Leaving fans “practically [begging] for a sequel” (Bookpage), critically acclaimed author Kristy Woodson Harvey returns with the second novel in her beloved Peachtree Bluff series, featuring a trio of sisters and their mother who discover a truth that will change not only the way they see themselves, but also how they fit together as a family.
After finding out her military husband is missing in action, middle sister Sloane’s world crumbles as her worst nightmare comes true. She can barely climb out of bed, much less summon the strength to be the parent her children deserve.
Her mother, Ansley, provides a much-needed respite as she puts her personal life on hold to help Sloane and her grandchildren wade through their new grief-stricken lives. But between caring for her own aging mother, her daughters, and her grandchildren, Ansley’s private worry is that secrets from her past will come to light.
But when Sloane’s sisters, Caroline and Emerson, remind Sloane that no matter what, she promised her husband she would carry on for their young sons, Sloane finds the support and courage she needs to chase her biggest dreams—and face her deepest fears. Taking a cue from her middle daughter, Ansley takes her own leap of faith and realizes that, after all this time, she might finally be able to have it all.

5 book comfort food stars to The Secret to Southern Charm, the second installment in the Peachtree Bluff series! 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
I discovered Kristy Woodson Harvey with the release of her debut, Dear Carolina. I quickly fell for this author’s smooth writing, endearing characters, messages of love, and the charm of known locations in her books! Ever since, I preorder all her books and gobble them up...waiting for the next year’s installment! They are comfort food after all!
The Secret to Southern Charm is the second in the Peachtree Bluff series, which focuses on three sisters, Sloane, Caroline, and Emerson, as well as their devoted mother, Ansley. The Secret is narrated by Sloane and Ansley in alternating chapters. Sloane’s husband is in the military and has gone missing. Will he be found alive, and how will Sloane handle her grief while also being a loving mom?
What did I absolutely LOVE? All.of.it. Every word. I enjoyed reading Sloane’s story and watching her grow as a character while in the loving arms of her sisters and mother. Kristy starts each chapter with a title, and I find it fun to search for the meaning of the title within the chapter. I think she’s done that with all her books, and I adore that added touch. The relationships among the sisters, the daughters with their mothers, and the children with their mothers- all so genuine and warm. The messages on love and second chances were palpable.
Elin Hilderbrand has called Kristy Woodson Harvey “the next major voice in southern fiction,” and I wholeheartedly agree. Having written four books in as many years, the quality is always there. I read somewhere that Kristy reads her own words over and over to make sure her writing flows, and it most definitely does.
Bottom line. If you are looking for a comforting read, don’t miss Kristy’s books. While I think The Secret to Southern Charm can be read as a standalone (some of the catch-up from the first book was included), you will love these characters so much, you won’t want to miss out on Caroline’s story in Slightly South of Simple. Because I can’t write about Kristy without mentioning my favorite book of hers, Lies and Other Acts of Love, which is an exceptionally huggable must-read. Speaking of, I have all of Kristy’s books on my huggable book shelf, including this one.
I received an ARC of this book from the author, and my preordered copy arrived on release day. I tend to buy extra copies to give as gifts because Kristy’s books are so universally loved. The Secret to Southern Charm is available now!
Grammy had said earlier that the accent was the secret to southern charm. But she was wrong. This putting on a brave face, carrying on, helping others, being kind and humble and giving, believing with all your heart that the world could be a better place and that maybe you could make it that way...that was southern charm.
The sequel to Slightly South of Simple picks up with middle daughter Sloane reeling from the news that her army husband is M.I.A in Iraq. Leaning on her sisters, Caroline and Emerson, and her mother and grandmother, Sloane is lost among memories of her relationship with Adam. But mother Ansley is also suffering as she tries to help her daughter and also sort out her feelings for a first love.
I absolutely love this heartfelt series and I was riveted to each page. Kristy Harvey writes a compelling and beautiful story that has me wishing I had a beach house in Peachtree Bluff.
Last year I read Slightly South of Simple and fell head over heels in love with not only Peachtree Bluff, but also the characters and Harvey’s smooth, fluid writing. I couldn’t wait to revisit Ansley, Caroline, Sloane and Emerson and now I want to pack my stuff move to Peachtree Bluff! Ok, at least take a vacation there?!
If the cover of STSC doesn’t make you long for warm weather then I don’t know what will, it’s gorgeous and the inside is just as pretty. This time around the story centers more on Sloane and her despair and hopelessness as her husband Adam, is missing in action. It flips between her point of view and Ansley’s and the entire family is in crisis mode for various reasons. This was much more emotional for me than the first book, it played off of some of my own worst fears and Harvey writes with a passion that tugs on the heart, it’s beautiful and insightful.
The characterization in this series is fantastic, this family of women are all relatable on some level and are the kind of people I would want as friends. I loved finding out more about Sloane, many of her chapters began with an old letter from Adam and they simultaneously broke my heart and made me swoon. You do still uncover some more details about the rest of the family, but Sloane is definitely front and center and her thoughts and feelings about motherhood, being a sister, wife and daughter were SO relatable that Harvey could be plucked them right out of my own head.
Once again this had it all, family drama, secrets, romance, humor and charm, I literally cannot wait for the next book. This is one to pick up when you want to be lost in the pages of a book, pack it for your next vacation, I don’t think you’ll regret it.
The Secret to Southern Charm in three words: Endearing, Warm and Wise.
Touching story about family and life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When it comes to family, it can be complicated. Arguments. Fights. Misunderstandings. When it all comes down to push and shove however, family is usually there to pick you up and brush you off.
This story is about a typical southern family. It is second in the series but I never read the first book. However, I never felt lost about what I may have missed as the author reconstructed back stories as they applied.
Told from a dual point of view, daughter and mother, we get a peek inside of an emotional minefield family who’s husband and soldier was missing in action. It is heartbreaking and emotional, but yet we see how family is there to help with the healing process. The author teaches us that we can move on, existing, and still function even with a broken heart.
And that’s just the daughter story. We also get mom‘s story. Emotional about caring for her mother. Her secrets. Her desires. We see that it’s hard to face the truth without hurting people. But this author took us on a ride of her anguished choices and the effects on her life.
The story had a lot of ups and downs for me. Both women had secrets and lies that they had to deal with that changed their life and those around them. I don’t want to say there was a happy ever after per se, but choices were made that would put a smile on your face in the end.
Delving into this family story will tie you up in their emotions and issues. This author writes a compelling and sometimes painful story that makes us thankful for family, messy or not. And she does it with beautiful southern charm.

A warm, witty and entertaining book perfect for a sunny day at the beach.
SUMMARY This is the second novel in the Peachtree Bluff series which features the three Murphy sisters and their mother as they struggle with the hardships life throws at them. Sloane‘s world is turned upside down when she is told that her military-strong husband, Adam is missing in action in Iraq. Finding the strength to climb out of bed or parent her two boys was impossible. Thankfully, her mother and sisters are there to help. Her mother Ansley puts her personal and work life on hold in order to support Sloane and to care for her own aging mother. Sisters, Caroline and Emerson are finally after three weeks able to coax Sloane out of bed. As she was emerging from her funk Sloane’s strategically place painting easel called out to her. She began painting again, and painting helped. But other family issues soon arose. Ansley’s mother health was declining, and Emerson didn’t feel well either. In the midst of all the chaos, a new neighbor moved in next door to Ansley. Actually, it was not a new neighbor but it was Jack, a lifelong friend and love-interest of Ansley’s. Jack holds all the secrets of her past. Jack was the one person she wanted a future with, but just not right now.
REVIEW
This little gem should be devoured on a beautiful day at the beach with wine and special brownies. The Secrets of Southern Charm is three generations of strong women who face life’s major challenges and overcome. It may not be easy, but they do it. The characters are well-developed and the sense of family is beautiful and strong. Even the family friends are delightful. I want Kimmy and Hippie Hal hosting my next birthday party. And Kyle can deliver my coffee everyday...and I don’t even like coffee. Do you think I can get him to bring me a sweet ice tea instead!
Kristy Harvey’s story telling is witty and warm. She creatively uses letters from Adam to Sloane before he was MIA to exhibit their loving relationship and highlight some of their issues. The tension Harvey created by Ansley’s fears of her past coming to light is very palpable and masterfully done.
While I did not read Harvey’s first book in the Peachtree Bluff series it did not stop me from enjoying this one. Never once did I believe I was missing something, but just the same, I have ordered the first one, Slightly South of Simple, which will just have to be read second! I’ll bet it will be just as entertaining as this one. The Secret of Southern Charm is recommended for those who love Southern fiction or anyone who wants to know what the secret is!
Thanks to Netgalley, Gallery Books, and Kristy Harvey for an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A wonderful little gem with a beautiful story to tell. This is the 2nd book in the series that will have you laughing and tearing up in small town Peachtree Bluff Georgia. I’m a huge fan of Kristy Woodson Harvey’s books and this one is even better than her last. I love this family, and I especially love how together they face their fears, heartbreaks and crisis through being strong resilient women. I enjoy seeing how it shows the true meaning of family through three generations of southern women. This author knows how to tell an intense filled story and towards the end I got misty eyed, it really pulled at my heart strings. I recommend first reading book #1 Slightly South of Simple to learn the characters and their family history. Highly recommend! 5 ☆
I just want to make a comment about this cover before I review the book. The cover I had on my ebook version of the book was of a woman on a beach stool reading a book. So, you wonder, what's so special about that? Well, on my version is she reading a book while on other versions I have seen is she reading on a tablet. Yes, perhaps it's not a big deal however, I just love that little detail that changes from version to version.

I figured that because I received the ARC to the third book in this trilogy/series I should have read at least the first one. So because I got a discount on it, I read it. And I thought this about the book--- ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Because the first book ended on sort of a cliff hanger I figured I would pick up the second so my ARC review would be a good one. My mistake. I wasted 11.99 and hours of my life to re-read the same crap that was in the first book. I paid that much to dislike the character's even more than I did with the first book. Hours of my life were wasted so I could be even more disgusted with the mother's spineless and whining behavior.
There was so much back story, self-flagellation, misery, death, and illness that I just wanted to grab the biggest bottle of Zinfandel that I could find and lose myself in it. That and to take some really heavy duty anti-depressants! I read NOT to get more depressed than I already am -yet this book had nothing in it but despair. Yes, we get a semi-HE...sort of. However, the younger sisters (and the next books main character, besides the mother) problems offset the middle sisters 'happy ending'.
And let us never forget the mothers ongoing crap with the father of her first two daughters. I am sooo over her whining.
I can clearly see that I am going to hate the third book and I probably can even tell you how the story is going to play out even before I read it. Blech! I really hope that this is not the case and I sure hate going into this next book with the taste of these last two books on my tongue.
I love all books by Kristy Woodson Harvey. This is my 4th book of hers. I liked this one alright. I preferred her others. This book was given to me free of charge by the publisher and NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Enter Here **Book Giveaway Contest ** Peachtree Bluff Three Book Series Set (paperback/US only) April 22-May 7, 2019. Winner announced May 8 along with my Q&A with Kristy Newsletter.
A favorite Southern author, Kristy Woodson Harvey returns following Slightly South of Simple, on my Top Books of 2017 the first in this “must read” Peachtree Bluff Series, with the second in the trilogy: THE SECRET TO SOUTHERN CHARM – a beautiful heartwarming Southern family drama. Top Books of 2018
The series is set in a small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff, Georgia —a historical coastal town based on the area where the author resides.
The First in the series: Slightly South of Simple we were introduced to the Murphy women. Ansley (runs a successful design business) the mother and her three daughters: Caroline, Sloane, and Emerson. The focus on Caroline, the eldest daughter.
The Second in the series: The Secret to Southern Charm is centered about the middle daughter, Sloane and her military husband, Adam. Sloan is the middle sister. Sloane receives the devastating news her military husband is missing in action in Iraq. She can barely function and the sisters (Caroline and Emerson) and mom support her to help take care of her children.
She is in a slump depressed and she also has secrets. They finally bring out her easel to try and convince her to get back into painting. In the midst of the troubles, the grandmother’s failing health, and intense feelings and issues of the family with the neighbor moving in next door to Ansley.
Yes, we get to hear more from Jack (the mysterious love interest of Ansleys) from years ago. Lots of fun secrets from the past!
I enjoyed how Kristy uses the letters between Adam and Sloane before he was MIA to showcase their relationship and their problems. These four women face many obstacles regarding the men in their lives, their careers and family – a perfect beach read!
If you have not already read an early reading copy of THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF PARADISE, (May 7, 2019) readers you are going to love this final conclusion, where we catch up with Emerson, the youngest daughter and see how Ansley and Jack’s relationship continues.
Check out my Q&A with Kristy, coming May 8, 2019, and learn more about the inspiration behind this entertaining series and the fun facts from the author.
As with all Kristy’s books, there is a strong sense of family, loyalty, and love —set in the South. She explores the powerful bonds between sisters, mothers, and daughters (also grandparents and grandchildren).
At the heart of her heartwarming stories, there are usually some complex emotions and dark family secrets of the past. I enjoy her multi-generational stories of strong women. (great titles, by the way) mixed with her charm and wit.
If you have not read this author, highly recommend! She dazzles and I adore everything she writes. Cannot wait to see what’s next. Being a Carolina (and Georgia) gal myself, these stories resonate and takes me back to my roots.
A special thank you to the author, Gallery Books and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
I immediately picked up The Secret to Southern Charm right after reading Kristy Woodson Harvey's fabulous first book in the Peachtree Bluff series, Slightly South of Simple . All I can say is that I loved every single bit of it but of course, that's not enough to describe the feelings and emotions this book gave me. The Peachtree Bluff series is about three sisters, Caroline, Sloane, and Emerson and their mom, Ansley, and TStSC is Sloane and Ansley's story (and more of her sister's too).
When SSoS ended, Sloane just found out her husband was MIA in Iraq, and I have to admit that struck me to the core in ways that some things just can't. You see, I identified with Sloane more than Caroline or Emerson because I spent 6 years as a military wife and experienced my husband being deployed three times. Thankfully he always came home safely, but there's always that nagging, heartwrenching fear and worry every night and day until they're home and in your arms. Kristy captured so wonderfully the essence of being a military wife-its fears but its strengths too. I cannot express how much I love that she took the time and care to get it just so right.
More than anything though, I loved again how this novel is about family, love, coming together in a time of need, strength, grace, and charm. I love this line from the book, "Grammy had said earlier that the accent was the secret to Southern charm. But she was wrong. This putting on a brave face, carrying on, helping others, being kind and humble and giving, believing with all your heart that the world could be a better place and that maybe you could make it that way...that was Southern charm" because I think it so perfectly describes the essence of the characters and the novel. The strong women in this book remind me so much of the women that I call family and friends. She writes honest, real characters that are relatable.
I love, love southern fiction and this is truly southern fiction at its best--unique, charming, refreshing, hopeful. I cannot recommend The Secret to Southern Charm highly enough and can't wait to read the last book in the trilogy, The Southern Side of Paradise , which releases on May 7, 2019!
I have a soft spot in my heart for southern literature. In college I had to read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and that book actually revived my interest in reading. At that time I hadn’t picked up a ‘for fun book’ in about five years so when I read that book even though it was for a class, I remembered how much I loved books.
One of the things that I loved about that book was the unique southern charm. Now that book was obviously not chick lit or women’s fiction and I am most certain that it was not meant to be ‘charming’ but the setting really stuck with me and since then I have read a number of books set in the south which brings me to this book and the Peachtree Bluff series!
So many things about this series scream southern charm! The characters, the setting, even the covers just remind me of sweet tea! When the first book in the series came up for review, I couldn’t say no. It just sounded so summery and fun and I absolutely fell in love with it. I have read other books by Woodson Harvey and she writes with such confidence in the genre that it’s hard for me to pass on any of her books! Since reading her first book, Lies and Other Acts of Love, then I have been eager to read anything by Woodson Harvey!
I love how real and honest Woodson Harvey writes. She doesn’t try and make her characters and their lives look all pretty and glamorous. If she did I feel like the characters would ring false. It’s her ability to create real characters with flaws, secrets, issues, and real life problems that makes them so endearing and entertaining. She adds in this great mixture of humor to her stories that even though the issues some of her characters are facing are tragic and sad, there is always a hint of humor which I think helps balance out some of the tragedy that’s going on. While this book has some seriousness to it, for me it was still a beach/summer read though, so don’t let the description fool you. I know reading about a military wife who’s husband goes missing etc doesn’t sound like a beach read but I promise that it isn’t bleak. Rather than give away too much, just pick it up and read it and you will see what I mean!
This book picks up where Slightly South of Simple left off but I don’t think you would need to read that book first to enjoy this one. Sure there are some references to the first book, but this book stands on it’s own so you could easily pick this one up and start there. Each book is about one sister (there are 3) so each book is each sister’s platform rather than one long narrative if that makes sense.
If you are taking a vacation and need something light to read and get lost in, Peachtree Bluff is a great place for that. Woodson Harvey’s writing is refreshing, confident, and knowledgable and I love watching her stories unfold. Each one is just as good or better than the one before!
****Spoilers ahead*****. I received a copy from Netgalley in return for an honest review so here it is. I wanted to like this book. I like the idea of this book and it really could have been a great book. Sadly it fell flat for me. It was like she wrote the story and then was told it wasn’t long enough. So instead of adding depth to the story, she just rehashed the same tired thoughts over and over. If I read one more time how Sloan’s felt Adam was the love of her life and how she knew from the moment they met, it was meant to be, I might have tossed my phone out the window. Or from Ansley how she loved Jack and wanted to tell the girls he was their father but they just couldn’t ..... once was fine. Twice even. But over and over and over was just too much. The other big thing that bothered me was this: I am a Southern lady. We don’t throw name brands around like the breeze blows through the magnolias out back. If a woman starts brand dropping where I live, she’s a fake. And annoying. I don’t care what brand of lamps or carpet or shoes each person has on. Its overly pretentious in my opinion. Now all that being said, the basic storyline was good. It had some merit. Just felt like the author was trying to crank out more words.
The Secret to Southern Charm is the second book in Harvey's Peachtree Bluff series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It picks right up where she left off in Slightly South of Simple (aren't these titles the best?) with Ansley and her daughters Caroline, Sloan, and Emerson. Grammy is there too, as well as the kids, the estranged husband, the old flame, and all of the loving members of the community. While the first book focused mostly on Caroline, this book moves over to Sloan and continues with the heartaching drama that ended Slightly South's story. Charm weaves in Emerson as well, and I have a feeling the third installment will add more to her plate than anyone could have imagined. Ansley better gather her strength for this one. In the midst of everyone's stories, Harvey perfectly describes that southern atmosphere (and fantastic design choices) we love to read about and wish we lived in. Gorgeous sunsets, evenings on the porch, and loving neighbors wrap this family up in all the southern charm (see what I did there?). Escape to Peachtree Bluff and spend some time with the gals. Grab some wine while you're at it.
I received an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Things pick up where Slightly South of Simple left off. Sloane is going through a really, really tough time as her husband, who is in the military, is missing in action overseas. It's obviously a nightmare for Sloane; she can barely function let alone take care of her two young boys, but thankfully she can lean on her mom, Ansley, and her two sisters who are also in Peachtree Bluff. Regarding Ansley, she has pushed away the love of her life for various reasons, but one major reason is that it's very complicated. And to complicate matters even further, Ansley's mother, the girls' grandmother, has come to live with them for the time being. There's also Caroline, who is trying to rebuild her marriage, and Emerson, who is still pursuing her acting career, but things also get complicated for her as well. Meanwhile, readers know Ansley's major secret she is hiding from her girls and we can't help but worry what might happen if they find out the truth. Kirsty Woodson Harvey's The Secret to Southern Charm is a fantastic beach read that tugged on my heartstrings. There's romance, family drama, secrets, and life-altering moments that will impact all the women's lives irrevocably. Read the rest of my review here: http://www.confessionsofabookaddict.c...
Note - this is Book 2 in the Peachtree Bluff series. You need to read these books in order to get the most enjoyment out of them.
"This putting on a brave face, carrying on, helping others, being kind and humble and giving, believing with all your heart that the world could be a better place and that maybe you could make it that way...that was Southern charm."
The second book in the Peachtree Bluff trilogy takes us back to Georgia and the family that we loved from book 1 - Ansley, the mom, and her three daughters - Caroline, Sloane and Emerson. Book 1 centered on Caroline's life and book 2 centers on Sloane but both books are about the issues facing a family and the love and unbreakable bond between the family members.
This is a fantastic book by a wonderful author who always writes believable characters. I live in the South and I know these people in my day to day life and I was so happy to have them back for book 2 and can't wait to read about them again in book 3. Once you get to know the family, you'll laugh with them and cry a few tears and think about them long after you read the last page.
I received an advance review copy of this book from the Great Thought's Ninja Review Team. All opinions are my own.
The Secret to Southern Charm is book 2 in the Peachtree Bluff series. I liked the first book, Slightly South of Simple, but absolutely adored book 2! I could picture myself with all these wonderful women, laughing, crying and drinking sweet tea. The Secret to Southern Charm is a heartwarming story of hope and second chances. I hope Kristy Woodson Harvey is hard at work on book #3 because I cannot wait to read more of this amazing series!
Fans of "GritLit" (books set in the South) may have already heard about Harvey's wonderful novels. This one is her best yet. It follows Sloane, whose husband is missing in action, as she struggles to raise her young sons with the help of her mother and two sisters. Family drama, long buried secrets and big dreams abound in this novel with so much heart.
A fast-paced story of all the ups & downs of family life. Now that I'm all caught up with Ansley, Caroline, Sloane & Emerson, I'll be able to enjoy the Peachtree Bluff Christmas novel coming out in a few months!
I read this book in one sitting - five hours - and I regret nothing.
Reading the first book in this series, Slightly South of Simple, I finished the day before so I could dive into this one immediately.
Sloane is the sister I've grown attached to. I felt as though I could feel her heartbreak and sadness, going day after day not knowing if her husband was still alive. As a military mom, I understand the constant worry about the safety of our soldiers, but I still attest, being a military wife is not for the weak.
I love how Kristy drew the picture of Adam and Sloane, how they came to be, using the letters he wrote to her. It is the kind of love story everyone dreams about.
This book is one you will not want to put down until you are finished. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will feel as though you were there all along, loving this family as much as they love one another.
I'M FINALLY DONE! I never thought this day would come, but I'm free. FREEEEEEEE.
I loathed this book. In part because it may be the most boring book I have ever read. It was at least 200 pages too long. 200 extra pages of the two POV characters repeating the same thoughts over and over and over. And speaking of the POV characters, Sloane and Ansley - just wow. If their men didn't have different names, I honestly couldn't have told them apart. Both were petty, immature and just plain unlikable. There were several times I couldn't follow their thought processes. There were several times I legitimately cringed at the self-centered, petty and sometimes just plain cruel thoughts they had. I know everyone has negative thoughts, but I feel like there are limits. Ansley is 50 and change, not 15. Not to mention - she's the one who tossed Jack aside many, many times. The constant bashing of Georgia was too much for me. And then there was Sloane who had similarly awful thoughts about her own sisters - because let's face it, no one could possibly be having it harder than Sloane! Note the sarcasm.
And then there were the little added opinions that I just can't get behind. Namely the line that two people ruin a marriage. Now, okay, that sounds right on the surface. BUT (yes the caps are necessary) this was in relation to Caroline's husband cheating on her (with a supermodel, a fact we heard about every time the cheating came up *eye roll*). I'm sorry, but I'm not about to get behind the woman (or man, but let's be real, this kind of thinking almost always blames the woman) is to blame for their spouse cheating. I don't care if she "let herself go" or whatever excuse people throw out there. HE MADE A CHOICE TO BREAK HIS VOWS - THE END. If she was so awful and all that jazz, he could leave her. Sex isn't a necessity to live. Life may not be as pleasant without it, but he's not going to die. There is no excuse. Now if she wants to forgive him, I'm cool with that. But let's not go casting blame on her unless she unzipped his pants and shoved his ding dong into another woman's va-jim-jam.
I have a whole other list of complaints, but honestly I'd like to end this. I'm sick of this book. If this is "the next major voice in Southern fiction", I think I'll steer clear until the next generation comes of age.

I just loved this! I was so happy to return to Peachtree Bluff on this cold New York week! I enjoyed Slightly South of Simple very much earlier this year but The Secret to Southern Charm blew me away! At the end of SSoS, Sloane gets some bad news about her husband who is stationed away on active military duty - he’s gone missing. The first book alternates perspectives from Mom Ansley and eldest daughter, Caroline and this one switches to Ansley and Sloane. Learning the love story behind Adam and Sloane’s relationship juxtaposed to Sloane praying for Adam will pull at your heartstrings and you will be pulling for the Murphy girls once again. My only complaint is that I’m done and don’t want to wait any longer for Emerson’s story!
Thank you to Gallery Books and The Great Thoughts’ Ninja Review Team for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
the secret to southern charm By Kristy Woodson Harvey
What it's all about...
This book is the second book in this author’s Peachtree Bluff Series. It literally takes up where slightly south of simple stops. Ansley...still has her three daughters, their children and all of their issues living with her. In this book even more family drama has been added. The nature of Ansley’s first two daughters conception is always just about to be revealed but Ansley never quite manages to tell them the truth. Her relationship with almost boyfriend Jack is in jeopardy even though he lives just next door. Her mother is living with her, too, due to health issues. Thank goodness for big houses, houses down the street and guest houses. I enjoyed this book but I would have been lost without reading the first book. These books are so connected that their true enjoyment would be lost without each other. And be prepared because this book ends in such a manner that you know another book has to be in the works.
Why I wanted to read it...
I wanted to read this book because I really enjoyed the first book and this one just began right where the first one stopped. It’s almost difficult to discuss this book without discussing the first book because they are so connected.
What made me truly enjoy this book...
I loved all of these characters for a myriad of different reasons. Ansley and her daughters Caroline, Sloane and Emerson were entwined in each other’s lives and dramas. There were beautiful as well as sad scenes in this book. While reading it I felt as though I was learning some valuable life lessons. But also while reading it I questioned some of this books issues...everyone but Caroline and Sloane seemed to have some idea of who their sperm donor was...and the way they were conceived just seemed unlikely to me...you will have to read both books and see if you agree with me about this. Seriously!
Why you should read it, too...
If you love lovely Southern books that take place in quaint beachy towns and that have lots of lovely characters mixed in with a few irritating characters...this is a series that will provide you with delicious enjoyment. I know I shall be waiting for the next book...
I received an advance reader’s copy of this book from the publisher through Edelweiss and Amazon. It was my choice to read it and review it.
My Review of “The Secret to Southern Charm” by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Kudos to Author Kristy Woodson Harvey, author of “The Secret to Southern Charm”, the sequel to “Simply South of Simple” for writing such a captivating, heartwarming, emotional, intriguing and enjoyable novel. I spent the weekend having a Kristy Woodson Harvey Marathon,, because I wanted to read both books, and enjoyed them. I loved both books and do want “MORE” as soon as possible. I think this novel can be read as a stand alone, however, I enjoyed the colorful cast of characters and became involved in the family drama and dynamics. The genres for this novel are Fiction and Women’s Fiction. The timeline for the story is mostly in the present, but going to the past only when it pertains to the characters or events in the story. The story takes place mostly in the southern town of Peachtree Bluff.
Kristy Woodson Harvey has written about several generations of mothers, daughters, and sisters, and now there is a new generation,as the grandmother comes back to the home. Ansley owns the house, her daughters, their children and her ailing mom. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated, perhaps due to the circumstances. The daughters,(sisters) each have their own problems, and there are some dark secrets that exist in the family setting, that could possibly change the course of events in the story.
The theme in this story seems to deal with second chances. Do people deserve a second chance? Can things be forgiven? Do you move on, or work at it? I love the way the author discusses the importance of family, support, love, and hope. I would highly recommend this charming, delightful, and intense family drama for readers that enjoy Women’s Fiction. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
Love the cover of this book. I won this from Romance of Reading years ago and just getting to it. So many other books I wanted to read first.
This is the 2nd book of the series by her. I gave 4 stars to her first one but only giving 3 stars to this one. Even though I read the first one a while back, I remembered all the characters well. All in all, it was a good read and plot, but a sad one in many ways. Not as good as her first one in my opinion.
I liked all of the sisters, Caroline, Sloane and Emerson and their mother Ansley (must be a southern name) and their lives all living in Peachtree Bluff, GA and their grandmother who was living in the big house with Ansley.
I have the 3rd book also and will be reading that one eventually and will probably read her future ones in this series coming up too just to see how it all pans out.
I have an early copy of the fourth book in this series and decided I should read the other three first. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and read the second one first. I’m going to give it four stars because I now know that any negative thoughts I had as I read it were caused by the fact that I hadn’t read the first one! I’m reading the first one now and can already see the difference. 😘
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I fell in love with the first book in the series. I was pleasantly surprised that this second book is even better. All of these characters are so relatable and loveable. This story puts a spotlight on Sloane and her marriage. We also see this family come together and support one another through heartbreak and fears. We see the strength and the resilience of all these women. Unputdownable!
