In the aftermath of a nuclear war, a mother and her three-year-old daughter struggle to survive...and the mother struggles with whether survival is even worth the effort, as the two of them appear to be the last ones standing.

Wharton's story uses a journal-entry format, and though the words themselves are spare, they still manage to convey despair and isolation, compounded by physical and mental deterioration.

Short story with a powerful punch.
