"Hermann Hesse fasste es in einer begeisterten Rezension aus dem Jahre 1915 zusammen: 'Man gibt sich viel Mühe mit dem Studium dessen, was die Menschen, Völker und Zeiten voneinander trennt. Achten wir je und je auch wieder auf das, was alle Menschen verbindet! Etwas davon sieht uns dann auch aus der Negerplastik an.' Das von ihm besprochene epochemachende Werk Carl Einsteins erschien 1915 und wurde quasi über Nacht wichtiger Bezugspunkt für alle großen Künstler der Zeit. Mit seiner Abhandlung in Kombination mit Bildtafeln war Einstein zwar nicht der Entdecker der sogenannten primitiven Kunst, aber er hat den Blick auf sie nachhaltig verändert, hat 'den Diskurs oder die Gattung ›afrikanische Kunst‹ erst geschaffen' (Klaus H. Carl Einstein (born Karl Einstein, also known by pseudonym Savine Ree Urian) was an influential German Jewish writer, art historian, anarchist and critic. Regarded as one of the first critics to appreciate the development of Cubism, as well as for his work on African art and influence on the European avant-garde, his work combined many strands of both political and aesthetic discourse into his writings, addressing both the developing aesthetic of modern art and the political situation in Europe.

É perfeito. O que mais eu poderia dizer? A edição está excelente. A tradução acerta na mosca. As reproduções fotográficas estão ótimas. E a reflexão de Einstein prova que ou o clássico é primitivo, ou o primitivo é clássico; fetichizar as culturas de alguns povos em detrimento de outras é injustificado até não poder mais.
