I found this quite fascinating, humbling, erudite. Treat's knowledge of Japan's literary and social history is thorough and he weaves a compelling tale focusing on a few representatives of the primary modern eras. Japan lends itself well to a look at where human civilization may be heading and it's not a terribly cheery view. Treat does not shy away from the environmental degradation, heating planet, nuclear disaster (3/11 Fukushima) in speculating that human life on earth may be winding down. ...more
