little issue with Lauren’s Boogeyman dimension. Originally, I questioned why the closets hadn't been boarded up or why houses simply hadn't been built without closets. But, thanks to the author, I realized why that wouldn't necessarily work.
Since I was privileged by having the author answer all my questions, I'm only left with a single question/comment.
Even if the Boogeyman is drawn towards the most scared kids/people in the town, why would Lauren be one of them? Yes, he is part of her nightmare, but she's also gotten to experience all he has to offer, so to speak. So, would she still be one of the most scared? Or is she even more scared now BECAUSE she's seen him/it in action?
In the end, the author is still grabbing my attention with this series and I can't wait for the next book to be released.
Another home run for me! I loved this book so much! I am really attached to all the characters and hearing Lauren’s story was heartbreaking! I am rooting for her and I can’t wait to see how her future pans out. I love how this series makes you think. What would my landscape look like? I am continually impressed with how well written and detailed these stories are! Even though they aren’t long books it leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat and craving more! I can’t wait to hear Randall’s point of view next!
This is probably the creepiest book I've ever written...well, except for maybe THE LYING PLANET. This novel follows the five portal travelers as they journey to a landscape built from Lauren's best dreams and worst fears. It's not light and fluffy throughout, but full of twists and adventure. Buckle up! I'm laying the groundwork for books 4 and 5. Hints start from book 1 and progress.
Can YOU guess some things about the upcoming nightmare landscapes?
4.5 Stars. What would it be like to totally lose your hearing? What if the fears you thought you’d outgrown could come back to haunt you? What if your nightmares are so bad, the inhabitants of said nightmares plead not to be sent back? Scary stuff.
