This book has ten short stories and ten poems, along with "Reflect" and "Write" exercises for each. Three groupings divide the book into chunks of 6-8 items; the groups are labelled "Beginning", "Building", and "Extending." I'm not sure exactly what those grouping names are supposed to indicate, whether it is a difficulty level or something else entirely. There is a good mix of authors and lots of diversity in the selections. My favorite was the story "One Throw" by W.C. Heinz, which was written in 1950. You can read "One Throw" here: http://www.bronxbanterblog.com/2010/11/16/one-throw/

My student and I shared a good laugh with the first poem of this book They went home by Maya Angelou. This is a good beginning for a tool that will stay with us at least for a year.
