This book was one of those perfect weekend reading experiences for me. This was fun, light and a really enjoyable story.
Jamie has spent her whole life surrounded by cars and their engines so it was only natural that she would become a mechanic like her father. From a very young age she would help out in her dad’s garage business and there isn’t anything she doesn’t know about the cars and the people that drive them in her town.
Sadly, due to some bad personal decisions, Jamie’s dad recently had to close down his business and this has left her out of work for a while. Despite applying for several positions in the surrounding towns, she keeps getting disregarded for the roles. In this male dominated industry, a female mechanic seems just too hard to comprehend.
When Jamie gets news that her dad’s old garage has been re-opened and looking to employ a mechanic, she jumps at the chance to get immersed back into the place she feels most at home in. She never counted on Dexter Ryne though, the smoking hot guy who could be her potential boss. And boy, like all the others, he has very old views on a female working in his garage like - woman don’t belong under the bonnet of a car, maybe bent over the hood with a man behind her…. you get my drift?
'Whether or not Dexter Ryne believed I was good enough to be a mechanic in his garage was nothing more than his opinion, and since opinions were usually closer to assholes than anything else, I didn't care what he thought.'
However, Dex completely underestimated Jamie and I’m not just talking about her ability as a mechanic. She does not take shit from anyone and happily dishes out as good as she gets. Dex is regretting his lapse in judgement he had the day he agreed to give her a job trial. She definitely knows her stuff but it’s the attraction he has to her that bothers him the most, it is a huge distraction.
'I was attracted to her beyond belief. There wasn't a time I glanced over at her working that her red lips or blue eyes didn't make me think things I had no place thinking.'
Dex is not alone in his attraction though, Jamie is feeling it too. These two dance around each other, pushing buttons, riling each other up every opportunity they get and to be fair, Dex is very up front about his attraction to her. They know they shouldn’t do it but they just can’t fight it anymore even if crossing that line might just bring more complications to their working relationship.
This was a fantastic read from Emma Hart.
