Most of the...poems in this collection from the unquenchable Bradbury are new, but all have his evergreen touch - accessible, humorous, quietly emotional... Bradbury can't long restrain his usual luxuriating in the sensual wonder of life... Bradbury fans, Hibernophiles, general readers, even some contemporary poetry snobs, will find this a lovely read.""--Publishers Weekly
Ray Douglas Bradbury was an American author and screenwriter. One of the most celebrated 20th-century American writers, he worked in a variety of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery, and realistic fiction.
Bradbury is best known for his novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953) and his short-story collections The Martian Chronicles (1950), The Illustrated Man (1951), and The October Country (1955). Other notable works include the coming of age novel Dandelion Wine (1957), the dark fantasy Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962) and the fictionalized memoir Green Shadows, White Whale (1992). He also wrote and consulted on screenplays and television scripts, including Moby Dick and It Came from Outer Space. Many of his works were adapted into television and film productions as well as comic books. Bradbury also wrote poetry which has been published in several collections, such as They Have Not Seen the Stars (2001).
The New York Times called Bradbury "An author whose fanciful imagination, poetic prose, and mature understanding of human character have won him an international reputation" and "the writer most responsible for bringing modern science fiction into the literary mainstream".
The quality of the poems varies quite a lot, from the sublime and beautiful to the vague and pretentious. I think it's the type of collection that's best read in little bites.
I didn’t like some of the poems in this collection, but others punched me in the gut, and gave me goosebumps. For that reason, I give it 5 stars, and will be buying a copy for my collection.
This book was hard for me to rate. On one hand, it's Ray Bradbury, who has written some fantastic books. He is clearly a talented storytelling and that can be seen in many of these poems.
On the other hand, this book was so far outside my personal preferences. Most of the book is rhyming poetry in a sing-song rhythm. Several of the poems use archaic word choice. The text contains typos.
All in all, I give it 2.5 stars. Consider getting it if you're a big Ray Bradbury fan or really like rhyming poetry. Otherwise maybe give it a pass.
This is a collection of Bradbury's poems, pulled together for publication in Ireland and the UK it appears. I have read most of them before and there is nothing particularly exciting in the new ones.
My big complaint here is that the proof-reading is poor. There were a number of typos in this slim volume, and that strikes me as very poor form when dealing with poetry - where presumably every word counts.
An excellent book of poetry from the wonderful imagination of Ray Bradbury.
What I love about this poetry is the beautiful simplicity of it. Mr Bradbury writes about common things that anyone can love and appreciate. Often I find poetry elitist but this collection is anything but.
Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, always enjoable this is the sort of poetry I will re-read whenever I feel down.
