Zoey the chicken needs a vacation! Zoey knows you don’t need to go to the shore to have the perfect beach day...but you do need a great imagination and a treasure map! Will Zoey lead her barnyard pals to buried treasure? Chicken on Vacation is a Level One I Can Read, which means it's perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences. Whether shared at home or in a classroom, the short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts of Level One books support success for children eager to start reading on their own. From the author-illustrator duo that brought you the hilarious Chicken in Space, Chicken in School , and Chicken in Mittens , a Level One I Can Read that School Library Journal calls “a fun book that is perfect for budding readers.”

What a great story! Zoey needs a vacation and she's going to the beach. She's taking Sam, the pig with her and Sam has invited Pip, the mouse to come along too. This vacation is more like an adventure, as Zoey has quite the imagination as the three of them head off to the beach. You might just think they are building sand castles, swimming in the water, playing in a field and climbing on a tractor but to a few of them, they are actually searching for treasure, running from a crab, swimming in an ocean and discovering a shipwreck. What a fun-filled day for these three friends. But, the day is not finished until they discover the three friends find the treasure.
First sentence: Zoey burst into the barn. "Pack your hat, Sam!" she said. "We're going on a beach vacation!"
Premise/plot: Chicken on Vacation is an I Can Read level one early reader starring one of my favorite characters. Last year I reviewed three books starring Zoey the chicken: Chicken in School, Chicken in Space, and Chicken in Mittens. (Chicken in Mittens and Chicken on Vacation are 2018 Cybils eligible.) In this book, Zoey and Sam are heading to the beach. (OR are they?!?!)
My thoughts: I really ADORE Zoey. I do. I never thought that one of my favorite sub-sub-genres of picture books would be CHICKEN BOOKS. But there are some great books out there. I would recommend the whole series.
PreS-Gr 1—Zoey the chicken is back in another diminutive tale for new readers. Zoey invites her friends, Sam the pig and Pip the mouse, on a beach vacation. As they march to their destination, Zoey encourages them to look at the ocean view and sandy beach, but all Pip sees is a pond and some dirt. No matter, soon Sam is happily swimming in the mud and even Pip is content splashing in the pond. The outing wouldn't be complete without a splendid adventure, and when Pip finds a piece of paper, Zoey declares it to be a treasure map. The hunt is on and the three friends proceed to encounter ordinary objects that Zoey's keen imagination turns into something grand. A tractor is now a lookout tower and an old fence is transformed into a shipwreck. Luckily for all involved, the buried treasure turns out to be a picnic pie for all to enjoy. Zoey's enthusiasm and imagination are infectious and young readers will relate to the action in the book. Short sentences and colorful illustrations by Kober will aid in comprehension. VERDICT: A solid addition for emerging readers, especially for fans of Chicken in Mittens.
Zoey is a chicken with an overactive imagination as she takes two of her friends down to the local pond which she claims is the ocean, the dirt is beach, the tractor is lookout tower, etc. I do like her optimism and creativity. And the ending sets up for a possible sequel.
This book is categorized as a beginning reader level one which in this series means short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own. However, not sure how many beginning readers know the words - shipwreck, treasure, kingdom - but I may be wrong.
My Review: I am new to the Chicken books but it looks like there are quite a few. It maybe would have been helpful to start with a book that introduces the characters but it isn't necessary. This is a great book for this summer where so many of us are having to vacation near home. It sparks a bit of imagination and creates a fun adventure from nothing. Young readers will have a blast creating their own mini vacations at home. This was a great level one book, simple words and a lot of repetition, bold text and great illustrations.
Zoey the Chicken is ready to go on vacation. With a little imagination, she, Sam, and Pip are off to the beach and then go on a treasure hunt.
Zoey is nothing if not imaginative. I love that her imagination seems like something totally plausible for a child to come up with. Animal lovers, humor fans, and kids with great imaginations should love Zoey's trip to the "beach."
Pip is a party pooper. Sam is always focused on lunch. The surprise at the end is that he isn’t lunch. No fried chicken, either. Read to me by Mom and Dad.
