Saakshi and Zoran grabbed my heart! They are both so strong, yet so different. You feel the unspoken love between them, and can't help but to cheer them on. Petra Landon takes you on an exciting emotional journey with a fabulous ending. I can't wait to read book 2 of this series! ...more

I received the ARC from the author.

Since this is the debut, I think it was not bad at all! It could have been better, but it was interesting.

I ilked the backstory of the rebellion against the incredibly power-grabbing Ketaari, but at the same time I couldn't understand how it was possible for the Ketaari to subjugate the powerful and technologically advanced Budheya - it was never explained clearly, just a nebulous hints were given. That is what I missed most!

Probably the author saved the explan

Fantastic read!

The Mercenary is an unforgettable science fiction romance involving a battle hardened warrior who is presented with an opportunity to protect and help a prisoner whose race is under the rule of the brutal Ketaari. He could use her desperate situation to his advantage or he could use it to make her life and the galaxy a better place.

As I read The Mercenary, the saying “One person can make a difference” kept springing to mind. The one person who makes all the difference in Saakshi’
The Mercenary by Petra Landon is an experience that every sci-fi fan out there would thoroughly enjoy reading. Not only is the world building richly detailed and exceptionally thought out, where you find yourself catapulted within quadrants and upon space stations, it is also delicately mesmerising and incredibly descriptive. No detail is spared. This enhances the plot of the story and serves its purpose as a backdrop to the incredible characters and how the story unfolds - it's almost so tangib ...more

Really liked it! I am not a big sci-fi fan but this book was great! The world building was exceptional, making me feel like I was right there in space. It was very detailed but I was never bored.

I am a romance reader at heart so I loved the story of Saakshi and Zoran. Saaksi is very innocent and Zoran is so HOT!! I loved him! He’s a mercenary but has a great heart and morals. They had great chemistry together and I really enjoyed watching them grow as a couple and as individuals.

In the day or so since I finished this exciting new space opera series with a strong romantic element, I am left with a myriad of impressions. I liked this book. I found the story arc very interesting and the characters compelling. But for all the detail, I left the book feeling fuzzy with....impressions. I didn't feel grabbed like I was on the ride of my life. And I wanted that. And I think author Petra Landon is capable

Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So glad to have my hands on another Petra Landon book! Her first book The Prophecy was a great book and I had high expectations for this book as well. I have to say; Petra Landon did not let me down! The Prophecy is categorized as Fantasy and this one is in the Science Fiction genre and I'm blown away on how well Petra Landon can handle both these genres. The worldbuilding in her books are amazing!

I just finished The Mercenary and was blown away by the story. I thought the blurb was interesting and I was not disappointing. I thought the world building was great and the story well written and very addicting. After the first chapter I was hooked and finished the story in one sitting. A great book 1 for an engaging scifi story with action and romance. There was a little tiny bit of mystery added to make things interesting that raised questions that I hope will be answered in later books. The ...more

While there is a bit of telling rather than showing, this is a top-notch sci-fi romance! The characters are relatable and sympathetic and the story draws the reader in immediately. For anyone who enjoys sci-fi with a bit of steam, this series holds the promise of becoming a fabulous addition!

I'm giving this a 3 for its potential, but the execution, unfortunately was a little flawed.

Let's ignore the insta-love completely, which everyone knows that I have problems with already, and just focus on the writing and general storyline.

For a book that covers the meeting of its main characters, development of a relationship, and organization and execution of a revolution, it was a lot of story for a mere 200 pages and more time should have been spent on world- and relationship-building. Als

I reached about 50%.

This book was so strange, it had such an 80s/90s feel to it. In fact I double checked when this was written as I couldn't quite work it out. It reminded me of an old fashioned bodice ripper...the hero was a lot older and in a position of power, the heroine was younger and was powerless (she was a slave). The heroine asks the hero to protect her in return for use of her body. There wasn't quite a forced seduction (nice way of saying rape), however, the heroine was under the im

Two things are needed for me to LOVE a book. 1. of course is the content and how it's written. If it doesn't catch my interest and/or the writing is terrible, I pretty much shelf the book. I can't deal with that - life is too short and there's too many great and wonderful books out there to get to. 2. some romance. It doesn't need much, but I do need some. ;) I'm a mushy person, I can't help it.

The Mercenary contained BOTH of my prerequisites. I very much enjoyed the read. Of course, there's the

When I read the synopsis on this I just knew it would be something that I would enjoy.
I love fantasy books, however, I mostly read ones more on the side of witches, werewolves, angels etc so i was excited to see what this book had in store for me.

I can tell you I was not disappointed at all.

I loved Patra's writing style. The way she describes the intimate encounters is very clever. She does it in a way that details what is happening without being crude. it sounds strange but I have got used to r

The Mercenary (The War Chronicles #1) by Petra Landon

The author offered me a review copy and I'd been reading along and enjoying it mightily. Very strong and likeable characters, slimy bad guys, great world building, romance, action, page turning plot – everything I love in a book. And then I ran into one of those traffic jams that occasionally appear on everyone's life highway and couldn't read for weeks! Yes, it was very painful but my point is this book lingered in my mind. Rapt attention

Saakshi is a gentle soul but that doesn't mean she won't defend herself. Orphaned as a child, captured, imprisoned, and practically a slave, she has been through much in her life. Even so she still has an innocent guileless heart. I was in rapt attention when she was put between two difficult choices. Either succumb to the enemy slimeball or ask Zoran for help in return for sexual favors. I love how brave she was and I really enjoyed Zoran's reaction. Priceless. Very exciting book.

With all the watered down sci-fi we are flooded with, Petra Landon brings back true sci-fi with The Mercenary. From the first page I was drawn into the world that was weaved. I felt truly bad and angry at the injustice and the deplorable way Saakshi and her people, the Budheya, have been treated by the Ketaari. Saakshi was arrested on her home planet from those who have invaded and taken it over, Ketaari. While serving her prison contract at an alehouse she meets Zoran. Saakshi is threatened by ...more

The Mercenary, by Petra Landon is the first book in a planned series based around the characters we find in this story and their adventures through space, as they fight for the freedom of their people and the Alliance. As a standalone novel it is a success and as an introduction to a different world, with many weird and wonderful races, it is equally a huge success.

Definitely my newest addition to Authors and series I must keep an eye out for new releases from!! The story of a prisoner who is basically on a work release program and meets the tall dark and extremely well built man of her dreams appealed to my every favorite fantasy! Set in space and on the edges of civilizations where roughness is a definite advantage, it takes what appears to be a small helpless female and shows us how strong and resilient she really can be.

I came upon this book The Mercenary by Petra Landon and I was super excited, I love a good sci-fi romance. This book was really good, in fact the sign of a good book for me is when I don't want to rush reading it. The author did a great job of making a world I could picture in my head while also coming up with characters I could get behind and come to love. Zoran is a very endearing guy I couldn't help but like, but I would have enjoyed having more from his point of view. Saashki and Zoran's story drew me in from the beginning. They were two people drawn to each other at a time of great distress. When I got to the last chapter I had my doubts how the story was going to be wrapped up. Their story wasn't ju ...more

Good, solid science fiction romance story. I really enjoyed the characters, world-building and plot. I felt the book lagged a bit in the 2nd half, but I am glad I kept reading. The end wraps up things nicely for the hero and heroine while hinting at the continuation of the story.
