Battle Scars was unfortunaly a bit of a miss for me. There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with it. I just had a hard time feeling any connection to the characters. I liked them well enough but it was difficult for me to be interested enough to keep going. I started and stopped a few times but was interested *enough* to know how it ended. But even that kind of left me underwhelmed. The synopsis describes it as a “grown up love story” which is definately is but I guess I just need a bit more a ...more

Having never read a Jane Harvey-Berrick novel before, I went in with no expectations other than knowing I had to read Battle Scars after reading the blurb.

“Our relationship had been born from the most desperate of situations, warmed by friendship and respect, heightened by our physical attraction, and tempered with the threat of losing it all in an explosion of dust and violence.”

We often see the heartache those left behind face when a loved one is deployed, but what happens when t

This was a really interesting story and you could tell the author had put a lot of research into fine tuning all of the details around working in a war zone.

MJ is a journalist for the New York Times and often her job can lead her into dangerous places, life threatening at times too. She is on assignment covering a story on the plight of the people in a war zone when she finds herself needing to be rescued by the marines she is in camp with.

Sergeant Jack Connor is absolutely livid when he has to

‘They’ve left behind their families, their community leaders, everything they’ve known, and all they carry with them is their fear and anger.’

There is absolutely no question that Jane Harvey-Berrick writes the most detailed and researched military romances; we never question that this Author knows exactly what she’s writing about. There is also no question that this type romance is very close to her heart and that she puts her soul into her writing it. Battle Scars is an in-depth and topical sna

I've been totally living in this story about a marine and a journalist. The Education of Sebastian and its sequel, The Education of Caroline, also by this author are among my top favourite stories ever, so it was a real treat to return to that, even though the story was totally new. I especially enjoyed the cameo of Seb and Caroline in this.

As well as the belly warming romance, I loved the social commentary in this as we see the world and its conflicts through Maggie's journalist's eyes, de

Beautifully intense and oh-so-functional military romance

This is a surprising book with a natural, intense and functional love story, and some hard-hitting elements thrown in to make it a raw and real read. A well-written and emotional military story, this is a quick read that leaves an impact, and I really enjoyed it.

MJ Buckman is a journalist who visits the most dangerous places in the world in order to bring real-life stories to the people at home. Her latest story sees her in Afghanistan, a

Battle Scars is a relatively light and easy read, while still dealing with some very real, and at times heartbreaking, realities.

MJ Buckman and Jackson Connor couldn't have gotten off to a rougher, tougher, start if they had tried. While in Afghanistan working on an article for the New York Times, MJ comes under fire and has to be rescued by the Marine Corps unit she is "stationed" with, led by Jackson. Not appreciating having to put his men's lives in danger to save a reporter, let's just say

An amazing depiction of the world we live in -- with a reality check via a hard and strong message. The romance is beautifully portrayed -- while still maintaining the contrasts and conflicts. Two very strong main characters and a terrific secondary cast. The opposites attract vibe is a winning addition for the strong Marine and the NYT journalist.

A riveting military story that is fast-paced and intense. It brings with it authenticity and rawness that makes for a dynamic read.

This is the first book I've read by Jane Harvey-Berrick and I enjoyed it. It's a sweet story of finding an unexpected connection amidst the chaos of war.

Jackson or 'Sarge' is a great character. He's strong, loyal, protective and honourable but he's tortured. He's quite a closed book but the glimpses we get when he opens up are touching. MJ is a strong, ambitious woman who knows what she wants and aims high. When her best intentions bring her face to face with a peeved Sergeant, her hackles rise

I fell completely and irrevocably in love with Jane's fantastic writing since reading The Education of Sebastian/The Education of Caroline. I knew then that I've discovered a new unicorn author for me. She is versatile and always comes up with new refreshing and unique ideas. What I particularly love about her books is that her stories are realistic and accurate due to the extensive research she does before writing a story. Her characters feel real to me - they are authentic and I can easily con ...more
I have been reading for a long time and I always look forward to finding new authors; I have found an author that I plan to read more of with Ms. Harvey-Berrick.

Now that I am older, I like to read books where the characters are around my age and I can relate to them. In Battle Scars, I could relate to Jackson, my husband is retired Air Force, so I understand the feelings and concerns that both Jack and MJ have with deployments.

I highly recommend this book and the author.

”The invisible injuries are the ones that are hardest to heal.”

I have a weakness for military romances, maybe it’s the military wife in me, but they are my KRYPTONITE. My ache. My addiction. My all.

A military romance threaded with an in-depth dive into a war zone, Battle Scars bares itself intimately with intrinsic detail and unparalleled devotion felt every step of the way. Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick is UNIQUE—UNFLINCHING—as it tackles serious subjects along with everlasting love.

I love all kinds of romantic stories; dramatic, dark, over-the-top, you name it. But every once in a while, I want a ‘normal’ story without any extras… Just a realistic story about two people falling in love and trying to make it work. That’s what Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick is for me. I love the story of MJ and Jackson.

MJ, a journalist for the New York Times finds herself in a terrifying situation during an interview and is saved by a group of Marines, led by Sergeant Jackson Connor.

Once back in the safety of the military base, MJ gets an earful from a very pissed off Jackson and not being a shrinking violet, MJ gives just as big of an earful right back to him. Flash forward a few months later and Jackson seeks her out at her offices in New York. Neither one is looking for a relationship, just simple co

As a huge fan of Jane Harvey-Berrick and her fabulous writing, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. This amazingly talented and often underrated author writes stories that get under your skin. Her writing is vivid, her characters loveable and the lessons her books contain will stay with you long after you've finished them. Battle Scars was no exception to that. It was an unputdownable and very thought-provoking book that touched many current subjects like the war in the middle East and ...more

I absolutely love a military romance, but what sold me on this one is part of the blurb:

”A grown-up love story about two people who aren’t looking for love, but realize how precious it is when they find it. They don’t play games and there are no stupid misunderstandings, just life standing in their way.”

You know, sometimes I just want a plain old great story with no unnecessary or overly manufactured angst. And, Jane Harvey-Berrick certainly delivered with this one.

Ms. Harvey-Berrick has become one of my favourite, auto-buy authors. She has written some emotional books that have choked me up to the point of tears running down my face. This is not one of them. That’s not to say it isn’t a good book, just one that it didn’t draw me in like many others to the point I feel like I’m there right beside the characters. In this story it felt more like I was an observer from a distance. And because I know and I’ve experienced what she can make me feel, for me, this ...more

Life is too short - must read!

Jane Harvey Berrick comes through and gives us a beautiful love story based on the realities of life between living in the military and life as a civilian. The book introduces us to a very tumultuous and complex scenario - it’s literally an “on the edge of your seat” book of excitement. Knowing that anything can happen at anytime makes this story all the more intriguing and addicting to read. When a story is that involved, there is absolutely no way that you can put

Back in New York, Jackson hunts her down to take her up on buying him a drink, and they embark on a journey of love. And I'll just repost this line... ...more

Book Review - Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick - 5 Mega Swoon Stars

I love a book that is full of raw emotion. That takes you and transports you into the story you are reading. Where you are experiencing what they are going through as though it is your love, your life, your passion that is pouring off the page. Jane Harvey-Berrick is a master at this.

Now it’s not a secret that I adore the Education series. This and many other of Jane’s work reside lovingly on my bookcase, well out of the stick

This book was initially written as a novella and published chapter by chapter, but then we the readers kept demanding more about this story of Maggie and Jack, and the author graciously added until it became a full story.  This was such a lovely book, not just because it's a beautiful love story but because of all the layers of social messages it has.  Maggie is a journalist, and she travels the world working stories about social injustice.  At the moment she met Jack, she was embedded into his ...more
