No Other Gods - Revised & Updated - Bible Study Book: The Unrivaled Pursuit of Christ

Rate this book
No Other The Unrivaled Pursuit of Christ includes fresh content, activities, recipes, and eight video teaching sessions. This study will challenge women to evaluate the modern-day idols in our culture and embrace a deeper, more meaningful relationship with Jesus. Often, idols are obvious—money, power, fame. But subtler idols can sometimes take the form of sweet loved ones, Instagramable interiors, and busy seasons of ministry.

But if your heart is prioritizing any of those pursuits before God, they are taking up space meant for Him alone.

In this 8-session study, learn to identify the functional gods you are serving daily and the lies they tell. Only when you learn to dethrone modern-day idols can you pursue a deeper, more meaningful relationship with Jesus.

Kelly lives in Nashville, Tennessee, and serves the Lord passionately both across the U.S. and internationally in a variety of creative roles. An acclaimed author, musician, Bible study creator and teacher, she is passionate to see women impacted by Jesus and His Word.

Growing up outside of Washington, DC, Kelly was raised in a Christian home, the oldest of four children and daughter of a pastor. Her childhood was seasoned with competitive sports, learning the guitar, singing, and a litany of church activities in the congregation her father founded and still pastors. Like many young women, Kelly dealt with inner struggles – anxiety and depression were a part of her growing-up years. “Those struggles are what drove me to Scripture,” Kelly says, “and the catalyst for me to learn for myself who God is.” Throughout her high school career, Kelly played basketball competitively, expecting that to be her path into college. But after a scholarship fell through, she began playing music. And God began a new thing.

Kelly moved to Nashville in the summer of 2000 and released her first record with WORD, followed by a subsequent release on a different label, leading to her first #1 Single on the Inspirational Charts, This Is My Offering. Shortly after this success and several cross-country tours her record company folded leaving Kelly to rethink her vocation and ministry. In the middle of an ever-changing music industry and on a tour through Colorado, Kelly met a book publisher who would two years later sign her to her first book deal.

Kelly’s first book eventually led to LifeWay approaching her about writing a bible study. Authoring curriculum was a new challenge, but one she quickly fell in love with. Kelly’s first three studies include, No Other Gods: Confronting Our Modern Day Idols, followed by Ruth: Loss, Love & Legacy and Nehemiah: A Heart That Can Break. Respected Bible Study teacher and speaker, Beth Moore, chose each of Kelly’s resources for three of her widely-reaching online summer studies. Thousands of women participated and were challenged by Kelly’s writing and her unique perspective on Scripture.

Kelly now writes, teaches, and sings across the United States and also in other countries. Speaking at multiple conferences and events, as well as four Women of Faith events in 2012, Kelly has become a steady and respected teaching voice to women, particularly when it comes to the Scriptures. She also partners closely with Justice and Mercy International (JMI), a ministry that serves in the Amazon jungle; she especially loves working with the jungle pastors who encourage her through their remarkable faith.

When home, Kelly’s days are spent writing, cooking, gardening, enjoying her neighborhood, loving her community, investing in her local church, and walking forward in the things God has for her. She is relevant, palatable, and uncompromising in her teachings from the Bible, and women relate to this.

I really enjoyed this. It was challenging and thorough--she does a deep dive into the old testament as well as the new testament, it was broken down into manageable chunks, it was obvious she had a personal connection to the material, and it was well organized. The last week that really focused on John 15 was very meaningful, and I think flowed well into her "Abide" study on 1/2/3 John. I think she has a really nice way of presenting information that makes room for study, reflection, and lecture. I would definitely do more of her studies, and I'm looking forward to getting into her one on Ruth. My only complaint (with myself) is that it took me almost a year and a half to finish, so I obviously need to schedule some more regular bible study time in the mornings and commit to following through. I get into a good groove and then drop off. No need to rush, but "study fatigue" is a thing too! But I finished! Thankfully I was glad to keep coming back to this one and I really got a lot out of it. Lots of meaty stuff to chew on.

A friend and I lead a young women's study with this book, and I would highly recommend it. Kelly Minter encourages readers to take a long, hard look at their lives and consider what they worship: what takes up the most space in their hearts and minds, what drives their motivations, what takes up their time. It caused me to ask myself questions like, "What do I actually put my trust in? What do I hope for? What do I believe will make me happy or complete? What do I seek to fill me outside of God? How have my insecurities shaped my heart and my actions?" Much of the ideas Minter covered overlapped heavily with things I have been working on with my therapist, and my spiritual and emotional life has been reshaped because of their combined influence!

Loved this study and the reminder to not rely on the things of this world or allow them to take the place of God in our lives. No other God but the One true God can bring satisfaction to our hearts. In Him we find all we need. I did the videos with the study and think they add something extra -- not necessary -- but a nice addition.

This was my first study that I completed from Kelly Minter. The daily homework was mostly the right amount for my lifestyle, but on some occasions I felt it could go deeper. I was not sure what to expect with the study of idols. Some I could previously identify before this study (money, career etc), but it added a few that I hadn't thought of before (people, dreams). My favorite session was the last session that explained what you need to do with your extra time/resources you are no longer spending on idols. Bear fruit. Many studies that I have done tell you how to identify and correct a sin in your life, but fall short on what you should be doing instead. May consider doing this study again in the future.

An 8-week study that stretches from the Old Testament to the New Testament to show the dangers of modern idolatry (which can look a lot more like materialism, an obsession with applause or success, or heavily depending on a relationship) and how it can distance us from the one true God. Minter takes a dig dive into the lies of modern-day idols, what makes us so dependent on them, and the fruitful life that God wants for us instead when we seek Him and no other gods. Idols aren't always what you think, and this study helped recognize some areas in which I needed to repent and draw nearer to the Lord. This was my first study from Minter and it was a bit hard to relate or connect with her as an author, but overall I thought it was a helpful, thought-provoking, and Biblically sound Bible study.

Wow! I don't know where to start. This study came to me at the perfect time (such a God thing) as I was questioning how much time I was giving to certain things in my life; good things that had become idols. It reinforced what I was already feeling and gave me something to stand on in the decisions I was making.
This is the first study that I've done that I didn't end up days or weeks behind on by the end of group meetings. I was actually AHEAD and couldn't get enough. I almost wish it had been longer.
My only critique is that there isn't enough room to write all the good stuff she says in the videos on the actual video session pages- you gotta flip to the notes section in the back.

I LOVED this Bible study! Such a timely topic that will also never go out of style. I feel we always need reminders to keep our priorities straight with our focus on what is truly important. There are so many distractions in our world that make it difficult to keep our focus on Jesus. Kelly reminds us of that in the most gentle and appealing way. She has a nice voice and tone that are easy to listen to in her written words and on her videos that accompany this study. I thought her questions were appropriate and thought provoking and led to good discussions in our Bible study group of women.

I did this Bible Study back when the original version of it came out-- it was my first, true Bible Study. I learned SO MUCH and learned to crave studying the word. Last Spring when I was looking for something to do with a young lady I'm discipling, I saw that this one had been revised and journeyed through this one again-- 11 years later. WOW-- first of all, it was equally as impactful for me-- but second, it was fun to pull my old book out and compare my answers-- I'm a completely different woman I was when I first did it-- the False gods I needed to overcome then, I've completely overcome-- so fun to see that and to know that it will be possible for me to move past and grow from my current struggles and False gods.

Thank you Kelly for taking a leap of faith and writing this.

This was a good Bible study. The topic, our everyday idols, is thought provoking. I found Kelly Minter to be an okay speaker (on the DVDs). I enjoyed the diverse Old Testament examples she used (Hannah, Rachel & Leah, Sarah & Abraham, etc.) I would have liked Kelly to be more transparent with her own idol struggles. She is quite vague about them, which I find leaves the reader unable to identify fully with her.

I really enjoyed this study. I'm much for daily homework but was able to keep up most weeks.

There is a lot of jumping around in the Bible so some of our group found the Bible app to be much easier to use.

Truly a transformative study. Uncovering and uprooting my idols was a hard process, but the joy of allowing God to fill those empty spaces far outweighed the pain to rid them.
Perfect way to end this Easter season.

I would definitely recommend this personal in depth bible study either on your own or with a small group.
Very eye opening perspective on modern day idolatry and the amount of our heart, time and mind those idols fill.
Kelly Minter is very down to earth and relatable.

This just wasn’t for me. Felt too, rudimentary. I can see the draw through if you’ve never wrestled with any of this. I don’t prefer video studies either. Not awful, just not for me. I also am not a huge fan of Kelly.

I did this study with my summer Bible Study group. Although it was a fair amount of work each day for summer, we all really enjoyed it and learned so much! I would highly recommend this study.

You don't realize how many false gods you have until you really think about it. Or at least, I didn't. Excellent, excellent study. Independently or with a group, well worth the read.

This Bible study will stay with me for a long time. It was challenging in the best way. I worked through it slowly and found that I shared each week’s content with my husband who appreciated what I was learning through the weekly homework.

Through the study I realized that while I might say that I served God, I had things or people who were functioning as idols and that fear often drove me right back into old habits of holding on to those idols. I was often serving both God and idols, refusing to let go. I learned that I was looking to idols for my identity or at times when God seemed silent or far away. And the study helped me see how false gods can be subtle and how they can slowly deceive me.

But the study ends in the hope of Christ and how we can experience true freedom from our idols and fears. We are chosen to bear fruit and live a life that glorifies Christ.

The daily homework was well-thought out and helped me think through how idols were impacting my life. I also really enjoyed each teaching session as Kelly walked through Old Testament stories and how they exemplified the problems with having false gods.

This has been one of my favorite Bible studies and one of the most impactful.

I really love Kelly Minter’s studies. This is the story that changed her life - passages that mean a great deal to her because of the way they changed her. This is an amazing but difficult study to do if you feel like you can’t find happiness in your life and things aren’t working for you.
