This comprehensive study details the evolution, biology, and behavior of the cetaceans and their history of interaction with humans. It represents the synthesis of the most recent research and gives the reader a deeper knowledge and appreciation of these majestic animals. Includes a directory of the several species of whales and dolphins, with characteristics, distributions, and unusual facts. Over 500 color photographs and illustrations.
This book is fascinating and putting it down is an exercise in discipline. It discusses some of the biology other "Whales and Dolphins" titles skip over without reaching the level of college textbook (which would be awesome...someone write that!). Circulation, echolocation, the brain, and more! It's a great overview and I recommend it for anyone looking for more in depth than the typical topics of social groups, whaling and praising their beauty and intelligence.
