By Heart is an illustrated exploration of the Small Catechism. It is suitable for group discussion, an adult study or personal enrichment. This guide will generate meaningful conversations about the biblical and historical context of the Small Catechism, its link to the church’s faith, and its connection to Luther’s life and your life today. There is an accompanying facilitator guide and DVD that highlight the book for use in a 7-session course for longtime Lutherans and those new to the faith, as well.
I read this book with a small group of people who have come to Lutheranism from varied backgrounds. Whether you're a "cradle" Lutheran, a new Lutheran, or even a Christian with no ties to Lutheranism, I believe this beautifully illustrated book is a valuable resource for understanding the theology and history behind Martin Luther's words. When Luther wrote the Small Catechism in 1529, he was addressing the general ignorance of basic and essential teachings of Christianity. In reviewing the contents of the Small Catechism, the writers of "By Heart" help us see Luther's goal is to guide regular people to see how God's work in Christ is intended to penetrate in to the depths of our hearts. Luther saw that the gospel was far removed from the everyday experience of the people of his time. Faith is given "by heart" when God's word comes to real people in a way that is integral to ordinary life. Luther gave us the tools to live in Christian community.
A nice attempt to explain the Small Catechism in its historical and theological context. The best feature is probably the very interesting artwork and photographs and illustrations included with the text. The text itself reads like something written by committee. Pretty bland, with some weird tonal shifts here and there. Overall, I found it pretty interesting, but not something I would just pick up and read.
This is a very helpful text. For modern laity, it opens up the Small Catechism in an easily understood, often exciting way. For pastors, it can inform your preaching and teaching. It is a wonderful resource. The team of authors/scholars did a great job. I truly think it a gift to the universal Church. (When I saw a former professor of mine, Dr. Kirsi. Stjerna, was part of this project, I fully expected it to be both scholarly, engaging and applicable to life - just like her teaching.)
Our congregation used By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism for a six-week Bible study, but this book would be an excellent addition to any home library. The contributing authors tie in historical information about the Reformation, Martin and Katie Luther, and their contemporary theologians. The book also includes relevant passages from Luther’s other writings, plus color photographs of artwork and historical locations.
I am a Lutheran pastor and used this as background for a combined youth-adult Sunday morning class on Luther's Small Catechism. The authors provide wonderful context the theological commentary on Luther's Small Catechism, which, in my humble opinion, is the best of all of his writings. The art and photos in the book, and its layout, make it a delight to read.
Excellent overview and context of Martin Luther's basic positions on the sacraments, prayers, commandments, and other issues that may be viewed differently between denominations. It contains the small catechism both in pieces throughout the book and in its entirety in the appendix.
Excellent if like me raised a Methodist, and I changed to the Lutheran religion when I married. Notable differences. I highly recommend this book as a study
