The story of a real-life superhero; Doc Like Mommy is a new children's book showcasing a working mother with a daughter who worships the ground she walks on. This book has it all; a strong role model, a strong bond between mother and daughter; all through a beautifully written rhyming picture book.
Doc Like Mommy is the first book I have read in a while that celebrated a strong "working mother". Working mothers often get painted in a negative light, are given a supporting role, or just non-existant. I was so overjoyed to see that this was not the case in Doc Like Mommy. The work-life balance will always be a struggle, however author Dr. Crystal Bowe wove in the positive aspects of being a working mother beautifully.
When you ask young children the question "what do you want to be when you grow up", you expect to hear a host of hilarious as well as creative answers. I love seeing a book illustrate how this little girl sees the value in her mother's job, so much so that she too wants to become a doctor. Having strong female role models is a huge part of raising strong girls who are able to articulate their dreams into realized accomplishments.
As you read the uplifting rhyming text and illustrations, the theme of strength is clear. I see the mother raising her daughter to not only fearlessly conquer her dreams, but to be resilient. I have definitely add this to my list of wonderful diverse books for strong girls.
Recommended for ages 2-5.

We read this for our Community Helpers story time. It's a cute story of a young girl who wants to grow up to help like her mom. It does a good job of showing how much work a doctor takes home, but it's also heartwarming to see the mom caring for her daughter's skinned knees and making time for her dance recitals. It's a fun read aloud because it rhymes and I like that it shows a strong female character, especially a woman of color. It's very short, which makes it a better choice for younger kids, like the 3-5 age range.
