In the Highlands, the winters are as enduring as the shadows cast by an ever-distant sun. According to myth, it has been this way ever since the Sky Queen and the All-Father, the two beings who created the world, fell out of love. It is said, only a thread remains between them, and when that thread breaks, life will not survive.

Superbly captures the feel of what a true epic should be.
From the opening lines to the last words in the novel, "The Warmaiden of Arna" captured my attention and held me in thrall. I could see every scene - idyllic or fraught with tension - smell every scent, taste every taste, and feel the snow ice-cold beneath my fingers.

I first came across this thinking it would be just another fantasy novel (start of a series I guess), and picked it up for flight reading. I keeping being blown away - this is so much more than your basic fantasy. You get a sense that something much bigger is going on, and it has the thematic feel of an epic with a deep mythology.

Epic fantasy lives and dies by the level of investment both the author and the reader have in the world being built. In this, Warmaiden succeeds admirably. The world is vibrant and alive, with a mythology all its own. The characters are both believable and relatable. A compelling adventure in its own right, the book sets the stage well for even greater adventures to come. I look forward to the second volume in the series, and the subsequent volumes yet to come.
