"My name is Sam. Alice, the love of my life, lives 170 miles away, and she's stopped answering the phone. So, I'm leaving the safety of my home to see if she is OK.
A simple journey. Except the roads are abandoned, the cities are quarantined and London is in a state of evacuation.
I have a plan. Not only do I have a plan, but I've seen enough apocalypse films to prepare. I can be the hero Alice needs. I have to be...
170 miles, over 50 million potential zombies, and Alice won’t pick up the phone... oh yeah, the dead have started walking.
Just another day in England."

Among The Dead follows the young, self-proclaimed hero Sam as he leaves his family and the quarantined safety of his city: Bristol. He is searching for the love of his life, Alice, who he lost contact with. He doesn’t even know if she is alive but he has to believe everything will be fine.
The world was barely ending, yet it was already falling apart. The citizens of England are under a martial law, the Government acted like nothing was wrong, violence spread among the cities, and the dead were walking.
Sam will be faced with decisions he could never be prepared for; he will face questions of his own morality. Worst of all, Sam will realise he isn’t the hero of the books and video-games he thought he was. This is the real world. There are monsters walking the streets; living and dead.

Authors Note: This book series will have a lot of content which could be considered "distressing" to some. It will use tropes associated with apocalypse fiction, including violence and abuse on physical and mental level. This will not be the case for every book but, as a series in general, it deals with some very dark themes. Please be aware of this before buying it.
Ryan Colley always enjoyed reading fictional worlds, but creating his own is his passion. In school, a teacher told him to pursue writing after reading a short story he wrote for homework and, from that day, he never stopped. He doesn’t know where his love of zombies comes from, but it just happened, and it is his life.
Things changed, and life moved on, but even while graduating from his Bachelor's and Master's in Psychology, he wrote stories every day. Writing is his passion, and everything else he does is to pursue that passion. Ryan loves hearing from his readers and encourages you to let him know what you think!
So the author had asked if I would review this book months ago. I never got around to it, and when I saw it on Kindle Unlimited, I jumped at the chance to read and review it. I enjoy a good zombie story, but this one was just okay for me. Our main character is an average guy with nothing extraordinary, which is always great. I always like to see the everyday people in the story do normal things instead of having this extensive background that you scratch your head going, okay we know they will survive. Our main character is determined to travel to his girlfriend's home to see if she is okay, as she is not answering her phone. This is Sam's journey to Alice, it is not going to be an easy trip which we don't expect it to be, but at the same time, I want to know what caused the zombies? I am always big on why this happened, and this was not touched, which may be brought up in the next book. I loved the England setting and how the author described how the zombies were not all the same. Just felt the story lacked something for me, and I could not put my finger on it. We were left with a cliffhanger, and I am interested to see if Alice is still alive in book two.
I love finding new authors.this is one in a genre I wouldn't normally read but definitely one of whom i can't wait for the next book.if life didn't interrupt my reading this would have been read in one sitting as I didn't want to put it down..I did manage to fit it into two sittings though.I have tried other books in this genre before but always got bored before too long....not this time.great plot kept me wanting to know what happened next......and now I am looking forward to knowing more in the next book.I would recommend this book even if this isn't your usual genre.
Among the Dead: Part One: Shadow of Death is a thrilling and darkly immersive horror novel that combines apocalyptic tension, heart-pounding suspense, and deeply human stakes. Ryan Colley masterfully crafts a world teetering on chaos, filled with danger at every turn, while exploring love, morality, and the limits of survival. Fans of zombie fiction, apocalyptic thrillers, and intense, character-driven horror will be captivated, horrified, and unable to put this story down.
An average guy, a girlfriend, and the Apocalypse, what more could you ask for? Well traveling across the land to reunite. A land called England, family, new friends, and maybe a few bad guys added in for spice. Following Sam’s adventure to find a safe place, and love. Pick up a weapon here, a friend there, and move along. It is an exciting journey with a writer who can spin the tale.
As zombie apocalypse books goes this one in top form. It has all the rules (Tao of Sam). The deceitful British Army General, the lost girlfriend and the buddy met on the road. It is certainly well worth the read and I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series..good job Ryan Colley
Ryan Colley has done it the right way. Great Britain has fallen to the dead, can Sam find his true love in the horror of it all? Friends and family are always on his mind as he travels across the country. Will he be able to keep His sanity?
I like zombie books (I know,I know) but they have to be engaging, lots of action and fast paced. For me this book is ridiculous, silly main character, silly story line.
