Alicia Stone's husband, Octavius, a celebrated naval hero, has died. In recent years, Alicia had to endure the humiliation of her husband having a mistress and fathering a child with her. His love for the other woman was so intense that he actually brought them into his home. While this shoddy behavior should have shocked the nation, the Admiral was so revered, that he and his mistress were embraced and portrayed as tragic romantic f

Mild spoilers follow - nothing that ruins the book.
First, it sucked for Alicia that she was the unwanted wife, but I loved that her husband and mistress weren't your stereotypical Bad People and had an actual love affair. So, yes, he was a jerk, but not solely because he could be.

I also loved that Alicia was strong and capable and didn't spend the time being all poor me. And Ash was lone-wolf-sexy.

I did feel one of the secondary characters was there to introduce the next book, but he did play a

Her Duke at Daybreak is the first book in Wendy LaCapra's new series, Mythic Dukes. This was a very compelling story and look forward to the next ones in the series.

The Duke of Ashbey is a complex, tortured character, caught in his own world of isolation and madness. He punishes himself for acts of his family heritage and believes that he does not deserve a better life. Then he meets the widow, Alicia Stone, and he can't resist the light and beauty she exudes. Ashbey bargains for just three nigh

Having waited two years for a new book from Wendy LaCapra, I admit that both my anticipation and expectations for Her Duke at Daybreak were pretty high. The fact that I've already read the book twice, fallen in love with these characters and their story the first go-around then even more deeply the second time clearly illustrates that I shouldn't have worried about having those expectations met.

One of the things I most enjoy about LaCapra's writing is the depth she gives her characters. Ashbey a

Yet another writer with a huge following who cannot write a decent historical romance. By decent, I mean a romance with a tiny smidgin of believability about them, enough to facilitate the nice fantasy that could have emanated from them. LaCapra's yarn is burdened by LaCapra's writing. The writing of an eager, enthusiastic student of writing. The repetitious prolixity is of the kind that promises to deliver dark, hurt, complex characters and instead it delivers your usual 21st cartoons in costum ...more

I thought Her Duke at Daybreak was a pretty good read. After everything was said and done, I found it more interesting to find out that it was kind of inspired by true events. However, the real lives that inspire this story didn't have a happy ending. However, in Her Duke at Daybreak both parties had a happy ending. The storyline was changed a little to give Lady Stone and the Countess happy endings. So, I would encourage all to read the author's notes after reading the

My first story by Wendy LaCapra, which made me want to read her longer work (this is a novella, a RITA nominee). The writing is lush and emotion-packed, but there wasn't really enough plot here to balance and hold up the onslaught of feeling.

The "Mythic Dukes" series focus on three former schoolmates, each of whom took on a Greek myth sobriquet when they were boys. The hero here, the Duke of Ashbey is "Hades" (ha, get it, "Ash"?!) The story is loose take on the Hades/Persephone story, but it's

Review: Duke at Daybreak is a delicious, sexy, steamy historical romance! I am still swooning from how hot this book was! I look, I keep using exclamation points!

Lady Stone's unfaithful husband, Octavius, has died leaving a lot of pomp and circumstance and a mistress behind. The pomp and circumstance is due to Octavius' post with the British Navy. He died a decorated and honored hero. The mistress was a well-known secret and with a c

With Her Duke at Daybreak, the first book in Wendy LaCapra's new series Mythic Dukes, she breaks her sabbatical of two years and I for one am so glad she did. She no longer surprises me because by now I know that I'll be reading some of the best prose out there these days, but she yet again managed to delight me.

I said once and it is worth repeating. Books can impress one with a good plot, great dialogue, touching romance and so on. But when a book hits all of those and has a swoon worthy prose,

Her Duke at Daybreak is a steamy romance but it is so much more. It is the joining of two lost souls.

Lady Stone is the widow of an unfaithful hero. She has lived in the shadow of her husband's mistress and daughter. Now that her husband has died, she attends the funeral in disguise. While there she locks eyes on a man, the Duke of Ashbey, and is stuck by his compassion.

The Duke of Ashbey is a lonely soul. He is plagued by the death of his wife and father. He is also viewed as mad because his f

I love a good story of two people who find each other and are able to heal the damage of the past. For Alicia Stone, new widow she is forced to face the fact that her famous Admiral husband left everything to his mistress and illegitimate daughter. All his wife had left were his aging aunt and his debts.
For Ash, the Duke of Ashbey, he is living an empty life, his father was an accused murderer and his wife set fire to their castle killing herself and his father. He lives alone in one room in his

This was my first book from Wendy LaCapra and I loved it! It was everything I love in a historical romance. Sort of a beauty and the beast type story. He's a grumpy recluse. She's an innocent widow. When a friend tells the duke about this angelic woman, he can't believe such a creature exists. He doesn't trust women and prefers to keep things on a physical level. Thank his crazy dead wife for that! He meets Alicia and is captivated, but goes against his better judgement (and his friend's warning ...more

This was so good; sexy, romantic with our hero the Duke of Ashbey"Ash" being a dark, unhappy man who will never change. Ash becomes obsessed with the widow Alicia Stone on just the angelic description his friend gives him. Ash doesn't believe such a lady exist and he sets out to meet her, After meeting her, he knows he must have her in his bed and he pays off her deceased husband's debts and then negotiates a discreet 3 day affair. When looking for a juicy book to read I came upon the blurb for this book. I was super excited as it sounded deliciously dark but then I looked at the cover of the book I felt like i was about to read a novel my mother had forbid me to read when I was in school. But no matter how I felt about the cover of the book. I still went in with an open mind.
When Ash sees Alicia for the first time he knows he must have her. Without even speaking to her, she makes him feel for the first time in years. Ali

This is the first book I have read by Wendy LaCapra and I truly loved it. This is a story of too injured souls who are fated to meet. Ash, the Duke of Ashby has been a tortured since his wife set fire to his estate and both her and Ash’s father perish. He is haunted because he believes madness runs in his family and since the fire, he has lost all human feeling for others. Lady Alecia Stone has just lost her husband, although she had lost him emotionally years ago to his mistress, who had produc ...more

Just OK

I have been reading a lot of Victorian romances lately, and this one just did not fill me with “ that romantic feeling”. I am intrigued by the fact, after reading the book, that it is based on some historical figures. I like the plot and the characters. But what I really did not like was the way the author “glossed” over the sex scenes by throwing in trite euphemisms of soul changing connection when she should have spent a bit more time on actual description. I was promised 3 nights of de

Her Duke At Daybreak by Wendy LaCapra is a fantastic historical romance. Ms LaCapra has delivered a well-written book and furnished it with outstanding characters. Alicia is a wife ignored and now a widow, Ashbey is the son of a mad, murdering duke. Their story is touching. Ms LaCapra has loaded this book with drama, a bit of angst (but not an overdose), a sprinkle of humor and sizzle. I was glued to this book from start to finish, it's just that good. I enjoyed reading Her Duke At Daybreak and ...more

I received a review copy of this book.

This book goes deep into the emotions and angst felt by both the hero and heroine. Ashbey, the hero, has shut himself off emotionally. Alicia, the heroine, has never felt true passion.

Ashbey can’t resist propositioning her and Alicia agrees.

This is a steamy romance, where Iove grows unexpectedly between the couple and they struggle with these feelings as a result of their past experience.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and thought the author did a good job w

The Duke of Ashbey is whispered behind his back of murdering his first wife and madness inherited from his father. The burned remains of the tower to his castle is testament to that. Until he sees a woman so pure of face that she becomes his obsession with the want of her. He will find a way to make the widow Alicia Stone his mistress!

Alicia Stone is a woman forgotten before even becoming a widow. Her husband ignored her and was more a husband to his mistress and father to his illegitimate daugh

The Duke of Ashbey has a reputation, he has to live with his past and there’s nothing he can do to change it. He isn’t interested in a relationship, thinking he’ll bring bad luck to the woman. Ash leads a solitary life, but that changes when he meets Alicia. She’s a widow with a scandalous family history. She was left with nothing while her husband’s money went to his mistress and the child he had with her. Alicia’s marriage was far from happy and she never wants to get involved with an arrogant ...more

Ash The Duke of Ashby , lost his father and his wife in a fire at their castle. He now believes no one could love him , that he's evil and belongs in hell, because of things his wife said to him .
