Shocking!
Erin and Marty love horror movies so Erin’s dad likes to get them access to free movies for testing purposes. So far it is a great experience.
Mr. Wright, Erin’s father, is opening up a new theme park on Shock Street, a popular attraction. Mr. Wright wants Erin and Marty to be the first kids to have a go at it.
The children are ecstatic. They love the idea of being the first to test out their horror dreams.
The children take a tram around the theme park to test out the latest horror exhibits on display. They are excited and eager. And they are having a blast.
But sometimes they are disappointed about some of the things that are happening. And then some other things are going on.
To go any further will not be good for the situation and the surprise. So, I will stop right here.
Four stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm shocked...at how disappointing A Shocker on Shock Street was, as I've heard mostly good things about it, and as the praying mantis from this book got a decent amount of screen time in the 2015 Goosebumps movie, which I loved. Unfortunately, this one didn't live up to the hype as I was hoping it would. Not even remotely.
The story follows two young protagonists as they are given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to do the initial test run of a new studio tour at their favourite movie studio, Shocker Studios. Things of course go awry during the tour, and they have to fend off various monsters which look so believable they think they might be real, instead of the animatronic robots they should be.
The writing in this book is incredibly lazy, even by Stine standards: he uses the words "shrill" and "shrilly" probably 200 times in this book, sometimes multiple times on a single page, in addition (of course) to the other crutch words he endlessly uses in every Goosebumps book (e.g. "stammered", "declared", "demanded", etc).
At one point, Stine's writing is so lazy that he forgets what he wrote only a page or two earlier. On one page, it says:
At the back of the lot stood a low brick wall, just a foot or two taller than Marty and me.
And then a page or two later the kids can't climb up the wall because it's too high! Lol:
Marty leaped high, stretching up his arms. His hands slapped the top of the wall, then slid back down. He tried again. He bent his knees. Jumped. Grabbed for the top of the wall. Slipped back down.
"I can't!" he wailed. "It's too high."
Rofl!
I also think this book generally has the most plot holes and nonsensical occurrences of any Goosebumps book I've read so far. At one point, the main characters are riding on the tour's out-of-control tram car, and jump off right before it hits the wall of a castle on the movie set. They watch the tram car go right through the wall as if the castle weren't even there, and so they logically conclude it must be some optical illusion movie effect and that the castle must really be a hologram or something similar. But then they walk up to the castle and put their hands on it, and it's solid stone? How this physical tram car that they were riding on just seconds before managed to pass through a solid stone wall is never explained.
Another thing that didn't make sense was that the two kids were doing a test run of a movie studio tour that eventually a lot of people (including other children) would ride on. So why was the tram car going so fast that trees were described as going past it in a blur? Why would you design a ground level tram car tour through a movie studio where the tram car goes so fast it could crash and kill everyone on board? It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
The book also fell apart in the last ten pages, as so many Goosebumps books do, with Stine dropping three or four plot twists in rapid succession and then the book just ending. The ending was pretty terrible, as most of these twists were really dumb, and were things Stine has done before many times in his other books. Before the ending, this was a two-star mediocre book the entire way through. After the ending, though, it dropped down to a 1.5 for me (the CAWPILE rating system gives this a two-star rating below, but for me it feels more like 1.5 stars).
This is one to avoid.

Erin's dad works in the horror film industry, and he's asked Erin and her friend Marty to test a new theme park ride that's sure to shock and scare. Cue thrills and chills and creepy crawlies as Erin and Marty end up with more than they bargained for, as the ride starts to feel a little bit too real.
This Goosebumps actually had quite a bit going for it. Distinctly unique from the previous books I've read so far, it uses the film industry and costumes to add that extra layer of doubt to the story. You're never quite sure if everything is real or just an elaborate disguise or robot. The pacing is also pretty good, and has a plot that for the most part makes sense. The ending is very abrupt however, and still sways towards the ridiculous.
All in all, probably the best story in the series so far with an air of the nostalgic, classic goosebumps atmosphere I've been expecting (yet not getting) with these stories so far.

#35 "It's a real dead end."
Erin and Marty are big horror movie buffs. They love the Shocker on Shock Street films. So when they get the opportunity to visit the Shocker Studio Theme Park they jump at the chance. It's everything they hoped it would be. Just like in the movies. But it's all completely fake rig right? Very much like one day at HorrorLand with giant monsters.

What a fun Goosebumps book! This has a lot of differences to its TV episode counterpart (and I definitely prefer the TV episode), but this was fun the whole way through. The story follows Erin and Marty, two best friends who love horror movies. They get to be the first kids to take a tour through the Shocker Studio Theme Park, (a place which R.L. Stine admits was inspired by Universal Studios) and all sorts of creepy madness ensues. The atmosphere in this is amazing as R.L. did a really great job describing the setting, and the twist at the end is so legendary. My only two complaints are that Marty was a total turd and it was almost too action-packed for its own good. Otherwise, I enjoyed this one a lot.

I ignored all the sounds. I didn't want to think about whether they were being made by real monsters or fakes. I didn't want to think about the frightening creatures we had run into - or the close calls Marty and I had had.

Excellent. We're back on track. This is a great Goosebumps novel.
Erin and Marty are best friends - 12 years old and so similar-looking they are often mistaken for twins. But they are similar in more than appearance! They both love horror movies, and always go to the latest one together. Erin is lucky that her dad is a theme park engineer, he often gets her tickets to advance showings.
And Erin's dad has great news! He has completed a Shocker Street theme park. Shocker Street is a series of horror movies that Erin and Marty love. There are six so far, starring the dubiously named creatures like Ape Face, the Toxic Creep, Shockro, and Captain Sick. (Among others. o.O) Anyway, Erin's father says Marty and Erin can be the first ones to go through the park (on an automated tram). They can be the "test subjects" for his first run-through. The kids are so excited! This is a dream come true!
Only when they take the tour, it seems a little too real. A little too creepy. Those costumes the actors are wearing are surprisingly realistic. Warned time and time again never to leave the tram, the kids run into certain ... bugs in the system.

Wow, Stine is back in full-force here! I really enjoyed this book. Also, Stine delivers some excellent and surprising twists! The ending was a real shocker! LOL No complaints here, this is what Goosebumps should be - fun, scary, and with a surprise ending that knocks your socks off! Highly recommended for any kid.

Look to be honest I don't think I will ever not be entertained by giant monsters rampaging through cities, destroying things and terrorising people.
I don't really know what that says about me as a person, but it does mean this was a fun read.

This little beauty has become my new favourite Goosebumps book! I was feeling smug about having guessed the twist towards the end and then we're hit with another twist from nowhere late on....very creepy! Absolutely loved the journey through the caves which brought back happy memories of the River Caves at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Also, had a good chuckle at the names of some of the monsters :)

I have no words. When i first read this book in 2023 I hated it. Upon rereading I realised how stupid of a take that was.
This book was absolutely amazing, the atmosphere, characters, the plot, the ending was incredible

This one, thus far, is my favourite of the Goosebumps books. Even the “surprise ending” was terrifying when you stop and think about it.

Disappointing. The intro and build-up were promising -- I enjoyed the atmosphere of the foggy, deserted park, and I liked the idea it was based around a popular series of schlocky horror movies, obviously inspired both by the '50s monster movies of Stine's youth and the more recent (especially in the '90s) medley of teen slashers. I also liked the conceit of a test run for two lucky kids. You could do a number of things with that kind of set-up. Unfortunately nothing Stine chose was anything more than cliche. The second half especially killed the story. The ending reveals the emptiness of every preceding scene, and the plot peeters out for the sake of what is essentially a novella-length joke. You think there isn't anything worse than "it was all a dream," but Stine has actually used dreams somewhat effectively in other works. To date, he has not worked out the kinks on "they were actually just malfunctioning robots." For further evidence I submit Planet of the Lawn Gnomes and My Alien Parents. You'd think he'd have dropped this stinker for a different joke by now, but don't ask me to divine his writerly ways.
The first half weights the book towards four stars, and the second half comes down heavily on one star. Let's meet somewhere in the middle and throw it a three.

Νομίζω πως το βιβλίο αυτό παίζει με μια ιδέα που έχει περάσει από το μυαλό όλων μας όταν όντας παιδιά, παρακολουθήσαμε κάποια ταινία ακατάλληλου περιεχομένου (και όχι, δεν εννοώ πορνό, αλλά θρίλερ), κυρίως b-movies της δεκαετίας του '80 και του '90 που φρόντισαν να μετατρέψουν σε πραγματικότητα μερικούς από τους χεριότερους εφιάλτες μας (ή έστω, του εφιάλτες της νοικοκυράς). Γρήγορο, με νεύρο, έντονη δράση και αρκετό χιούμορ, το βιβλίο αυτό διασκεδάζεις να το διαβάζεις από την αρχή μέχρι και το τέλος.

A Shocker on Shock Street by R.L. Stine is one of the scarier Goosebumps. Kids go on a ride inspired by their favorite movie monsters that soon turns to terror, as the monsters they thought were fake are real. The pace is pretty fast and doesn't let up. There's a fair amount of pranks in this one some work and other do not. This novel seems to be a cross between Universal's tour ride, if the studio was all about B-movies. The film Them! is a big influence as well as Jurassic Park. The final twist in this one is on of the better one in Goosebumps. In this novel you feel the danger as the monsters are out to harm the kids, the werewolf scene is pretty terrifying as well as the zombielike people.
Plot Summary: Erin and Marty are best friend who kind look like each other but are not siblings. The friends bond over horror movies from their favorite studio Shock Street Studios. Erin's dad is a robotics engineer and has made a tram car ride that acts as a studio tour for Shock Street Studios. The kids are the first to check it out to make sure it works. They are both excited and scared. The tram ride starts okay, but soon goes off the rails and gets stuck, the one rule Erin's dad said was stay in the tram at all times, but they don't listen and learn monsters are real.
What I Liked: The terror is pretty nonstop, once the kids think they're safe another danger is in front of their faces. I liked the final twist a lot, this and A Night in Terror Tower have been my favorites so far. I liked all the references to 1950's B-movies. I like that this book went for the scares, worms, spiders, skeletons, werwolves, giant bugs, and zombies.
What I Disliked: After the final twist I had questions was the ride supposed to do that? Does it want riders to break the rules? Why is their no safety bar on the ride? I wanted more information on the monsters.
Recommendation: A Shocker on Shock Street is a pretty scary entry into the Goosebumps series, that keeps jumping to danger. The scares are there. The story is pretty Good fro a Goosebumps book. I think this is a great book if your kid wants something a little bit scarier from Goosebumps. I read this while suffering a bout of insomnia, thinking I'd nod off to sleep halfway through - and it was short. All it really did was make me want to read another! Erin and Marty are delighted to be the test subjects for a new theme park based on the "Shocker On Shock Street" movies that they're such fans of. Even reading this decades later, you can see why the Goosebumps books were so popular. Once this one gets going, it doesn't stop for all its 117 pages. Erin and Marty are attacked by an assortment of monsters throughout the story, often just narrowly escaping. The cliffhanger chapter endings are a bit too reliant on Marty "disappearing" or pranking Erin, but that's par for the course for an R.L. Stine book! It caps off with a plot twist (as these books do), that I didn't see coming. It stretched credibility big time, but that being said, this IS a Goosebumps book, where you're not supposed to think about it too much!

Erin and her friend Marty are big fans of the horror franchise ‘Shock Street’.
So when Erin finds out that her father is working on an amusement park based on the hit series, she can’t contain her delight! As she is given the chance to experience the park prior to the big unveiling.
I loved the various characters that Stine creates that Erin and Marty meet along the way. This leads to some fun cliffhangers and of course the iconic Praying Mantis!
One of the great Goosebumps twists, I also like the amount of foreshadowing that happens in the first half of the book.

I always thought this one was super creepy. Maybe this is why I hate praying mantises to this day.

This is a thrilling read which kept me at edge. The ending is a shocker and I think reading this in middle of the night added to the fun.

I love books about haunted houses and things of that nature. While I love reading about them, I can't be in them. I'm about 3 scares away from a heart attack. Anyways, the book sounds dumb and the cover looks like a movie cover for Starship Troopers V, but it was actually pretty good. You have two kids who get to be the first kids to test out a horror ride or a tour ride of Shocker Studios. They get to see every scene from movies in the studio, but it comes to life! Now that would be fun.....and it was a fun read up until....you guessed it. The ending. It ruined the book for me. I can't understand how a creative genius like R.L. can screw up an entire book with one chapter! Luckily it was the final chapter. I did not like how the book began however. The first chapter was about the kids being scared of something, we don't really know what about. Than chapter two cancels out chapter one completely. Chapter One should be an intro to the story and while we do get to familiarize ourselves with the Shocker films. It didn't have to be done that way and take up 4 pages. Might as well skip to chapter two and start reading from there. Erin gives you an explanation of the Shocker films, making chapter one completely pointless. Mix that with the final chapter and it just doesn't make any sense. In fact after reading the final chapter the first 3 and a half chapters are pointless! Anywho, you read it, I did like the book as I read it, but as I review it, I must be honest, I enjoyed chapters 4-28, the rest I could do without. You can actually skip the first 3 chapters and the last and still enjoy the book. Make up your own ending.

Goosebumps. This is the series that kept me reading through my childhood. More than any other series, Goosebumps kept me interested in reading, and R.L. Stein is a wonderful children's writer. I applaud his efforts, and can't express enough my gratitude for the series.

Didn't care for this one. The twist ending has been done before and kind of ruins the rest of the book.
