Shapes

Applying the tactile features of Montessori teaching, this innovative board book uses lightly grained sandpaper tracks to encourage children to trace various shapes as they enjoy whimsical illustrations of each. Shapes introduced include; squares, diamonds, ovals, rectangles, hearts, hexagons, diamonds, trapezoids, octagons and stars. Sturdy board pages and no moveable parts make this a unique addition to an early learning collection.

Wilson, Katie Shapes. BOARD BOOK. Flowerpot Press, 2017. $8.99. 978-1486710249

This is a must have book for every home and classroom! Each page explores not only shapes but numbers. 1 Octagon in the shape of a stop sign. 10 trees in the shape of pine trees. Little fingers can trace each of the shapes which are outlined in black dotted lines. Number recognition is also taught. The colors are bold and bright. The illustrations are simple and fun. We loved this great book!

Kids can practice counting objects and identifying shapes in this board book.

Much more successful than the Numbers title in this series, Wilson uses a lighter, brighter palette in Shapes. As in Numbers, the font is large and handwritten. There is a touch of whimsy in most two page spreads. Although the description on GoodReads states it uses sandpaper to trace fingers, this copy uses a shiny finish on items with the featured shape with black dotted lines around one of them for children to identify like shapes on the two-page spread. Counting goes 1-10.

Recommended for toddlers.

This was a wonderful book to get kids thinking about shapes and see that everything in the world is made up of shapes. However, there were a few shapes in the board book that children did not know because they were too young; i.e. trapezoids or hexagons. Things to think about when determining whether or not to read again to toddlers in the future.

Yup, shapes and numbers. Examples are correct, selection and diversity of shapes is fun.
