3.5 stars. It's a testament to how much AGB did that this book is so long. It was kind of a slog to finish. I was surprised by how many attempts at further invention he made after the telephone, largely due to his desire to not be known solely as the man who invented the telephone. His work with sheep, airplanes and hydroplanes show he was a dedicated inventor as long as he lived. He rarely denied random visitors access to his home and he was active in helping the deaf and hearing impaired nearly to the end. His generosity should be an example to all of us, as well as his unwillingness to ever give up.

Prior to reading this chronicle of his life, I never knew the scope and variety of his explorations and inventions. Not being a scientist or inventor, it was enlightening to follow his diverse interests throughout his life. It was well worth the the time.

Remarkable man, I enjoyed learning about some of his habits and opinions in this fascinating era of American scientific growth. He wanted to be known as a teacher first and foremost (of the deaf). A family man through and through. America was lucky to heist him from the Scots.

Amazing book. For any engineer, scientist or inventor who wants to learn about the process of how you come up with ideas, develop them and create a real product.
