The Rejection Series #1

The Hunting Game

Rate this book
I can feel the power of him radiating through to me. He was making his presence known to my wolf and I. He was marking his territory and learning it carefully. I swallowed hard.

When his nose reached the crook of my neck where my pulse beats a low throaty growl rumbled from his chest and then his hand trailed up my arm sending a spark down to my core. No words were spoken. It was just his nose and lips trailing from my neck to my jaw. When he got to my ear he spoke in a low raspy voice.

"You're mine, ma cherie." His accent was prominent as he spoke huskily. He then nipped my earlobe before licking it gently and pulled back.

I noticed that there are 2 entries for this book, (same author, different covers) so I decided to do a quick re-read before updating my review. As with my original review, this comes with a caveat… I believe this author is fresh off of Wattpad, regardless, she’s a new writer, and I used a weighted scale. A rating is literally only a number, and I’m not here to squish anyone’s dreams. But, I’ll leave deets to help determine if this is a read for you.

The Hunting Game has pretty good bones, but it gets sidetracked and congested. We know from the blurb that Patience’s true mate is Kyle, her sis’s (Kailyn) long-term boyfriend. The biggest miss for me is the absence of angsty goodness. When the book starts, we skipped over the four years of Patience watching the two together while holding out on hope. We've skip over her actively feeling pain as they have sex. We’ve skipped over any potential conversations her and Kyle have had. We don’t even know if he formally rejected her. The sis is in the dark, so there’s no real drama there. The parents are supporting/not saying anything about what’s going on. We get Kyle’s POV, and know he’s not been cruel, feels bad, but really thinks he’s doing the right thing. (not abandoning Kailyn) Even Patience seems sad-ish, and in physical pain, but pretty much over the entire rejection. I believe within the first chapter she’s already asking to be in the hunt. If you compare this to the ANGSTFEST of Dallas, there’s no comparison, and I feel like the author missed an opportunity to make this great.

After the couple (Titan & Patience) get together is goes a little wonky. It gets overcrowded with too many POV’s & side plots, and it’s like Oprah is the Moon Goddess… you get a mate…you get a mate…you get a mate. 🤣 Halfway through the sis hijacks a large chunk of the plot with her mate, and to me, that should've been a separate book. Even though we have all this going on, the plot isn’t really moving. Titan and Patience aren’t really developing; the OW ex is hanging tight; Kailyn is cycling through the same conversation/doubts, and Kyle’s just popping up occasionally sad. It picks up again towards the end.

Bottom Line- Not bad, not great. It’s free on KU, and a really quick read. It has a mild/moderate YA feel.

I enjoyed this book with disclaimers :)
The book is a creative spin on werewolves and mates. Werewolves have two types of mates; true and chosen. Shifters who have lost their mates either from rejection or death have the option to enter the mating hunt to attempt to find a new one...Although only the males get to choose, and the females decide if they accept.

It follows Patience who is rejected by her mate Kyle, so she enters the mate hunt and meets Titan. The book is told from several POV's and has several secondary couples. I rated as is because I thought the idea was creative, it was entertaining, and actually kept me up to finish it.

The disclaimers... this was originally on Wattpad and the writing and editing is a bit amateurish, so if you are a stickler for finished products, this might not be for you.

I really wanted to like this book. The premise sounded interesting, but the writing style was amateurish. I couldn’t get past what seemed like high school writing. Maybe I’ll try this author again further down the road.

The Hunting Game
By Leila Vy

Patience is heartbroken when she discovers her fated mate is Kyle, her sister's long-time boyfriend (and Alpha of their pack), and that he's known they were mates but kept her in the dark.

Patience joins in the Hunting Game. It's a chance to find a new mate for those who have been rejected by their fated mate or their mate has passed on. While in the game she's chosen by the alpha of a pack from Paris, France. Kyle is not happy. (Like anyone cares. LOL) Of course there's tons more to the story including lots of action.

As much as I enjoyed this book it needs a serious editing. There are typos, wrong tenses used, and wrong words used A LOT, as well as words in sentences often out of order. All of that really distracted me from the story itself. There was also some wording that made me wonder if either the author was young or English was not their native language.

The book is written in Patience's, Kyle's, Kailah's, and Titus's POV. The angst level is low/medium.

Side Note: This book can be found on Amazon. It's currently available on KU @

cliché and needs work

If you can take a chosen mate, and mark that mate, it is ridiculous that Kyle still trying to go after Patience. And her sister, who he mated in front of everyone, never clues in? When she has werewolf enhanced hearing? What? She runs off every time Kyle insists on speaking to Patience? He’s yelling and growling loudly, yet this is never heard by anyone else, and particularly her? It’s ridiculous writing such. And four years of him, knowing she was his mate, and able to resist the bond that long, then all of a sudden he is incapable of resisting it? It is all so juvenile in writing. Absolutely unbelievable. Should’ve went with no more than four months. And what a crack sister, he’s over here talking about how he does not care about your sister, no longer wants her, wants you, and you are going to leave your sister with that? Patience has no thought to just tell her sister. Why would she want to leave her with someone like that? A man that is pining after someone else? That was thought to be a good idea, to not hurt her sister? Pahlease.
More lending to the writing being very juvenile. Thingy? That’s what she refers to the male anatomy as? I’m sorry I touched your thingy? I nearly closed the book and returned it to Amazon after reading that. Then there’s Titus and his lack of explaining and immediate dismissal of Patience’s inquiry on who the cliche glaring woman is that’s present as soon as they get out the car when they JUST arrived at the pack house. MAJOR EYE-ROLLING HERE. She asked again later same day, gets I don’t wanna talk about it, tells him why not what are you hiding from me, can you repeat he doesn’t wanna talk about it, she size, and then his replies to say how he can never say no to her can he? then he says, I’ll tell you tonight, I promise. Something wrong with his mouth that he can’t explain right now? And she just accepts that?! Ridiculousness. Of course, there’s a cliché run into the same woman not even a couple hours later, who claims to have been his true mate that he rejected. And surprise, surprise, please imagine the absolute sarcasm in my voice, when she ask him again that night, he still don’t wanna talk about it, tries to say he told her he would tell her tonight, and she’s like it is tonight, and he still deflects. Then he just leaves the room, no explanation, as if such is not owed. And his and his rejected mate story was stupid, there’s just no other way to say it, it was stupid.
Patience still had not spoken the words of rejection back to the mate who rejected her, who is supposed to be in love with her sister, yet, she continued to hang on? Even after he mates her? And again goes back to the ridiculousness of four years of knowing he’s her mate and vice versa. Length of time was way too long to be believable.
And when she calls home, why is her sister answering the phone? She’s now the Luna of the pack, with Kyle, the alpha of that pack, why is she answering the phone when Patience calls home to speak to her parents? And more why is Kyle there still talking foolishness? And the sister still doesn’t hear anything?
How is it that Patience was taken, and Titus doesn’t feel anything? They’re fully mated. Just got done talking about how they can feel each other. Huge plothole. This book needs some major editing. Because it also doesn’t make sense that the rejected mate of Titus was still there. 3 to 4 different times she approached Patience, and Patience doesn’t says anything to Titus? Then oh look now the formerly rejected mate plots and gets others to take Patience and gets away with her AND her sister? Who why was she and Micah still in Titus’ territory many day later anyway? Cliche stupid. The mating ceremonial to Alpha and Luna is held months later? That doesn’t even make sense.
Conversation for who are supposed to be adults is very immature and juvenile. This story needs a redo, with maturity and originality added. Skimming and skipping got me to the end.

Written by someone who needs to read a lot more, whether that's because they are a teenager or just not a reader.

There were a huge amount of continuity errors (things like the FMC claiming bond marks were only ceremonial and not magic, but then magic happened around them all the time andwas treated as mundane, with souls connecting, emotions being felt, marks fading if you get another mark, unwilling marks being possible, etc etc).

The grammar was pretty bad. I thought maybe there were translation errors at first but the French was also bad. The dialog was painfully stiff. You know there's a problem when no one uses contractions.

The multiple POVs was really inappropriate for the genre... honestly, I don't care what all those other people are thinking, especially since none of it was relevant. It was all filler that had already been conveyed by their actions.

All of this could have been forgiven if there were compelling characters or an interesting plot. Unfortunately, I honestly couldn't tell you a single thing about the MMC that differentiated him from any of the other male characters. He even assaulted her at one point, and randomly murdered a dude he thought was having a consensual moment with her, so he had no moral high ground (and was basically evil). He smelled nice and that's about it.

The plot just kind of fizzled out.

It's like when kids draw and they do a blue line at the top of the paper because the sky is blue and it's above the house. It's cute, but it's not deep. It takes practice and observation of other artists to make something that evokes what you actually want. You can't just pick out a few names and throw a bunch of werewolf tropes together and hope for the best.

The Hunting Game….Love Triangles and Mate Bonds

Ouch, rejection hurts. It hurts even more when your destined mate chooses another... and that ‘other’ happens to be your sister. Ahhh, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Patience is the name of the rejected mate and her name describes her well. Refusing to hurt her sister she keeps it a secret and suffers the pain of the alpha’s betrayal alone… both emotional and physical. Alpha Kyle has doted on and loved Kailyn for years. Knowing that Patience is his true mate, he chooses sister Kailyn. Ahhh, but that’s easier said than done, especially when that true mate has had enough and begins looking for her own chosen mate.

Alpha Kyle made his choice and has to learn the hard way that choices have consequences. As the saying goes, he wanted his cake and to eat it too…tsk, tsk. Life just doesn’t work out that way. Secrets never stay buried forever, and when they’re exposed there’s always loss, pain and sometimes Aunty Karma makes a visit. Remember Kailyn and Kyle chose each other. What on earth could go wrong when Kailyn bumps into her own true mate? Not everyone can be a winner in a love triangle.

Oh foolish me, I failed to point out that Patience finds her own chosen. That would be Alpha Titus. But what’s up with him? Why is he choosing a mate? Doesn’t he have a destined somewhere?

Enjoy watching it all play out.

I read this book in Wattpad a couple years ago. It was one of the best werewolf stories I have ever read (and I’ve read a lot). I wanted to reread it when I found out it was published so I just had to buy it.

The story is about a werewolf, Patience, who found her mate but is heartbroken to find out that he has already chosen a mate, her sister. To be able to move on and allow her sister to have her happy ending, she joins the annual Hunting game. This is where rejected and werewolves whose mates have died go to have a second chance at having a mate. Here she meets Alpha Titus. From there, it’s a whirlwind of emotions; happiness, betrayal, anger.

I love the fact that it isn’t the usual rejection book where the guy rejects the girl and hurts her repeatedly but when he apologizes all is forgiven. It was such a great idea as well to have the Hunting game. It’s a second chance for those who were rejected or their mate died.

Ok, this book was a bit all over the place.
There were several character POVs, most of which I don't think were necessary. Especially since there were more than one love triangle going on at a time. I think the author would have been better off writing a book for each couple instead of congesting them all into one.

The writing style often felt underdeveloped, but honestly full of potential. I enjoyed the plot, just didn't love the execution.

I would definitely try other works from this author.

It reads like a wattpad book because it is a wattpad book. We are told about the rejection after the matter, the angst and grovel is way to short. The relationship with her alpha is a bit immature. Her sister's storyline is interesting. 2.5 because of the subject matter. I could not finish the book because half was removed on wattpad and I could not find it anywhere else.

Needs Editing

Decent story, but there are way too many spelling, grammar and formatting errors. Nearly every page. It was distracting, at times I nearly stopped reading. I would have rated it a 3 but I liked the characters and story. I think however the story was rushed and too many characters.

The Hunting Game was a lot better than I anticipated. It had a lot of twists and turns and it was funny at times. However, I'm not sure why "the other" woman was allowed to stay in the pack to begin with, it just didn't make sense to me. Other than that I liked the book overall.

I originally started reading this on Wattpad awhile ago. Once I was sucked in, because werewolf romances are my go to on Wattpad so it didn't take long with good writing, I had to buy the published version. I really enjoy this as a quick fun read and it got me out of a reading slump.

I love this book she didn't throw everything at them including the kitchen sink. I hate books that do that having a relationship is hard all on it's on they don't need all the villains.

The book is different from other werewolf romances breaking taboo about being fated to the one given by god, 'soulmate'. Liela Vy brings romance, betrayal, adventure and great sex under one book. The characters will make you fall in love.

Good read

This was a very good rejected mate book. This is one of my favorite tropes to read, and it is refreshing to find another good one.
