Recon: The Complete Series

Rate this book
The full collection of all four books in the mil-SF RECON series:
A War to the Knife
A Wolf in the Fold
A Battle for the Gods
A Fight to the Death
Tyler Callas is the pampered scion of one of the ruling families of the Corporate Council, the legal monopoly that runs the human Commonwealth. His mother has his life planned out, with a seat by her side, running the conglomerate.
Tyler has other ideas. With the help of a great-grandfather who was a United States Marine when there used to be a United States, Tyler changes his face and his identity, becoming Randall Munroe and enlisting in the Fleet Marine Corps, qualifying for the point of the sword, Force Recon.
Plunged into an interstellar war against the relentless Tahni Empire, Munroe is stranded alone on an occupied colony and forced to organize a civilian resistance to the enemy. The year of constant violence and death wears him down, yet sharpens him at the same time.
After the war, Munroe once again takes up arms, this time against his will, when his uncle, Andre Damiani, the head of the Corporate Council, blackmails him into leading a special squad of trouble-shooters, eliminating threats to Council business among the criminal cabals in the Pirate Worlds.
But the real enemy is still the Council, and Munroe vows to take the fight to them, no matter what the cost.

Excellent Series

Recon is the story of Munroe, a child of the ruling elite who rebels against his mother's control and joins the marines. On only his second mission he is left alone on an alien occupied world and leads the locals insurgency until help arrives more than a year later. He travels the stars as a covert operator with his team working for one faction of the elites, always just barely a step ahead of his mother's clutches. This is a gritty narrative on the horrors of combat, of friends lost and of overcoming odds. Don't miss this one. Thank you Rick Partlow for a really entertaining read!

Rocking and Rolling

And reeling. When I read my first book in this Universe, I just knew I should have checked to see what order they had been written - or at leased checked to see if someone had a recommendation. But, noooo. Not me. But it wasn't because of me not following up. It was Rick Partlow's fault.
It took no effort at all just to keep reading book after book, so it's not surprising I started to get a little dizzy. After all, the main characters were the same, but it seemed as if each book introduced more main characters that were important to the flow of the story. They couldn't be minimized.
The writing is completely different, but the interconnectedness of the characters seemed like a Lazarus Long story, without all of the sometimes weird sex.
I could write an essay about what I think I saw, the relationships that seem so very familiar to today's political wars. But that would take too long, so .....
The bottom line is I really enjoyed the stories in this universe. BUT, there are just one or two too many strings to completely shut this universe down. Could there be another arm of this universe just waiting to be explored?

This is one hell of a Space Opera!

What a story! From the first page to the last line, this is one hell of a Space Opera, Military Sci-fi series! I got so involved in the story line that I couldn't stop reading this series for the three days it took to read it. It has action, intrigue, love, hate, lots of War and allot of win. You will come to know the characters, love some and hate others, just like life really is. You will feel the emotions the author has written onto the pages and go along for the ride, the highs and the lows. If you love great Sci-fi, you will love this one!

Unexpected

This was not at all what I expected. The MC was in Recon in the first book but, after that, no. So if you are expecting a military sci-fi series this isn’t it. For me, there were too many times when I felt that the story was repetitive while at other times it was boring. There were some good ideas but I didn’t find the MC to be particularly likeable. I accept idiomatic American English when the right character uses it but Monroe was from the elite. His language would have been excellent even if he did join up as a grunt. I know that there will be people out there who will like the series but, unfortunately, I’m not one of them.

Heavy, constant action

This is an omnibus of four books set in the familiar universe of Cam & Vickie’s postwar period of the human war with the Tahni.
Monroe leads his team on ever increasingly dangerous & challenging missions while always fighting to return to Sophie. We see events in a different perspective that also occurred in the other novels. There’s far too many details to provide in a review, even if I was willing to provide spoilers. All I can say is that I suggest you plan on getting buried in this for long stretches of time as you race for the finish!

One of the best military sci-fi books I have read in a while

I read a lot of military and other sci-fi and I always give a rating. I almost never give a written review mostly because I am too lazy to do so.

But the books in the Recon series or so interesting, well written and compelling that I had to say something. I hope the author will continue the series with Monroe and I'm now off to read some of his other books.

Just finished reading this series, and really really enjoyed it. I read sci-fi of all types, including plenty of military marine stories and like them well enough but they can be a little samey, and lacking in characterisation. This series was excellent, with great characters I really engaged with and a story that kept me hooked right the way through. I also appreciated that all the good guys didn't miraculously survive, and mourned the loss of several throughout the books. Great read!

Absolutely great military sci-fi

Read straight through the series. If you like military science fiction this is a really good series. Sometimes you realize the good guys weren't necessarily who you thought. The action is non stop. I'm he insight into the characters is some of the best and the world building great. Definitely recommend this series.

The first of the three books was the best, the next book was not as good as the first and the last was average at best. The story was not but some of the characters were off to me and took away from the story. If he has another story based on the hero I will read to see if he can get the magic of the first book.

Nonstop action and fantastic characters

I truly enjoyed this series. One of the few books I’ve read recently that was hard to put down. The author does not let you rest between the details action scenes. Late nights and early mornings will be waiting you when reading this fantastic action thriller. Enjoy!

Outstanding

I'd never heard of Rick Partlow. I downloaded the free sample of this collection in hopes of finding a new author I could tolerate while waiting for some other releases. I haven't been able put this down since I started.

Partial is a master of action. He has quickly moved to the top of my list of favorites.

Great writing, continuously changing action with consistent high level story development. Characters continue to change and develop based on the things they’ve experienced. One overall continuous story told in multiple books. Loved it.

Page Turner on Steroids

I loved the first-person narrative. I identified with the main character immediately and stayed connected through FOUR books! Astounding! There was an abundance of details and science-fiction that was tight and well thought-out.

Long series

Parts of the story really seemed to drag. I realized that I wasn’t captured by the books the way I am with a excellent storyline. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t extremely good.

Good

Well crafted science fiction, story flowing from one action scene 8nto another, characters that were personable, relatable and for the most part very likeable. All in all, a very good book.

What a marvelous exciting STORY

From page 1, I was hooked. Rick Partlow can create an extremely entertaining, and quite believable military action novel.

Fun read but more than a bit overdone.

Dragged out the villain for too long. Should have shifted around a bit. I enjoyed reading it from an entertainment point of view. A lot of plot twists and turns. Great imagination, don't know how he came up with all the ideas.

Rich boy gone rogue

Really enjoyed the plot. Story moved right a long. Lots of action maybe a little bloody for the younger set. The lead character was a modern John Wayne. The other characters were very well thought out as well. All and all an excellent adventure.
