A beautiful collection of Renaissance poetry, assembled by one of the world's finest historical novelists.Dorothy Dunnett died in November 2001. She left behind this anthology, chosen by her from the hundreds of poems which she used in her world-famous series of novels known as THE LYMOND CHRONICLES.It is a fascinating set of choices, featuring Thomas Wyatt, King James I, extracts from the Psalms, and even an anonymous poem called 'Monologue of a Drunkard' - as Dorothy herself writes, here in one volume is 'the poetry of love, of folk-humour and ballad, the songs of Persian poets and of the troubadours, translated where need be into English.'
Dorothy Dunnett OBE was a Scottish historical novelist. She is best known for her six-part series about Francis Crawford of Lymond, The Lymond Chronicles, which she followed with the eight-part prequel The House of Niccolò. She also wrote a novel about the real Macbeth called King Hereafter and a series of mystery novels centered on Johnson Johnson, a portrait painter/spy.
One of my favorite series is the "Lymond Chronicles" by Dorothy Dunnett; Lymond is a Renaissance-era hero who quotes literature as often as he gets in trouble (which is really often). This book takes some of Lymond's quotes and offers the entire work. Classic French and Old English poems are the majority represented here, and most are virtually unknown today. As part of my challenge to read a book of potery a month, I'm glad I started with this one.
How glad I am that I bought this book when it was first published in 2003.
This book is almost essential as reference material for those of us who seek to have ready and easier access to the poems behind Lymond's quotes.
It is also a lovely memento of the wit and erudition of Lady Dunnett herself. If you are a Dunnett fan, and you have an opportunity to acquire a copy of this book, please do so.
It will enrich your enjoyment of the Lymond Chronicles immensely.
